I was at friends house, he has a 10yr old rear projection TV>denon 1000 dvd/cd play. I noticed he had an Svideo feed and suggest he use the component connection. It might yield a better PQ. He only had a composite (y-red-white) cable. So we connected it. We got a picture but we had –no color-. I couldn’t figure out why- can you use a composite cable to connect to a component feed?
#2?- his DVD would not display my AVIA DVD- it just would stay in “load” display, and just sit there…any thoughts?
Thanks
db

As I look back over the many years of my life, I have discovered that I may have lost a decade or two, but can’t remember which ones.

#1 - perhaps the cables you used were defective. Have you tried any others?

Component cables are nothing special. Any cables intended for video signals should work just fine for component cables.

Have you tried checking the player's settings? Perhaps something in the hardware setup needs to be tweaked to use component outputs.

#2 - Could be any number of things - is this all Region 1 stuff or region-free? Could be the disk is slighly scratched and the player is very sensitive to scratches, etc.

Thanks, No we only had that cable- next time i go over i'll bring the component.
Yes- dvd player could have a setting issue, hen't could remmber how to get into it.
But other dvd's worked. We were short of time, so didn't spend alot of time on it..
#2, no my avia is in good order- just used in my system two day earlier( I have re cal- several times), the two netflix dvd's were in worse condition and worked fine... - all gear is for USA use-- CA.

Does the TV have component inputs?

Does the TV have component inputs?

Ya know, I thought about asking that... but I assumed one would not try to hook up component connections that didn't exist. I hope I'm not wrong in that assumption. :o

Yes, it does. That is why i suggested use component vs. SVideo.

I'd assume that as well, but when someone refers to coax cable, as "composite" cable, who knows what they mean.
Anyway, if the image only displays in B&W, it means that both colour difference cables are bad, which is unlikely, or the component signal was plugged into a composite input, which would display the "y" channel, as a B&W image.

Maybe your right. The dvd player had -rbg- component input . now thinking back, the TV had ext-1 and 2. when i looked at the (input on the back of the TV I asumded it was a component rbg input( faded and a little dark back there. Thanks for clearing this up.

Maybe your right.

Why don't you post the model of the TV so we can check ?

The dvd player had -rbg- component input .

Why would a DVD player have an RGB input, when most, if not all, DVD players have component outputs only?

T- I’ll have to ask my friend - lives an hour away, it is a Mitsubishi I think, but It’s 10 + yr.s Old. He is going to replace it in the next month or so for Plasma…
rbg- component input - should have said outputs

"rbg" is not the same as component....they just coloured the connectors that way, to confuse you.

It’s 10 + yr.s Old. I think that component on consumer gear appeared arount 1998 or 1999. So it wouldn't be component if it's 10+ years old.

Also the 1st year HD Mitsubishi's (1998) only had RGBHV via BNC. No YPrPb via RCA.
