For the past ten years we have been using a Mitsubishi 60" RPTV in our basement family room that has a wall of windows that allow quite a bit of light during the day.

I am considering purchasing an RS1 in conjunction with an approximately 100" diagonal fixed screen (undertermined manufacturer and gain).

My RPTV's image can be washed out during the day, but, since most of my movie watching is at night I was never that concerned about it.

Here's my question: With equal room lighting conditions will the RS1 and a 100" diagonal screen provide as bright and sharp of an image as my 60" RPTV?

I'm trying to decide if I need to add a small LCD in parallel or if the projector will provide an image quality comparable to what we are accustomed to.

Also, I wonder how SDTV will compare?

Thanks in advance.

No, it won't be nearly as bright and it's probably not a good idea for a substitute in your setting.

I have a Pearl and a 106" Da-Lite high power screen, which has a very high gain, and it is essentially unwatchable if you have any daylight or lights on in the room. You may be able to get away with some low ambient lighting, but thats it.

Hopefully in the future manufacturers will figure out a way to have a projector set up that can be watched with some daylight or regular lighting in the room, but for now you need a near pitch-black room to watch most projectors.

In your case, any of the current flat panel display will be a good alternative to your RPTV. On the other hand, I find a projector a very convenient source of entertainment on top of a flat display.
