View Full Version : What crummy movie did you buy b/c HD?
briansxx 04-08-07, 11:38 AM Just about everyone with a high definition source (HD DVD or BD) is disappointed with the lack of good software. So my question is this: What truly crummy movie did you buy that you would never have otherwise considered out of desperation to get HD material?
Mine was Tomb Raider (and I'm sure there'll be others!)
(I'll post this is the HD DVD forum, too)

patrick99 04-08-07, 11:43 AM Too many to list.
narcopolo 04-08-07, 11:45 AM I bought Phantom of the Opera just to hear TrueHD. I had overlooked that Training Day (was that the title?) also had TrueHD. I finally sold it on ebay for a loss.
Never did buy Training Day either.
osiris13 04-08-07, 11:59 AM None. The only Blu-Ray disks I own are Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down, and The Fifth Element.
Until they start to come down in price, I won't be buying anything but movies that I really, really like. Otherwise, Netflix for me.
McDermotX 04-08-07, 12:02 PM Only one..................Crank..
Awful, awful film.........one of the worst films I've ever seen..
And, to be honest, I think the PQ is vastly overrated and inconsistent, especially compared to subsequent releases..
No redeeming features at all..
cdhender 04-08-07, 12:38 PM Just Crank. I found parts of it funny but in general it's an awful movie (esp. the ending).
thewretched22 04-08-07, 12:55 PM On BD, probably Transporter 2.
Ih8dumppl 04-08-07, 01:12 PM Into the Blue is probably my worst that I own.
SCLlama 04-08-07, 01:43 PM Crank is the only one out of my 20+. Still pretty to look at though.
beatboy77 04-08-07, 01:44 PM Hulk
The Good Shepherd
The Marine

WaldorfSalad 04-08-07, 01:46 PM Crank.
HPforMe 04-08-07, 03:37 PM The Tailor of Panama.
The Tailor of Panama.
Just watched this last night. While I'd bet LeCarre's novel is meant to be taken seriously based on his many other excellent spy stories, the movie couldn't decide if it was serious, satire, or comedy. While I wouldn't call it bad, it wasn't worth spending $20-25 on.
ss9001
MSmith83 04-08-07, 03:47 PM When I blind bought it during the Fox sale, I thought Transporter 2. But I actually really like this movie. The fight scenes and action is very entertaining, and the soundtrack itself is something I like to go back to every now and then.
Every other movie I bought was because I really like it, so I can't answer this question.
eddy_winds 04-08-07, 03:50 PM I rent only atm
:)
PULSAR3002 04-08-07, 03:59 PM None, I like all the ones I purchased.
schroedk 04-08-07, 04:04 PM I'll throw in another vote for Crank. I'm usually a fan of the genre, but that was just a plain awful movie.
Kevin12586 04-08-07, 04:50 PM :D When I saw the title, I figured a few of you would say Crank.
I haven't watched any of my movies yet; I am waiting for my dual subs to be delivered so I can experience the full potential of these soundtracks.
So far I only own Casino Royale, Chicken Little, Blackhawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven and Happy Feet. I am now considering buying The Departed.
eightninesuited 04-08-07, 05:02 PM Into the Blue
flyersfan 04-08-07, 06:01 PM I made far too many mistakes buying DVDs that I'll never watch again. Happily, I've kept my HD purchases to a minimum and don't have any discs that I know I won't watch more than once/twice.
Skinship 04-08-07, 06:10 PM None
I don't want to repeat the same mistakes I made with Dvds. I bought all kinds of **** just to increase my collection and because i liked the quality. Few Years later i had to sell all these because they simply weren't good films (and in the end thats all that matters). Lost a lot of money with that.
Now with the new formats i only buy the good stuff, even though it does get tempting to just buy anything just to see some new High Definition stuff, cause my taste is a bit off and there aren't too many releases of films I like.
But no...gotta stay strong ;)
youknowryan 04-08-07, 06:13 PM None.
I'm using netflix to watch any movie i'm unsure about first. this has saved me from blind or desperation buying.
I have 11 HD DVDs (after about 2 weeks of ownership) and all are good movies.
When I get my BR player, the same rule will apply.
Hulk
The Good Shepherd
The Marine

Hulk was a good movie. Not Spider-Man 2 caliber,Other than the storyline with his father, it was good.

briansxx 04-08-07, 07:03 PM My kids just ordered Eragon from Amazon. I guess that doesn't really fit with the spirit of this thread, but watching it in the theater with my son was pure torture; now I'll have to put up with at least 100 repetitions in glorious 1080p before the novelty wears off...
Brian
None. I already played that game with DVD and don't plan to do it again.
But....a good deal is sometimes hard to pass up. :D
narcopolo 04-08-07, 07:25 PM Happily, I've kept my HD purchases to a minimum and don't have any discs that I know I won't watch more than once/twice.
Same here. Only own 30 high def disks. 28 are HD DVD. Have had a player for quite some time.
kimchimonkey 04-08-07, 07:39 PM co-sign on not making the mistake I did w/dvds.
I generally apply a rule where I don't buy anything I haven't watched before. It's tempting to buy something blind, because you can save some money from renting it or watching it before, but its a waste of money if you never watch the movie again.
swpsacs1 04-08-07, 07:42 PM I too went down that road with DVD. I've so far resisted the temptation, with a little bit of weakness during Amazon's 50% off sale. Fortunately, I bought ones I wanted to get but was put off by Fox sticker shock.
osiris13 04-08-07, 08:54 PM memento
Bad movie?
GamerGuyX 04-08-07, 10:01 PM Bad movie?
Don't listen to him. He probably didn't like it because he "didn't get it".
the47ronin 04-08-07, 10:21 PM Resident Evil (I know but it was on sale!)
Happy Feet (Too much singing)
yakkosmurf 04-08-07, 10:53 PM The Lake House. Actually, my wife bought it, not me. She wanted something she would want to watch in HD. :D It wasn't as bad as I thought it would, but it wasn't great either. I refuse to buy crap movies on DVD, much less HD.
OniKoroshi 04-09-07, 12:07 AM Resident Evil Apocalypse (the original was very good) and Into the Blue. Great eye candy and ear candy though.
flyersfan 04-09-07, 01:09 AM DOHC,
I'd be happy to buy Memento off you since you regret the purchase.
Another vote for Crank. :)
KyaDawn 04-09-07, 02:08 AM Did this with DVDs and then with D-VHS. Guess I'll never learn. Bought quite a few HD disc already purely for PQ. While I wouldn't say all the films below are "crummy", they certainly are not the type of films I would buy usually, and if they were just on DVD, there's no way I would get them.
1. Chicken Little
2. The Wild
3. Happy Feet
4. Transporter 2
5. World Trade Center
6. Serenity
7. Poseiden
8. Hollywoodland (though I ended up liking it quite a bit)
There are two films I'm tempted to get each time I'm at the store against my best instincts, basically because I know they have great PQ. They are "Crank" and "Aeon Flux", two movies that I'm sure are piece of sh*t. I'm proud that I haven't succumbed yet, but if there's nothing else to get the next time I'm at the store, who knows what could happen?
ResOGlas 04-09-07, 02:10 AM The Good Shepherd
Manchurian Candidate
luigionlsd 04-09-07, 02:50 AM I got Talladega Nights with my PS3... does that count? Pretty bad movie, especially the PS3 pack-in.
RioRebel 04-09-07, 10:01 AM I haven't bought a stinker yet (though I've come close to pulling the trigger on Corpse Bride several times, just because of the reported quality.)
I did, however, buy one that I immediately regretted: Pursuit of Happyness. I really like Will Smith and I liked the movie, but I don't see myself watching it over and over, and the fact that it is high def didn't add much for me.
I learned my lesson. From now on, at least as long as prices are this high, I'm limiting my Blu-ray purchases to something I expect to watch multiple times and something with "wow" scenes that take advantage of the higher quality.
On the flip side, I bought Kingdom of Heaven even though I bought the DVD and it was already high quality. I don't regret it at all, because I can watch that movie over and over, and some of the scenes really grab you in high def.
RioRebel 04-09-07, 10:03 AM And by the way, I too bought Into the Blue. But Jessica Alba in a bikini with a high def picture...that needs no further justification.
SetterP 04-09-07, 12:29 PM By far my worst BD purchases were:
Knight's Tale
Benchwarmers
Both were BOGO during the Fry's sale, but still not even worth the $10 I paid.
CorruptedDragon 04-09-07, 12:42 PM i wont do that again with HD. I did it FAR too many times with dvd. My dvd collection was up to like 2500 at one point, and alot were movies i bought just because of reviews of how good it was supposed to look. Now, i only replace movies on HD with movies i know i like and will watch, although i do buy new releases as well, but i wont buy a movie anymore just because " dude the movie is ass, but the picture is incredible!"
chefboy1 04-09-07, 01:18 PM Happy Feet. Bought into the hype and pretty picture. Even my daughter got bored half way through.
AnthonyP 04-09-07, 02:04 PM have not seen it yet, but Into the blue was bought for the eye candy
briansxx 04-09-07, 02:35 PM There are two films I'm tempted to get each time I'm at the store against my best instincts, basically because I know they have great PQ. I'm proud that I haven't succumbed yet, but if there's nothing else to get the next time I'm at the store, who knows what could happen?
My "guilty pleasure" is that I actually quite enjoyed Aeon Flux! The PQ is amazing, BTW!
Broccoli 04-09-07, 04:18 PM Corpses Bride for me
maverick0716 04-09-07, 04:31 PM I actually really liked Crank. What were you guys expecting from that film anyway?
maingon 04-09-07, 04:48 PM Into the Blue was a pretty good movie and with Jessica Alba its pretty amazing looking
Benchwarmers, I seen that in the theaters only and was the worst movie I have seen a while.
AnthonyP 04-09-07, 08:29 PM I actually really liked Crank. What were you guys expecting from that film anyway?
finally saw it this weekend, liked it as well.
Into the Blue was a pretty good movie and with Jessica Alba its pretty amazing looking
like I said, I have not seen it yet, so I don't know if it is any good. I also did not read any reviews or anything. So it could very well be a good movie. But the reason I bought it was because of Jessica in a bikini in HD, so the only reason I bought it was for HD. If it is good all the better.
Icemage 04-09-07, 08:58 PM I'm pretty picky about what I buy, but I'll admit I've bought a few just for PQ/AQ/showoff purposes alone... but I've walked into all of them with eyes wide open. :)
Open Season comes to mind. I detest the story, I hate the music, but the PQ is divine, and it's one of my favorite show-off discs.
The Corpse Bride is another flaky storyline that has great PQ. I expected better from Tim Burton, and while I adore Danny Elfman cinematic scores, his first (and hopefully only!) foray into actual singing in a movie left me cold.
My only real concession to horrible popcorn munching so far has been Fantastic 4. I hadn't seen the movie, so this was a blind buy during the Amazon 50% sale, but hey, Jessica Alba nearly naked is a plus, and I've a soft spot for Michael Chiklis from being a fan of The Commish years ago.
gorthocar 04-09-07, 11:31 PM Underworld Evolution -- not quite my style
The Big Hit -- incredibly stupid story
But I got them for, effectively, 1/2 off at the Fry's special earlier this year.
Neo1965 04-10-07, 12:11 AM Serenity, Hulk, Constantine, LXG, Eragon, Crank. Incredible demo materials, but no redeeming quality beyond the eye candy.
I wanted to say Doom and Nacho Libre, but the eye candy wasn't there and so it doesn't apply to these.
Aztec_MC 04-10-07, 12:23 AM BABEL is the worst movie of all time... it isn't even a movie, b/c there's no plot, and not even commentary to explain this nonsense. The PQ made me throw up. I can't believe the director isn't in jail for warcrimes, this movie is garbage... Crank was kinda fun, because it was more of a video game experience, but I can't stand that awful British accent.
Crank\ Babel\ The Departed - All my previous BD's I bought because I knew I'd like them, and I did. I bought these three movies specifically for PQ. Never again.
flyersfan 04-10-07, 09:41 AM The Corpse Bride is another flaky storyline that has great PQ. I expected better from Tim Burton, and while I adore Danny Elfman cinematic scores, his first (and hopefully only!) foray into actual singing in a movie left me cold.
Danny was also the singing voice of Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas. I thought he meshed quite well with Chris Sarandon as the speaking voice. But I agree, Corpse Bride was rather uneven.
Icemage 04-10-07, 09:51 AM Danny was also the singing voice of Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Was he really? Good grief. Why can I not understand half of his lyrics in the cantina scene of Corpse Bride, when I can understand everything in The Nightmare Before Christmas? Maybe it's that weird accent he puts on as Mr. Skellybones...
JaylisJayP 04-10-07, 10:16 AM Only one..................Crank..
Awful, awful film.........one of the worst films I've ever seen..
And, to be honest, I think the PQ is vastly overrated and inconsistent, especially compared to subsequent releases..

This film was so much fun...I can think of at least 2 dozen worse movies that are out on Blu-Ray. Horrible choice.
JaylisJayP 04-10-07, 10:16 AM Don't listen to him. He probably didn't like it because he "didn't get it".
There's a lot of people like that out there.
Jim Morrison 04-10-07, 11:27 AM I guess i'm in the minority here because i love Corpse Bride - both film and Blu-Ray disc. Admittedly, it's not in the same league as 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' but 'stinker' is a tad harsh imo! Still, one man's meat is another man's poison...etc etc.
McDermotX 04-10-07, 11:41 AM This film was so much fun...I can think of at least 2 dozen worse movies that are out on Blu-Ray. Horrible choice.
Well,
everyones taste is different, there are films out there that people love and just as many who hate..
But, Crank was an almost embarrassing film in my view (still can't believe I sat through it) and while there probably are worse films out on Blu-ray, it was the worst disc bought for reasons the OP stated..
Frankly I only got around to watching it a week or so ago, so I was expecting a demo disc of sorts from reviews a while back.....................boy was I wrong  , not because of its relatively decent (albeit overrated) PQ, but because I'll never stick it in the player again..
Underworld Evolution was another poor film in my opinion (not quite as bad, but pretty rubbish) but it wasn't bought for PQ/AQ reasons (it was a gift)
None. The only Blu-Ray disks I own are Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down, and The Fifth Element.
Until they start to come down in price, I won't be buying anything but movies that I really, really like. Otherwise, Netflix for me.
Same here, I've only purchased 4 (Kingdom of Heaven, Blazing Saddles, Reservoir Dogs and The Great Raid), and when I look at them I regret a couple. Even on sale, there aren't really that many titles that I'd want to buy right now, I'm happy renting from Netflix.

Memento? That is one of my favorite movies of all time! I would never pool it anywhere near the same category of a Crank. Just not your cup of tea eh?

I might get flamed for this, but I bought X-men 3 because it was on sale, and I wanted to own all of them. I'm not a huge fan of this one, but it's ok to watch when I want to bookend my other X-men movies.
the47ronin 04-10-07, 09:04 PM I guess i'm in the minority here because i love Corpse Bride - both film and Blu-Ray disc. Admittedly, it's not in the same league as 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' but 'stinker' is a tad harsh imo! Still, one man's meat is another man's poison...etc etc.
I also loved Corpse Bride, great movie.

nayagamj 04-10-07, 09:19 PM 50 first dates. to be fair, it wasn't a bad movie. it was pretty funny and had its moments but i can't imagine watching it again. i did get it for 10 bucks though with the frys buy one get one free sale, so i'm not loosing any sleep.
Open Season - bought it because of the reference PQ and it being animation, but haven't had the interest to watch it since I purchased it the day it was released...and it's still unopened in factory shrink!
Ice Age 2 - bought it because of the great PQ and it being animation, but have only watched the 1st quarter of the film...and haven't been able to conjure up enough interest to watch the rest.
