These look fantastic! I wonder if the trailer was made from an earlier build. I love the very subtle cartoony kind of style instead of just a generic, realistic look.

Well, every port so far has seemed to suffer a bit. It will be a bummer if the game was made for the 360 and ported to the PS3...

Ubisoft doesn't do that great of a job using this process.

I'm not totally up-to-date on all the GTAIV info, but hearing that the games will be identical on the 360's DVD-9 disc and the PS3's Blu-Ray bothers me... I mean, if anything, I'd want them to fill that 25 gb up with unique audio for the music/talk radio stations...

And then exclusive episodic content on the 360 only? I gotta wonder what they're doing.. .This franchise was made by PS2 users... their biggest fanbase is surely still there. And by release date, the install base (ps3 v 360) should be relatively close.

The 3 versions are being made concurrently. There's no porting here.

Also, at the very least. The PS3 version will have better audio simply because of the BD.

The PC versions previous trailed by a year or more... I know because I preferred Vice City on PC. Unfortunately, I couldn't wait for the PC version and got the PS2 version of San Andreas.

I definitely hope we see more unique content between the two or it will be a hard choice between the 360 and PS3 versions. IF the PS3 version maximizes the use of the 25GB Blu-ray and/or the PS's superior CPU power, I will go that way. If they're the same, then I'm likely to go to the 360 version since it looks like it will have better content support (at least for now). If PSN/Home can match the 360's support, then I'll flip a coin or something. :D

They will make all versions look and play the same. Lowest common denominator. MS and Sony are their clients. They don't want to piss of either. Only exclusives will push either system, epecially the PS3 due to its unique architecture.

UxiSXRD
04-11-07, 06:55 PM
For gameplay and resolution, this is likely the same. I COULD see them offer extra content like maps, "episodes", vehicles, etc from the PS3 at launch that the 360 will be using as a batch of download content. Some of it could be free or spread through the payed installments that we're mostly hearing about for the 360. This way the end result is the same (same development, payed out, etc) but more stuff simply fits on the 25GB Blu-ray than the 9GB DVD for the 360 version.

THEN they diverge to their microtransaction differentiation. Even so, I'd see similar effort taken on each system even if names and particulars might differ for the different unique versions...

the reason for not having planes doesnt have to do with 9/11 (think about it, san andreas came out 3 years after 9/11 and had planes). Its because they want the game to be more realistic, and someone who has never flown a plane hopping in one and taking off is not exactly feasible in life.

But flying a helicopter is? There is supposed to be helicopters in this game that you can fly around in.

EDIT:
Kobe Asks: I heard that you can’t fly in Liberty City anymore. What is up with that?! Flying is one of my favorite parts of this series!

This is incorrect. There are no airplanes in the game, but flying is still there. One means of this is the helicopter. As Dan pointed out, this is just one city and a plane really doesn’t fit into that very well for gameplay. Flying is still very much a large part of the game.

the way games are developed they have 3 different rendering methods depending on platform. (PC, ps3, 360) The thing is if the engine they're using is usually targeted to a specific console ps3 or 360. Since they're architecturally different one will suffer.

Here are some quotes from an interview OPM UK had with Dan Houser, which I found to be quite interesting:

OPM UK: How has the team found cross-developing for PS3 and Xbox?

DH: It's a challenge.

OPM UK: On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, wheras on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard drive and you're workng with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?

DH: Yep. To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet. Both of them have enormous challenges. Again, that's been an advantage of having the guys at San Diego who are freakishly clever and full-time dedicated to us, but we're not there with either [format] yet. There are problems on both. We'll get there with both, but both have their own particular pleasures and pains.

OPM UK: Any plans to use the Sixaxis motion sensitivity?

DH: Again, haven't fully decided. We're just fiddling around with all that stuff. If it's not fun, then definitely not. It's not the kind of thing we do just to say we've put it in. If we can figure out something to do with it, then of course.

That kinda sucks - with games getting so expensive it's almost guaranteed most will be dual platform - does this mean that the PS3 will be held back by the 360's inferior hardware?

Considering it has been said that they actually went backwards and the scale of this game is smaller than San Andreas, I can understand why there are no planes. Where are you gonna fly, Brooklyn to Queens?

contraints of the 360? I find this hilarious because they could be so easily fixed.

1st off. Just make the hard drive required for the game and be done with it. I'm sure MS might not like this idea, but it was a bad idea to release a core to begin with. MS admit it, get over it, lets move on and stop making things harder for developers. This is one thing Sony did right.

2nd: The media issues. So a DVD is smaller then blu ray. Are we all that lazy that we couldn't get up and just swap dvds at some point? I mean, back in the day of Commodore 64's or 286/386 PC's it was not uncommon to have to use multiple floppies for one game. Ultima series almost all had multiple floppies. Now, I'm not talking about having 10 dvd's for one game here. But surely, 2 wouldn't kill us.

UxiSXRD
05-01-07, 01:01 PM
Yeah, I kinda wish MS would discontinue the core 360 and just add the notification to certain games that an HD is required. Old Core customers can slowly get hard drives as the games they want require them.

I'm not particularly interested in swapping discs, either, if it's avoidable. Having a game available on a single Blu-ray for my PS3 or multiple DVD for my 360 would definitely make me lean towards the PS3.

NoThru22

There was already a football (soccer) manager game in Europe that required the hard-drive on the 360. Also, Final Fantasy XI does as well.

I'm just wondering how much time and money the developers waste on trying to get around silly things like dvd rom size, and whether or not a hd is in use when they could just put their foot down and say, this is it, take it or leave it and get the game out much faster.

Latham99

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft eventually phased out the Core model primarily for this reason. As far as DVD swapping goes, I say be my guest. I just hope that the multiplatform devs don't develop PS3 games with a 7+ Gb file limit in mind. Of course Microsoft could simply do what they should have done originally, and incorporate an HD-DVD drive into the Elite. I'm still trying to figure out why they didn't.

Well, seeing as the core is still for sale (or was last time i checked) im pretty sure microsoft would be right pissed, as would all of the core adopters.

as for you disc swapping idea, i agree for some games (linear rpg's/fps's) but for a sandbox game? Could you imagine having to swap discs every few minutes as you drive around the city. "arrived at Queens - INSERT DISC 4" "Arrived at downtown - INSERT DISC 2" Just wouldnt work.

I remember playing the Myst sequel Riven for the original Playstation. It had to have been like 5 or 6 discs, and was indeed a total pain to constantly swap. I hate to say it, but this is the reality that Xbox360 owners are going to have to live with in the next few years. Perhaps a new formatting technology will surface, that allows more data to be stored and read on standard DVD's.

After seeing this trailer, the fantasy of what GTA IV could be is starting to fade away, and the reality of it being just another game is setting in. I don't know, but for some reason, this trailer has lowered my expectations a bit. This is still a mandatory day 1 purchase, and I'm sure it will be a great game, but I don't think this is going to be light years ahead of Saint's Row.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune remains my most wanted game in 2007, right now, atm. Based on this trailer, I'm not moving GTA IV above Drake's Fortune. Not yet anyways. Maybe when we see some actual real gameplay, instead of cut-scenes and cinematics and such.

How many times does this need to be explained? There are no planes in the game because you are only going to be in one city--who flies a plane from one side of NYC to the other side? No one. There will be helicopters in the game, though.

And, again, there has already been a GTA game with airplanes since 2001, so why do people keep thinking it has anything to do with 9/11?

Nah, there were some shots of gameplay in there.

Five Cool Things About GTA IV
As you watch the new Grand Theft Auto trailer depicting life on the streets in Liberty City, be sure to watch for these cool additions:

1. Graphics
The coolest feature so far is the upgraded RAGE Graphics Engine (also used to power Table Tennis), which finally replaces Renderware under the GTA hood. RAGE now features a heavily customized version of Natural Motion's "Euphoria" physics engine, which got major attention last year when LucasArts demo'ed it as part of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars games. Expect even more excitement as you see how the teaming of RAGE and Euphoria affects movement, gunplay, climbing, and driving. Rockstar also points out that everything you see in the GTA IV trailers is capture in-game -- there are no underhanded renders here.
2. Sound
While the Natural Motion has a visible effect on the physical aspects of action and gunplay, even more noticeable is the game's audio system. Positional audio makes for the sort of intense, fun gun battles we've always wanted in GTA. The streets sound -- and feel -- real.

3. Tunes
Part and parcel of the audio system, of course, is Rockstar's trend-setting ability to craft a killer soundtrack. The new trailer is scored with "Arm In Arm (Shy Child Remix)" by New York City-based band The Boggs. The idea was to show a real street-level view of Rockstar's version of the city with a band that belongs there. To that effect, you'll be seeing even more licensed music from all genres and time periods, since the soundtrack team is no longer confined to a specific decade.

4. Time
While Rockstar is reluctant to discuss the details, time is a big factor in GTA IV. The new trailer indicates in subtle ways how the passage of time might affect the game, and there are clues that indicate some missions, or mission elements, might be time-specific. And if that's the case, then can multiple outcomes and branching storylines be far behind? Don't expect a mission flowchart that looks like a New York City subway map, but Rockstar could surprise us.

5. The Details
The vastly upgraded graphics don't just make for a shinier front end. Rockstar has worked to make GTA IV follow through, from the biggest details to the smallest. You can see it in the way Niko leans around a corner, or how he sways while hanging (in real-time, procedural motion) from the skid of a helicopter. It's the glance into a car and the ways in which the streets of Liberty City are teeming with the life we've been waiting to see from the series. Rockstar claims the new graphics, sound, and details make the game more beautiful, not more disturbing, and we're almost ready to believe them.

Regardless if it was cutscene or gameplay it was all in-game.

Well, its definitely all in-game as all of Rockstar's trailers are but these are definitely cutscenes ... unless they're going with those cinematic angle shots like Drake's Fortune which I doubt they are. Either way, game looks good ... can't wait to get it.

What's gotten to me with Drake's is how organic the motions of the characters (playable and NPC) are. I'm not talking abouthe mocap cutscene stuff either, but the gameplay. Faces still aren't quite right tho. Getting there, but not there.

I hope that the new Indy game is as organic. I love Indy...

"You want my word? You got my word!"

Call me crazy but that sounds like Tom Sizemore is making a return to the GTA series...

Hopefully, he's already finished recording all of his voice over work if that's true....

Considering he is going to jail, I agree with you ;)

I was going to post about this earlier but I wanted to confirm with my friend what I noticed before I said anything. Did you guys notice the framerate? Seemed as thought they were having some FPS issues there. For example, the framerate looks really back when he jumps out the rolling car and the car crashes. I thought maybe it was my TV or something but my TV is top of the line ;) ... I had to confirm with a friend first and he told me the same thing.

Since the game is still being developed we should worry about that when it hits retail if the framerate is having issues.

It was a highly compressed video. I wouldn't put too much stock in frame rates at this point.

And, again, there has already been a GTA game with airplanes since 2001, so why do people keep thinking it has anything to do with 9/11?

Were the GTA games with planes since 2001 based in New York?

Nope. But, I still don't see the point in having airplanes to fly from one side of a city to the other side. And, there will be helicopters--something you would find people using to fly from one side of the city to the other.

Just because something was in a previous iteration of a game doesn't mean it needs to be here for this one if it doesn't serve the story. Personally, I hope to GOD that you don't have to work out, or feed, this guy. To me, that was one step from having to track down a bathroom to pee while running around smacking people with a tire iron.

To decry a game as "politically correct" based on internet speculation when one of the main things you'll be doing is attacking the police with various armament just strikes me as asinine internet noise. If someone can tell me a legitimate reason to have airplanes when you are only in one city, I'm all ears. Err...eyes.

lol, so true.

Planes in New York City?! *GASP* Heavens no! I'll stick to murdering peace officers and innocents, thank you!
