I have a Mitsubishi HC3000 and I've used AVIA to calibrate it but I'm also interested in using CALMAN to fine tune my projector. However the task seems daunting. What is the learning curve for using CALMAN? I already have Excel 2003 and I would purchase a Pantone Eye One Display LT to use with the CALMAN software.

What is the learning curve for using CALMAN?It's moderate. Once you get the hang of it, it's no big deal, but you may not get the hang of it right away.

They are in the process of developing a substantial upgrade that will be a stand-alone program instead of programmed Excel spreadsheets. This should be available some time fairly soon. I expect this version will be MUCH easier to use, and more powerful to boot.

once you figure how to use Calman, whether its Excel or a stand-alone program, your gonna love the Mits 3000U - its one of the most accurate PJ all around that you can calibrate. Let me know if you need any advice, as I have the same projector and I have calibrated this to the max (IMHO)..

Thanks, Tom. I guess my problem is figuring where to start once I've connected the hardware together and fired up the software. Do instructions come with the CalMAN software? I also noticed that GetGray is also recommended when using CalMAN.

Hehe... that's the problem... how to figure out how to use the CalMAN software. Did you have any previous experience with this kind of software and calibrating projectors other than using AVIA or other equivalent calibration discs?

1. Connect the hardware.
2. Start CalMan and enter the meter serial # and License #. This enables the hardware.
3. Go to the NTSC or HD tab, depending upon which standard you want to calibrate to.
4. Perform a gray scale reading.
5. Perform a color primaries/secondaries reading.

The UI for performing (3) and (4) is fairly straightforward. You must perform complete runs of each initially, but after that you can re-measure individual point after adjustments. You can take screen shots of the provided graphs if desired.

Ive never used Calman..but the good thing with Calman is that the support is really there for you, you might want to venture to their website for direct support. I can give you some inside on the MIts3000 itself

Ive had a MitsCRT professionally calibrated and Ive always known how to tweak sets to certain depth, obviously I am not a pro, but I do get the jist of it. With the Mits3000, its one of those sets that has no hidden menu, so everything you need is there, and when you do get it calibrated, its almost as perfect as any projector can get..Gamma, CIE point, color decoder are very accurate..You can get a greyscale linear from 10IRE and up...

UI = User Interface?

UI = User Interface?Yes. And in Step #2, I meant to write "path to the driver", not meter serial #.

Hi Rich,

I just saw your post of a couple years back regarding the calibrating of the Mits HC3000. I just bought a used 3000 (600 hrs.) to replace my Mits HD1000. I would like to try and calibrate it myself prior to hiring an ISF tech. However I know absolutely nothing about calibration other than the serveral hours of reading on this forum.

I was wondering if I may ask your advice and suggestions on what path to take as far as equipment, software, etc. to buy and use to do this with. I, like most folks, would like to keep the money down as much as possible, but I do want the best picture I can get so I am willing to spend what it takes, within reason of course.

Rick your comments, expertise, time, and advice are most greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and I hope you have a pleasant evening.

Hi golffnutt,

Since you have a HC3000, you may find ControlCAL and THIS (http://www.controlcal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43) Display Profile useful for calibration (you can download it for free).

Let me know if you have any questions :D

btw, your HC3000 came with the required serial cable, hopefully you still have it.

Do not (bought it used last week), but. Got to thinking, the 2 serial cables that originally came with the HC3000 are probably the same as the ones which came with my HD1000U when I bought it new. Checked the owners manual of both and wahlah, they appear to be the same and yes I keep everything when I buy something new as I did the HD1000U. Thank you for letting me know though. Have a great day.
