LOL! I think BlazeMaster is busting my chops because of this conversation we had a while ago. You proved your point! Good one! :D

Well why buy a BD if you never want to watch it? If you have a lot of movies that are still shrink wrapped, I'm sorry to say that you wasted your money. You buys movies because you like it and want to watch it.

Really, like any of us need you to tell us that we're wasting our money, as if we don't hear it enough already from people in our immediate family and circle of friends. We come here to share our love for movies, and you go and tell someone that they're "wasting their money?" If you don't understand, why are you even here on AVS to begin with? In a sense, aren't you wasting money too, by owning a HT system, when you can just go to your local cinema and watch it there?

Seriously though, I think Weeds is a great show, IMO. So much better than the other junk they show on TV. I don't regret buying any of those movies. I watch them over and over. I feel it was money well spent. In fact, I almost never go to the movies, I never go out to expensive restaurants, I don't go out and spend money on alcoholic beverages, and I really don't own any other expensive luxuries like a fancy car, etc. My HT stuff is really all I spend my money on and they really don't cost much. Out of the 25 BDs I have, only three of them cost around $22-23. The rest cost around $10-17. I almost always try to get my BDs when they're on sale.

So, yeah, you proved your point, BlazeMaster. I understand what you're getting at and I sincerely apologize for what I said before. Yeah, our families and friends comment to us about how we waste our money and it can be annoying. My mom spends money on fancy clothes and shoes and my dad spends money on books and beer. I don't spend money on those things. I buy movies. It's our hobby. Everyone has some hobby and our families and friends need to learn to realize that.

Yeah, everyone is saying the same thing. Seasons 1-2 were good. Season 3, while not the best, was still not so bad. I haven't started Seasons 4-5 yet. I figured I'd just buy them if I find them cheap. Are you planning on getting Season 4 on BD or is it really that bad that you're going to pass?

I watched it all on Showtime in HD, so I have no plans on buying it. I'm still deciding if I should watch the 5th season on demand, but quite frankly I think there are other TV series I'd rather watch first, like Dexter.

Yes, I was busting your chops. I'm watching season 3 right now, and just can't stand any of it. Just about every single character gets on my nerves, and none of it seems realistic enough at all. You should look into Amazon or eBay, you can actually catch some pretty good deals, especially if you're ok with buying slightly used ones.

I do agree that Season 3 wasn't as good as Seasons 1 and 2. But I thought it was good in its own way. I got them all cheap though, I got Seasons 1 and 2 for $15 each and Season Three for $17. I haven't watched Seasons 4 or 5 yet because I don't have Showtime. I was thinking about just buying it if I find it them on sale, but from the way people are putting down those two seasons, I'm feeling kind of hesitant. I guess it all depends on how I feel if/when I see it on sale.

Here's my last 2 BLUs:

http://images.netbag.hu/20091018/17392756780.JPG

The second movie is the "CAN'T HARDLY WAIT" with Hungarian BD cover. :)

This is my first romantic comedy on BLU.I love that movie ,i saw it many years ago on VHS.It was very cute.

I hope i'll buy much more comedy in the future.

I don't wanna buy only sci-fi and horror movies always.

I'm late to the party....

Can someone explain why people want to see pix of someone's shelf/shelves of movies??

I can see that anytime I go to Target or Wal Mart...so why is there a whole thread showing movies sitting on a shelf at someone's house??

I guess it's because people find it interesting to see how people organize their BDs, i.e. if they put them in any particular order. And I guess they also would like to see what shelf they use.

Same reason there are car shows. If you wanted to see a bunch of cars you could go to Target or Wal Mart and look in their parking lot. But if you are a car enthusiast you want to see what other car enthusiasts are doing with their car/car collection. I have looked through this thread a couple times and I have yet to see a single person who has displayed there collection like target or wal mart would.

Each collection and how it is displayed says something about the person who has built it, much like each person's post on this thread. From your post I can guess that your collection consists of movies like prom night, scary movie, meet the spartans, and a pirated copy of bruno. Now, I could be totally wrong and misjudging you, and that's why you should post a picture so we know what your true tastes are.

I like to see people's collections for a number or reasons. One of them, is that I sometimes have my memory jogged regarding a certain title that I meant to pick up, but never got around too.

Just to reiterate what others have said, you obviously don't get it. If that truly is the case, then this is not the thread for you. Please refrain from public postings in this thread asking why people enjoy posting their collections. If you have a question, feel free to PM one of the mods.

I was just thinking the same thing! $20K in Blu's on a small screen. Should have diverted about $4K of that and bought a 120" screen and new Panny projector.

lol. I meant on average NOW. I got my TV first (40 inch Sony ) about three or four years ago and then I sold off most of my dvds (they filled the book cases as well) I then used that money and loaded up on Blu's (and hd dvd's at the time). I bought them mostly from members here and during good sales. Now i average about 2 a week. some weeks are better then others. thanks for the compliments. I know the TV looks small for some reason but in my apt 40 inch does fine..... for now anyway

Aside from bills and other expenses, I'm lucky to buy 5+ a month. Considering the average cost of a BD at retail, these collections are mind boggling. Almost like you need a part time job just to buy BD's lol. So far I have around 15-20, but I've only been buying them for a few months. Hopefully I have a huge collection like these someday.

Yeah I used to be big time into buying DVDs back in the day and easily had over a thousand at my peak. Sine then I've gotten married, had kids, and slowed down my rate to the point now to where in the 3 and a half years since BD came out I'm just now at around 130. There's just too much going on in my life now to really get into collecting like I used to be.

truffleshuffle83

i look at it like the blu rays i purchase are identical to the master for audio and on most normal displays the perceptable difference at higher resolutions will be small. in my theater yes and ill most likely upgrade those, but i held of on buying dvds and im making up for it now.

disclaimer, i was a poor high school and college student during the dvd era so while i bought some it was nowhere near the blus ive been buying

I'm not. I only own 39 bd's, but they are all ones that I watch multiple times. Plus, if you ask me, I have a much nicer setup. Not trying to brag, just pointing out that it's not always about how much you own, but how much you enjoy what you have.

also the last blu ray purchase you made is one of the worst transfers this year, so apparently quality and quantity dont matter to you

What is the big difference with the steel book editions and regular blu rays is it just the case is a steel book or something. I have never seen one in person or even in any stores for that matter. Are they suppose to be some collector editions I see people having these not even opened at all is just for collecting purposes or what any information would be great thanks.

lol pretty much. I've had to sacrifice much since getting married and it's definitely been a learning experience. I think the biggest shock was when I came home with a gadget one time (can't remember what now) and my wife asked me if I needed that. I was taken aback, to be sure lol.

To be honest though that's not such a bad thing. She keeps my spending in check and it's allowed me to look at the bigger picture and realize that buying everything I wanted because I could wasn't the most prudent choice. She's not against my collecting movies and told me she doesn't care that I buy them, just be more selective, so I am. Gotta love her. :)

Actually I haven't updated that in a long time, so the last movie I bought was star trek, which is one of the best transfers ever. So there goes that theory of yours. and I am not trying to **** up a thread. I was simply stating that I am not jealous of his collection. I was not belittling his collection, but not everyone believe in quantity over quality. I bought gladiator because I am a huge fan of the movie, and wanted it in high def. Sure it may not be the same quality as braveheart, but I do believe it is better then the dvd version.

I'll be glad to post my collection, but I'm not gonna throw a bitch fit when someone doesn't like it. I don't care. I buy the movies I like, not the ones that are gonna make everyone else happy.

Very impressive collection. You have many good movies on HD-DVD & BD. :)

I love these custom HD-DVD covers.SERENITY;EQUILIBRIUM;T 2-3 looks awesome.. ;)

Thanks very much. Appreciate the comments. :)

PS...you may want to edit your reply to remove the photos so they don't show up twice. Plus, the mods don't like to see all that memory used up. ;)

Nice and many still shrink wrapped.

Thanks.

Some of my HD-DVDs & BLUs still original. But not everything because I have a trick. ;)

Sometimes I keep the shrink wrap (PRESTIGE,TOTAL RECALL) because It's much more safer for the discs. It's a new habit because I hate the dirty discs.

But a few weeks ago I've opened the T2 Steelbook.I bought It in March (this Year). So this beautiful HD is'nt original anymore.

Too bad. :)

PS.

And thx 4 the "editing" advice. ;)

What do You think ? :D

I bought some BLUs at home(in Hungary) so the BD cover is Hungarian. ;)

The Hungarian Distributor (FHE) made different "non-english" covers 4 these BLUs.

But It's original like Yours.

Trust me. ;)

I have watched about all of them, I put plastic bag on them because my home is very damp and the covers bubble up a bit, also like sleeping beauty it has very nice art work and I like to keep them clean:).

I do this as well, primarily for the same reason.
Most people look at us like we are nuts, but the way I see it, I have a lot of money put into this. A $.05 bag to help preserve/insure a better resale value in the future is not a foolish extravagance.

There's plastic bags that slide over a HD/BD case? Where can you get these?

Hello all,

New to the forums and not sure if this is in the right thread but I'm looking to get some new shelves. There's some at BB right now which I can't link as I'm a new member but if you go to there site and look at the weekly ad it's on page 18. I'm thinking about getting them I read the reviews and they seem ok.
I don't have a Ikea around here so I can't get the ones that alot of people have posted in this thread.

If you have the tools to do it, there's always the option of making your own. With very large pieces of wood, places like Home Depot will cut boards for you for free (up to a certain number of cuts, then there is a small charge per cut).

Didn't realize people had this many Blu-rays. Question....for those that own hundreds of Blu-ray titles, how many of them were watched more than once?

RY35AN

I just sold around 50, I have 10 or so left. I was feeling guilty/stupid buying them and only watching them once then putting them back on the shelf. I have kept my absolute favorites though. I will continue to buy in the future but only the "must haves" that I know I'll watch again and again. All others=Netflix.

I have well over 400 blu-rays/hd-dvds and probably watched 10 more than once and 100 are still sealed, I don't have time for this...

I'll watch one tonight though.
I can't remember the last time I watched a movie and did nor remove the shrinkwrap before putting the disc in my player.

Movie collecting is plain stupid IMHO but I need to get them to stop the hitch.

Cheers,
Gui.

MrHT
01-15-10, 07:29 PM
No, I wouldn't call it plain stupid. Surely, there are a handful of movies we all love and can watch them over and over and not get enough of it. I think that's what people should be buying, IMHO. If you own 100s of movies and only rewatched 1/10 of the collection, then that probably means that the other 9/10 were movies you probably don't like THAT much. That's what I think because I own a few BDs that I only watched once and regretted buying. They were movies I thought would be something I would like to own, but after a while, I realized that a rental would've sufficed.

My advice, based on experience.....buy movies *you* really enjoy. People tend to purchase movies like The Dark Knight, Transformers, etc because they're popular and not because it's something they'd want to rewatch over and over. I can't tell you how many unpopular movies I've rewatched again and again & how many popular ones I've only watched once...

Didn't realize people had this many Blu-rays. Question....for those that own hundreds of Blu-ray titles, how many of them were watched more than once?
In my case, while I have well over 400 DVDs, I'm still at less than 50 BDs since I just got into the format less than a year ago.

It will probably take me a lot longer to get to the same level with BD as I did with DVD. The main reason: Netflix. At least 300 of my DVD purchases were before I had an account, so I did a lot of blind buys on release week discounts and bought a lot of movies that I thought I would watch a bit more often than I eventually did. Out of 400ish DVDs, there are about 25 that I really regret buying, like Godsend, Signs and Flightplan. Because of that, I won't do any more blind buys. Then there are those movies that I like, but really don't plan to rewatch anytime soon, like The Sixth Sense. I could have rented that one and enjoyed it just as much. Do I regret buying it on DVD? No, but it's one I probably would not have if I could have just put it in my Netflix queue like I would now.

That being said, there are plenty of DVDs and BDs I have no regrets buying, even if I only watch them once. I often buy great classic movies because if guys like me don't do it, the studios might not release them at all - even for rental. TV show box sets are another area I try to support, hoping my purchase might just hit the threshold required to continue to release later seasons of some great shows. For example, I'm still holding out hope that my purchases of seasons 1-4 of NYPD Blue will at least prompt them to release through the Jimmy Smitz era (the beginning of season 6). CHiPs is another show I hope they'll consider continuing to release, especially as a tie-in with the movie they keep pushing back.

On the BD front, though, I'm more careful. New releases are still far too expensive to play around with. I've been able to get some fantastic deals on catalog releases (several Bond films for $6 each, Bullet for $8.99, 2001 for $6.99, etc.) making it worth it to buy. I've gotten a few newer releases (like Up and Wall-E) for $15 or less.

However, at $25 or more, a movie like Bolt is a rental. I won't pay more than $20 for anything other than a special box set.

RY35AN
01-16-10, 02:03 PM
I don't think it's stupid. Each person can spend their money whatever way they see fit. For ME it's stupid because I never watched a majority of the one's I bought more than once. I believe in that case it is pretty much a waste of money. Most of these titles are not collector's items and will only decrease in value anyway.

I do think if you own over let's say "50 titles" then it may have become an "addiction" of sorts. Now, it's true there are far worse things to get "addicted" to and worse ways to spend your money but...owning 400+ movies isn't exactly the "wisest" choice when it comes to spending your money IMHO.

NetworkTV
01-16-10, 02:42 PM
...owning 400+ movies isn't exactly the "wisest" choice when it comes to spending your money IMHO.
Let's see:

- I don't go to see movies in the theater.
- I don't go to sporting events.
- Netflix took the place of premium channel subscriptions.
- I don't have a car payment.
- I don't buy expensive clothes.
- I have bought at least half the movies for between $5 and $10 each. Probably another 15% were gifts, especially box sets.

A lot of people I know go to concerts, sporting events, bars and movies in the theater. They spend thousands a year on that stuff. Heck, some people spend more a month on gas than I do on movies (and I live only a few miles from work, so I spend little on that). I have afriend who spends a couple of grand every summer to go on a big fishing trip. Another friend loves to play pool and spent $8000 on a professional grade Brunswick pool table. Another guy commutes 35 miles into work (and 35 miles back home) every day just because he likes the town he lives in. He spends a few hundred on gas every week compared to my $15-20. I know someone who spends several thousand a year on "collectible" toys in hopes he can sell them at a profit later - I'm not sure if the gamble has paid off. Speaking of gambling, look how many people feed casinos their hard earned money.

There are plenty here who spend hundreds on gaming systems, then hundreds more on games to play on them.

Just about everyone spends money on something other people think is a waste. Some might say that buying name brand products is a waste. Others might say that building a home theater is a waste. The question is, was it worth it to YOU to have spent the money? Did you get what you wanted out of it? In my case, the answer is "yes". Despite a few clunkers in the mix, I'm proud of my collection and like the idea that I can just pull one off the shelf and watch it whenever I want.

In total, I've spend less than $6000 on movies by watching for sales and taking advantage of first week deals on new releases.

People spend a lot of money on things that provide nothing tangible for their money other than memories. The difference in my buying movies is, at the end of the day, I still have the movie I spent money on and I can watch it again whenever I choose at no additional cost.

RY35AN
01-16-10, 03:26 PM
Everyone is entitled to spend their money whatever way the see fit. There are many ways people rationalize their purchases. If it works for you and you genuinely enjoy it then great. It doesn't change my opinion though.

Check the specifics of your Home Owners Insurance, or Renters Insurance. May need to increase your policy if you feel you need more coverage. Wouldn't want to find out if anything happened, knock on wood, that your policy would max out and not nearly cover your investments. Also make sure you have the proper proof, such as photos, stored somewhere safe.

Hey Louisville S, I actually got it at IKEA, it's called the Billy. It's actually a bookshelf but a relative of my girlfriends has a nice DVD collection and he had a few of those "Billy" Bookshelves, real nice and clean looking.

I think that bookshelf can hold roughly 372 Blu-Ray's, depending of course how far you space apart your shelves. I am planning on getting another one, so I will not try and squeeze anymore more movies, I want to keep it as clean as possible. Plus it's not that expensive...

Wow, you're crazy for alphabetizing all of your movies!

I know this is old as ish, but my wife alphabetized all of our movies. She does it when she gets bored. We have around 500 SD DVD's and probably around 10 Blu-Rays at the moment.

What do you guys buy every Blu Ray when it releases?

Like you marcellusk...Did you just go into Bestbuy one day and buy everything there? lmao

I am definitely envious of his collection. I don't even have that many DVDs (I've got between 600-700)! He's got what looks to be over 1,000 Blu-rays. Amazing. Makes me want to step up my movie collecting game. :D

What I don't get is how you have that huge blu ray collection and yet a rather average home theater setup.

Why not take all that $$ you spend on blu rays, put it into an awesome home theater and then just rent (and buy the best blu rays).

The beauty of this country is, you can do what makes YOU happy. Who's to say he's not totally "Thrilled" by his set-up. I've seen a lot of peoples homes, most people have **** set ups....this is above average. Not elite...but definitely not "average"....but not as good as mine :p;)

I could upgrade my projector every year if I didn't collect movies like I do. I am pleased with my setup so why not collect films. Having an amazing setup and just renting seems silly to me. My movies are always available unlike Netfix. Opening up a new blu-ray movie gives me much more pleasure than upgrading equiptment but thats just me.

You know...
That's the opposite of my taste, I prefer spending more money on a better H/T setup at the expense of media (I only have approximately ~200 Blu-Rays, ~1,800 DVDs, ~50 LDs, 22 HD-DVDs and 14 VHS tapes left) in order to better enjoy what I do have.
However, I totally understand the opposite philosophy- collect as much as you can to enjoy on a satisfactory setup. There's nothing wrong with that.

Hmm..
I just got banned on blu-ray.com forum for simply stating that blu-ray is a total marketing screw-up and the term blu-ray and the blue cases are simply plain ugly and not fit to present movies because of the blu cases not being a neutral color.. and this was in a thread about black blu-ray boxes! WTF, are there Sony mods on there?

I mean I love HD video, I just don't like the product..
Anybody feel the same way?

That's why Criterion doesn't use them either, because they have TASTE, so they saw immediatly the uglyness of it.

Completely agree. The blue cases do help to distinguish the product from regular DVDs, but it's aesthetically very cheap looking. I hope to see more clear cases or black cases in the future. If you need to set it apart from DVD, put a blue sticker on it like Criteron. That's how it should be handled.

No not really, if they had clear boxes they would be playstation 3 games or 3d blu-rays :D or black boxes you would never find them in the stores that easy. So they are fine the way they are.

I see at least two Hanna Montana discs in there. I'm not sure you've achieved that... ;) :D

Three Evil Dead Blu-rays?!
The question isn't why would you want 3, it's why wouldn't you want 3...

You need one to open the portal to Hell and release the dead.

You need a second to hurl at your enemies.

You need the third to get you back home and close the portal to Hell.

Who doesn't know this stuff? ;)

I liked the movie and that cover was so nice (Awesome Job) I bought the movie just to use it. I downloaded the cover and then made the necessary adjustments to convert it to an HDDVD cover. (Hope that was okay) The HDDVD was much much cheaper than the Blu-ray. :)

What do you mean you don't like the product? You mean to say you don't like the packaging, which is a pretty trivial matter. You may not like it, and you may find a dozen people that agree with you, but so what, I can find a hundred people that like the packaging, what does that prove?

Frankly, it doesn't matter if it was black, blue, red, or pink.

Blu-ray is the only high definition physical media there is, the color of the cases is irrelevant.

Not to say I agree at all. The term Blu-ray, given that the technology uses a blue laser is perfectly fitting.

And since it uses a blue laser, and since they decided to call it Blu-ray, using blue cases is only a natural progression.

how is it people still think blurays are expensive?

this year so far... i have bought 12 movies and spent an average of $6.99 per movie

now a few of these were 2 packs (Kelly's Heroes/Where Eagle Dare for $13.49, Crank/Crank 2 for $9.99, and Ernest Goes to Camp/Jail for $7.99) these days i don't often spend more than $10 for a movie on bluray and rarely will i spend more than $15 instead i set the bluray.com price tracker and wait

There are many sites that have the covers. You can even find some covers here at AVS. Look at the Custom Cover thread.

Most of the cover sites are pay sites. Not to bad though, generally $6 - $10 gets you 6 months to a year of access.

Try Customaniacs or DVD fusion to start.

:) Yes you download and print...and use your own case (you can also find replacement cases fairly easily on the web...)

They're all supposed to be 300dpi so you should have a pretty decent result once printed.
