First piece of advice is to go here:

takes you to page 1 of the Hitachi F59 Tweaks thread that I started and is full of lots of info from many F59 owners as well as ISF calibrator Robert Jones (aka Mr Bob). Highly suggest perusing the entire thread (not too long--about 25 pgs right now). Lots of good info right up front (look for the Hitachi DIY Guide posted by Lee Bailey and the HDMI service menu fix I posted).
Could be a combo of some settings tweaking (user and service menu), convergence adjustment and maybe some focusing.
Do you have pictures you could post? Better way for others to gauge your description of "fuzzy".
As far as being "whack" that it supports only 540p or 1080i....
Well this is a CRT based HD set. Virtually none of them ever actually displayed anything but 540p/1080i(save for a handfull of pricey Pioneers back in the day that also could resolve 720p).
That being said, just as any 720p HDTV converts other resolutions to its' native 720p, the F59s will convert any other resolution (480i/p, 720p) to either 540p or 1080i--depending on what you set the Virtual HD function to.
Besides, most all broadcast HD these days is in 1080i already (if it's not, it's in 720p). The only thing these sets will not accept (I beleive) is a 1080p signal. Unless you have a PS3/360/BluRay/HDDVD, this doesn't matter. If you do, you simply have it output 1080i.
There are MANY happy F59 owners here. Chances are great that with a little tweaking (or, if you can afford it, a proper pro calibration) you will be more than pleased with these great TVs.
