View Full Version : LG would not reord Soprano's
BigOc90 04-09-07, 01:49 AM First off, I am new here so please over look any mistakes I might make.
I bought the LG 787T recorder about 2 weeks ago. So far so good. No heating problems....yet !
Now to the problem, the wife and I were watching a movie and did not want to stop so I wanted to record the Sopranos tonight to watch later. I set the LG to come on and record the show. At 9:00pm it came on and said the show was copy righted and could not record it and turned it self off
I have an old Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD recorder that has never had a problem with recording anything, as a matter of fact....I went to my bedroom and turned on the old E55 and recorded the show !
My question is: is there a way around the copy right so that the LG will record the show? Or is this the new software in all the new recorders that will prevent them from recording certain programs. I thought maybe I could hook it up a different way or something.
I have the LG hooked to my Samsung 32" HD LCD tv with a HDMI cable. I also ran separate cable hook up's to the recorder and the tv. I have no cable box, just strait cable tv.
Thanks for anyones help !

Firstly I don't understand how you would be able to get HBO (to watch the Soprano's) without a Cable Box. So you just have a cable ready TV with the cable connected to it, and the Soprano's comes in?
OK, the only thing I can think of that would work is a Copyguard Eliminator, but unfortunately they don't come with a Coaxial Cable connection, only RCA (Yellow video cable) or S-Video, so there is something unique that you would have to do.
Get a VCR and connect it to your TV so the VCR stays on Channel 3 and records from whatever show you are viewing, then run the RCA (Yellow, Red, & White) cables OUT of your VCR to one of the LG's INPUTS where the Audio Cables (Red & White) go directly from VCR to LG Recorder, and the Video Cable (Yellow) goes through a Copyguard Eliminator (I'll show you which one to get in a moment).
Now, you are removing the signal that tells the LG not to record and it should be just fine. So just set the LG to record off of whatever Line Input the VCR is connected to (L1, L2, etc...) and leave the VCR on (don't even need a tape in it) and it should work for you.
The Eliminator I will recommend to you also has an S-Video pass through in addition to the RCA/Composite pass through, so use S-Video if your VCR and LG both have it, otherwise use the other connection. The device is called the Grex, here is a link to the web site that sells it...

Up until recently, HBO was part of my system's analog package. It just came in (on channel 20). I suppose that they should have filtered it out on the street, but it came in, as long as you didn't have a cable box.
Subsequently, they moved HBO off of analog and exclusively on the Digital Tier. So now, I don't have HBO anymore.
Maybe the original poster has the same experience on his cable system.

rgazzara 04-09-07, 07:49 AM The OP didn't say he was receiving HBO without a cable STB, only that the Sopranos wouldn't record due to a "copy never" flag. This is occurring more frequently as cable providers are adding this flag to certain programming. The newer recorders are more sensitive to the flag than the older recorders like the E-55.
The OP has 2 choices, continue to record the Sopranos on the E-55, or get a system that removes the flag. There are several products described in this forum that will do the trick.

Actually, he did say that he wasn't using a STB.

rgazzara 04-09-07, 11:43 AM You're correct, sorry.
Perhaps he is on one of the few remaining cable systems that doesn't require a STB for HBO.

I realize that this example is cable... but can anyone comment as to whether OTA is affected? Has anyone had their DVDR/DVR refuse to record a show because some flag was set?
I thought the courts threw out this FCC broadcast flag crap (for now...)
Earthquake Mike 04-09-07, 01:36 PM Sopranos now showing on A & E network....no STB required. (at least on my cable)

It sounds like he has his cable feed (coax) run through a splitter. Then he feeds one coax to the TV and the other coax to the LG recorder. The LG is connected to the TV via HDMI.

BigOc90 04-09-07, 03:54 PM First of all...Thanks for the help !
I live in the boonies of Virginia, and the cable system that we have has no digital channels...yet. We are supposed to upgrade to a newer system in the next year or so.
Right now I get HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and stars, and Encore without a box. I have to pay extra to get these of course. They use a filter out on the pole where the cable comes down to filter out the channels that you don't pay for. Shows you how far behind we are here ! I get 77 analog channels right now.
Is the reason that I can record the show with the pan E55 because it is older and doesn't have the software that prevents the copyright ?
Again thanks so much for the help !

I don't have a cable box were I live ( boonies of Virginia ). I only get analog channels as of right now.
What I did was to take the cable as it comes into the house and run it through a 2 way splitter and run one line to the back of the LG to the cable in connect.
I then run another cable to the cable in connection on my TV. I did that so while I am recording a show on the LG, I can watch other channels on my TV. I know that the LG has a DVD/TV button, but this is much easier. I can just change channels on my TV with out having to change imputs.
Thanks

BigOc90 04-09-07, 04:06 PM Thanks, but that is the old reruns. The new episodes started last night. The new ones you can only see on HBO.

BigOc90 04-09-07, 04:09 PM I agree, I thought the same thing !
Last night was the first time that I have had that problem. Thats why I was wondering if something has changed or maybe I have a problem with the recorder, or the way I hooked it up. I have had a dvd recorder for about 3 years now and that was the first time that I had a problem like that.

BigOc90 04-09-07, 04:12 PM Yea, I am on an old system. Its owned by a guy that lives here. He has recently sold the system out to Bristol Virginia utilities and they are supposed to upgrade the system over the next couple of years....I HOPE !!

Welcome to our humble forums. Let me start by saying I know less about this stuff than many other people here. I just wondered if bringing the HDMI connection into the mix might have set off the Copy Never Flag. Did you have/use HDMI with the older E55 unit? Just for fun I wonder what would happen if you connected to the TV thru the LG's analog video out. Just a thought, and probably not the solution but no harm in trying.

Thanks for the welcome first of all, seems like a nice bunch of people and very helpful !!
Thats a good thought and worth trying ! I haven't thought about that yet, and no...I didn't use a HDMI with the E55. It doesn't have a HDMI connection. I will give it a try as soon as I get a chance and will let you know what happens.
We are painting the inside of the house right now so it might be a day or so before I can get back to ya.
Thanks man,

Yes, I believe that it is not legal for this flag to be set for OTA broadcasts.

Wow, you're lucky. I thought I was among the last areas in the country to be able to get premium channels without a box.. guess not. Heck, I don't even remember how long ago it was, maybe 2000? I'd probably still be paying for HBO if I could get it without a box..
(Well, now I have a Tivo series 3, and could get it with cablecards.. but I also have netflix..)
Sean Nelson 04-09-07, 10:51 PM Yes, I believe that it is not legal for this flag to be set for OTA broadcasts....although that's irrelevant to the OP's question, since he's not receiving this via OTA.

Correction --- I was lucky. They recently put HBO on a digital tier only. Channel 20 is now static. It took me 3 weeks to delete channel 20 from the TV's memory. I was holding out as if it was a bad dream. I really only watched HBO for the Sopranos and Entourage. I can wait for the DVD's to show up at Blockbuster.

I would say yes, the E-55 and older DVD recorders are less sensitive to the CGMS copy protection mechanism than are the newer recorders. For a link to a description of CGMS click here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CGMS-A)

Thanks man, thats what I been looking for. It looks like no matter how I hook this recorder up, its not going to record the new episodes of the Sopranos ( at least with the LG that is...lol ) The old stand by...the panny E55 will still do the job ! I started to sell the panny, but now I'm glad I decided to keep it. I can use it to record the things that the LG will not......at least until my cable goes digital that is !
By the way, has anybody heard anything about weather they are going to do another season of Deadwood on HBO ? I love that show !
Again thanks !

Well...that figures. I had heard that they were going to do a movie to tie all the loose ends up but have not heard anymore about it.

BigOc90 04-11-07, 02:05 AM I don't know much about the sony so I am going to ask you a couple of questions...if you don't care.
Does the Sony have a digital tuner ? How do you have yours hooked up to your Tv. Did you use a HDMI cable or other ? And how is your cable hooked to your Sony, do you have it run through a cable box first. I know that might sound stupid, but I don't have a cable box with my cable, and I wonder if that might make a difference.
Thanks
