View Full Version : layout - center channel placement?

Hi all,

First off, I'm a novice here, so please go easy on me. From what I've read on other sites and some posts on here, it sounds like in my home theater set up, I should place the center channel speaker at mid screen and preferably at the same height as the L and R front speakers.

I'm getting ready to finish my basement and am looking at the theater room area. I'm leaning toward the panny TH58PX60U. That said, if the L and R are supposed to be at ear height when seated, then what's a guy to do about the center channel? With that screen size, I've either got to put the center way above or way below ear height. Sounds like if I offset them too much I'll have some audio issues. I'm looking at doing a 7.1 setup since I will have full wall enclosure (I can easily place the L and R sides and L and R rears at the same height). My room dims are 19' long, 14' wide, by 9' high.

Any suggestions?

I'm looking at in-wall speakers, so I've either got to be above or below the screen. Is it better to match all three in height, or to keep the L and R at ear height and offset the center channel.

My bro-in-law is letting me buy some of the gear through him. He's suggested Russound SP-A6W's. I can get them pretty cheap at just over $100 per pair, but are these decent or even appropriate for my needs? He claims they are pretty good speakers for the price.

Any other speaker suggestions keeping in mind that I would like to keep my speaker costs under $1,000? Thanks for any replies you send.

The center channel doesn't have to be EXACTLY the same height as the L and R. You got a bit of a fudge factor (I've heard to keep it within 12"-24", but I wouldn't go over that) and it will still work well.

Also, you can angle the speakers towards your listening position if they have to be placed awkwardly, although if you're going with inwall speakers, that might not be an option.

Is it safe to say that you'd want the center channel on top, or would it be better below? It will be the 58" and I'm planning on mounting it so that the mid point on the screen is at seated eye height.

I have mine on top, and I think that will be closer to ear level for your setup.

Unless you have your TV at a high viewing angle for some reason.

My screen is 2.35 m wide so I have to put the centre right under the projection screen. This puts it about 12" below the line between the stereo tweetersbut still a couple of feet off the floor. The ear is not so good at resolving vertical position, plus the on-screen dialogue-image tends to steer the illusion. Both on film and in 5-channel sound-only this works out OK. I would steer clear of getting too close to the floor or perching it on top of a hollow resonating box like a CRT TV. I put a black rug immediately in front to damp bounce of light and sound off the floor.

Thanks for the replies. My speakers will be flush in-wall speakers. So, I'm guessing I'll place the CC speaker just above the display whick a plan to flush mount into the wall (i.e. the wall bracket will be recessed from the actual sheetrock).

Any thoughts on the speakers that my bro-in-law is using? I know virtually nothing about the speakers other than he's designed quite a few home theater systems and used these in a lot of them. Thanks.
