View Full Version : Built in QAM tuner and Tivo?

I have a Westinghouse LCD HDTV with a built in QAM tuner. I love getting OTA HD with it.

However, I also have Tivo (one of the extremely old models).

Is there any way to set my TV up so that I can watch regular cable on TIVO (I like the guide feature and the ability to record shows) yet still be able to watch OTA HD through my TV's built in tuner?

The only way I know how to connect the TIVO is to run the cable wire from the wall into the back of the Tivo and then run another cable wire from the back of the Tivo into the TV.

But using this method I won't be able to watch my OTA HD channels. Any workaround?

If your tivo has S or composite video outputs just run those to the TV as (aux, input 1)
And put the OTA directly into the TV.

Just to nitpick, you're not using the QAM tuner for the OTA. You're using the Westy's ATSC tuner for that.

I too am wondering the same thing the OP is asking. I just bought a Magnavox 42" LCD HDTV (37MF321D), and I, too, am picking up a few OTA HD channels.

I'm not quite sure if I understood you right. Are you saying to just run the TiVo to my TV through S-video or composite, and run coax directly from the wall to the TV for HD programming? Are you pretty much saying that there's no way to TiVo the HD programming?

I am not a TIVO owner but, I believe only the newest TIVO series 3 can directly tune and decode HD programming, it is about $800.

After doing a bit of research, you are correct. Oh well, that's alright.
