Some people have reported that their HV-20 recorded whining noise. Some don't.

Here's a public poll to see whether your HV-20 got it or not. You can choose BOTH if your first unit has the whining noise and after you exchanged it the whining noise is no longer there.

Of course, this should be a first-hand experience, not based on the examples you see on the internet.

The manual clearly states you may hear noise from the mechanicals inside the machine when using the built in mic.

the reported whining noise is not motor noise, though. Supposedly it's around 6 to 8 kHz.

there seems to be some variation of quality among these Canon cams. I have seen four HV10s and they all had different noise levels.

I voted no, but I have basically shot casual footage of the kids playing and such so far. When I watch the video I don't notice any noise, which could be due to enough ambient noise in the settings I was shooting or the fact that I am so awestruck by the quality of the HD video :D I could film something in a very quiet room to test whether I notice it, but frankly I don't really care because 99% of the time I won't be filming in that setting anyway.

I tested indoor and outdoor. I may have heard a little whine, but I really couldn't tell even through my large stereo. so I said no.

I've always heard that _all_ cameras have a bit of noise....
