Any chance Disney is going to be flexible with the "Vault" when it comes to Blu Ray?

I think a fresh transfer to hi def of stuff like Fantasia would be kind of fun.

Don't know about that, but the first Major animated release from them is going to be Cars this summer..

Cars is a great start!

Would not mind Peter Pan, and all the oldies. Not sure if Blue Can increase the quality of an old pic like that, but might be worth a shot. I would drop major $$ on vault stuff.

Not too excited about Cars... probably going to pass... Now if it were The Incredibles, Finding Nemo or Monsters, Inc... it would be no brainer.

Yes, Monster Inc. in HD...that will probably look fantastic!

Ditto. Snow White, Fantasia etc etc. Cars isn't my cup of tea, but most of the other, more recent titles are. I thought The Incredibles was brilliant.

There's a clip of it on the ABC Network's HD loop that you can see if your local affiliate forgets to go back to local after a network HD show. That's happened many times here on channel 6.. I even have a D-VHS tape of the loop. The clip looks terrific in 720P.

Same here. I'm hoping they'll get this out by the end of 2007. One of my favourite movies.

I believe the Jungle book will be the next platinum release, hopefully they'll do a BD version of that, I'd prefer that to peter pan (which I've never seen despite owning the DVD)

I'm going to try not to replicate the disney movies I own, but I know I will get weak at the knees and rebuy them on BD. :)

I have almost ALL of the disney/pixar stuff on dvd. I buy for my children. Yeah, right. I love watching the movies.

I think that if Pixar/Disney started launching releases on Blu-Ray, the format would get an immediate boost. I would probably replace at least 50% of my content. I would definitely repurchase Toy Story I/II, The Incredibles, Nemo, Cars, Madgascar (not sure if its Disney/Pixar, but looks great), Monsters Inc., Jungle Book I, II, Lion King, etc....

And I imagine that seeing the Incredibles in high def at a Best Buy or circuit city would generate much more interest in the format. There are a lot of parents out there who are still kids at heart.

Then I would repurchase Dreamwork's Madgascar too. It's a fun film and looks great on dvd. Imagine in high def....

Cars is a piece of crap and if any other studio but Pixar made it, it would have faded from theaters immediately.

Then again, some people seem to honestly enjoy the film.

That being said, I'll buy it for the PQ.

I just can't wait for Wall-E. It looks so amazing!

Doc Hollywood, animated. A merely ho-hum movie which, I agree, should look great in Hi Def.

Disney has been preparing for this since at least 2003. Originally they were releasing their Platinum Edition line of DVDs (the top 10-12 Disney animated films) at a rate of one per year. In 2003 Disney changed that schedule to release 2 per year so they could get through them all before the next generation of discs hit and force us to buy them all over again on a new format!

If Cars had been released by any other studio it would have been hailed as their best film to date! Only compared to Pixar's other films does Cars pale. Up against the crap every other studio puts out it is gold.

Cars is the weakest Pixar movie to date but it was still the best animation title in 2006. I don't know how it lost to Happy Feet at the Oscars. As far as I am concern, it wasn't even close. In the year where Inconvenient Truth won as best documentary and global warming is the "in" thing in Hollywood, I guess its not surprising why Happy Feet won.

Even though Cars is my least favorite Pixar title, I will still buy it because it will most likely be a reference title. Anyone can guess which scene will have the highest bit rate ...the waterfall scene?

Them's fightin' words! :p

But seriously, it's all good if, as the OP suggests, Disney opens up the vaults. Everyone can choose their favorites.

I would buy Cars and the Incredibles in a heartbeat. Monsters, Inc... Meh. If it was on sale, I might grab it.

It's an interesting question regarding the Vault.

I don't know what Disney's rules about the Vault are regarding new media, though seeing how we just got a new version of Peter Pan on DVD, I think that title falls to the bottom of the very list for Blu-ray.

Stuff I'm most interested in for high definition from the Vault: The Lion King, Aladdin, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Fantasia. Peter Pan would be on the list, but the realist in me knows we won't see a new double dip on that title for a while.

Don't forget Beauty and the Beast! Disney's best film (IMO) and the only animated film to get nominated for Best Picture.

I'm extremely interested in the Cars release. I thoroughly enjoyed that movie, but it was not as good as Monsters, Toy Story 1 & 2, or Incredibles.

The DVD was considered to have great PQ, but I noticed some jaggies on the window pillars even with my Gennum upscalar. I'm dying to see if they are there on Blu-Ray. As Mike Wazowski would say: "Wouldn't it be better if it all just . . . blew away?"

Disney made John Lasseter (Cars) and Jerry Bruckheimer (PotC) say these nice things about BD on HMM :

Verified as per the Disney release of Peter Pan on 3/6/07. This information is listed in the Sneak Peek section of the DVD. Those titles are specifically mentioned. When it first came out, this information wasn't on the Disney Blu-Ray site. Not sure if it's listed now on the website, but it is mentioned in the DVD.

There is no time-frame provided in the DVD and we'll just have to watch the website for release. I'm anxiously awaiting them, but my SDVD's upconvert well on PS3 and HD-A1 via a Pioneer 5070. :)
