View Full Version : Possible New Sony Titles (incl: Lawrence of Arabia)
joshd2012 04-10-07, 01:46 PM Sony is also gearing up to maybe announce a handful of summer releases comprised of a diverse selection of films and the return of a previously announced-then-cancelled title. If all goes well, look for the following titles to be announced shortly:
# Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
# Desperado (1995)
# Lawrence of Arabia (Restored Version)
# Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis
# Shottas
# White Chicks
http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=542
I had to put LoA in the title to get your attention. ;)
Well, at least half of those are good...
I can't remember if Metropolis was any good -- that was an animated movie? I saw an animated one called Metropolis and I can picture the art style, but I can't remember the plot or anything...
What is Shottas? I don't think I've ever heard of it?
deckerm 04-10-07, 01:52 PM Well, at least half of those are good...

Those were the three I had in mind =p
I just wasn't sure on Shottas and Metropolis... I know White Chicks isn't very good though.
osiris13 04-10-07, 01:54 PM White Chicks? Seriously?
Paul Arnette 04-10-07, 01:59 PM Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a must for me. I'd give Lawrence of Arabia some serious consideration as well.
Johnsteph10 04-10-07, 02:02 PM I think you should rename the title to "Possible New Sony Release of Lawrence of Arabia.......and some other titles."
:)
Jim Morrison 04-10-07, 02:10 PM Lawrence Of Arabia is a must, i might dabble with Desperado too.
Metropolis with English and Japanese language tracks with subtitles, unlike the UK release with just English.
patrick99 04-10-07, 02:13 PM Please nobody tell Rob that I've never seen LoA.

UK release never actually came out in the end, so even this "maybe" for a US release is welcomed at this point... hopefully we'll get some official word and specs soon.
coneyparleg 04-10-07, 02:47 PM Shottas WOW!!!!
I didn't know this was ever released on anything but bootleg, great movie BTW
Please nobody tell Rob that I've never seen LoA.
I finally saw it about a year ago and i was dissapointed. Probably cause there is so much hype about it. I can totally appreciate it, in that it is an amazing film, but i was fairly bored. Some of the documentary things i've seen on it, like stuff that points out why it is so important, was much more interesting to me than the actual film. I'll probably be shot for this opinion, but there it is. It would make a fantastic blu-ray film though, would look really good on a big screen.
Wendell R. Breland 04-10-07, 02:51 PM I'm in for:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Desperado (1995)
Lawrence of Arabia (Restored Version)
IMO, Desperado had some very neat surround sound effects in the opening scenes. The gun battles had very good sound stems as well.
Im getting
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Desperado (1995)
Lawrence of Arabia (Restored Version)
Possible Metropolis depending on tracks etc.
Bring em on.
Larry Sutliff 04-10-07, 03:06 PM LOA is one of my most wanted titles in high def. I hope this is true(and that Sony does a superlative job with the transfer and encoding).
Mr. Cinema 04-10-07, 03:09 PM We need more classics released. Lawrence of Arabia helps tremendously.
LOA will be great. I had to laugh when I read through the list and it was concluded with White Chicks...lol
Bob Meridian 04-10-07, 03:15 PM CTHD should be good.
LOA and Desperado are both a must buy.
I'm definitely buying Desperado and Lawrence of Arabia. I hope the rest of the El Mariachi trilogy is on the way as well (though I'm not holding my breath for the first one, being low-budget 16mm and all).
Sofdec7 04-10-07, 03:51 PM Metropolis is one movie I've been hoping to see a HD release of for a few months, so this is great news for me. I know it had a lot of negative criticism back around its DVD release but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
With that said, I'm not holding my breath on the blu ray release actually happening :(
nickelplayer6 04-10-07, 07:55 PM crouching tiger is a must buy for me
roma_victor 04-10-07, 08:02 PM In my country they would go crazy for these two (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
& Lawrence of Arabia); this (White Chicks) - not so much.
Sisko197 04-10-07, 08:06 PM Would Sony really put White Chicks into Blu-ray before they finally get around to releasing that announced-but-never-released Gattaca BD?
SirDrexl 04-10-07, 08:55 PM As far as White Chicks is concerned, yeah I would never buy it either, but I'm glad they're putting a variety of movies out.
I hope the rest of the El Mariachi trilogy is on the way as well (though I'm not holding my breath for the first one, being low-budget 16mm and all).
They blew it up to 35mm for theatrical release but there's no reason why they can't produce a nice 16mm transfer.
I'm so pleased about this, Desperado/El Mariachi is the one title I've been hoping Sony would announce early since it was one of the first DVD's I ever bought back in 98. Both films were released on a single disc along with a ton of extras. It makes sense that it's one of the first BD's too
Maybe they'll release it the same day as Sin City as some kind of tie-in
IeraseU 04-10-07, 09:39 PM I've been waiting for Lawrence of Arabia. You could pause that movie at almost any point, and have shots good enough to be postcards more often then not.
youknowryan 04-10-07, 10:05 PM http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=542

It worked. LOA is so good that I'd actually buy it retail at best buy's insan prices and not online to avoid waiting.
Dan Hitchman 04-10-07, 10:06 PM Is this Lawrence the fabled brand new HD transfer from the newly minted and color corrected 65mm IP that was the basis for the fairly recent L.A. 70mm showing?
I hope to all the gods that Robert A. Harris was fully involved in this overhaul of LOA... sound and picture. It is necessary to get as close to the original directionalized dialog and effects as they can.
24 bit audio too!!!
Dan
P.S. If this is the same HD transfer the SuperBit version is taken from then Sony can forget it!
I am surprised that Shottas is going to be released on BD. Real good Jamaican movie.
swifty7 04-10-07, 10:29 PM WHITE CHICKS specification
50GB AVC
DD True HD
DTS MA
and a helluvia of extras all in HD

What a waste of 50GB of space.
Donnie Eldridge 04-10-07, 11:16 PM Crouching Tiger is a must for me, as is Desperado. :)
I would consider Desperado.
Dan Hitchman 04-11-07, 12:35 AM WTF?? Two different lossless tracks? Why in the world would you do that? Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio are both lossless codecs, though Sony's bread 'n' butter player, the PS3, does Dolby TrueHD and not DTS MA right now. You only need one. You don't need PCM if you have a lossless track either. All I can say is that they better both be 24 bit master quality for the space they're wasting!
Sorry to come off sounding harsh, but I just don't get it. I really don't.
Dan
What is Shottas? I don't think I've ever heard of it?
Shottas is a Jamaican movie think a Modern Third World Cop mixed with Scarface (best Description I can think of maybe even Belly instead of Scarface .) It was released on a 2 disc Special Edition DVD which was done quite well. It was a really good movie, BUT if you have a hard time understanding thick accents and hate reading subtitles then it isnt a movie for you. It didnt bother me too much I could understand 99% of it and what I didnt I just took a quick look at the subs.
GizmoDVD 04-11-07, 01:32 AM White Chicks?!?!?!?! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111

There must be something wrong there.
There is no reason whatsoever to have TrueHD and DTS-HD MA on the same disk release.
LPCM and one of the other 2, I can understand (barely).
Need to double-check the info...

I'm pretty sure he's joking here guys.
Is this Lawrence the fabled brand new HD transfer from the newly minted and color corrected 65mm IP that was the basis for the fairly recent L.A. 70mm showing?
Mmmm, I saw a screening of that print a few years back at the Arclight and it was a sight to behold.
LOA is a defo buy for me :)
Fettastic 04-11-07, 10:07 AM Metropolis is pretty good.
Lawrence's first half is awesome, but then it kind of fizzles after that IMHO. Still a very good movie though.
Desperado is the one I'm most excited about.
tutelary 04-11-07, 10:16 AM the whole list is ruined by having white chicks on it. Seriously, what the hell? Who came to this decision with the entire catalog to pick from?? Crouching is just about as bad. Please lord spare me from this crap.
UK release never actually came out in the end, so even this "maybe" for a US release is welcomed at this point... hopefully we'll get some official word and specs soon.
Oh really? Well hopefully if they do decide to release it in the states they'll have pulled their heads out of their asses and decided to give the original language the PCM treatment. A TrueHD track would be just as good as well.
Donnie Eldridge 04-11-07, 10:50 AM I think you can cross Desperado off the list.
Paidgeek,
Any chance you've had a peek at Desperado? Is it in the pipe for this Summer? What kind of shape was/is it in?
I have not seen the master and it is not on the current schedule.
ShagMan 04-11-07, 03:22 PM I'm up for everything on that last except for "Shottas" whatever that is, and White Chicks.
Good to see more anime coming out!

Absolutely! There was no way I could just purchase and enjoy Black Hawk Down because Little Man was released around the same time. It was the same deal with Memento; I couldn't get it because The Benchwarmers was also available. ;)
swifty7 04-11-07, 06:53 PM That joke is about as good as the movie was.
oh! come on! where's your sense of humor? ;) :D
to me white chicks is a very..very funny movie but I wouldn't waste my money buying it on blu-ray as I'm pretty much satisfied with having the SD version.
swifty7 04-11-07, 07:01 PM latest news:
White Chicks first BD title to incorporate Deep Color compatible only with BD players with HDMI 1.3.
:D
Nooooo, desperado is a must get for me. :(
Kilian.ca 04-11-07, 09:22 PM For me, definitely
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
&
Lawrence of Arabia (Restored Version)
JackBauer24 04-11-07, 09:39 PM I think you can cross Desperado off the list.
Perhaps whoever leaked this mistook it for Once upon a time in Mexico? Sony's been promoting that in trailers for a while. I would love either. Or both :D

I believe Desperado is in some of their recent trailer sets too. Along with Badboys and a few other movies, which Paidgeek has mentioned weren't on any schedule of theirs, iirc... Either the schedule they have doesn't go that far out or the trailer's mention of "coming soon" is a bit disingenuous (which is likely).
