I am in need of some serious advice. I am a complete noob when it comes to Audio. I'll explain what i have going on right now.
I converted an all in one bose speaker system from 1998 into a 5.1 system about a year ago. What i did is i got rid of the subwoofer and receiver that came with my bose system. I in turn hooked up the 5 double cube speakers to a Yamaha HTR-5840 receiver and a JBL Northridge E series E150P subwoofer.

So i am clearly running some outdated speakers on this system. Is this really a bad set up? Am i missing out on some excellent sound because i am using some speakers from 1998? I don't even know where to start looking for new speakers. How much would i have to spend to get 5 new speakers and where should i look? Any links or advice would be great! Thanks

The short answer is almost anything will be better than your Acoustamass Cubes. Here are a few links to start with of companies that offer moderately priced speaker systems. You may want to replace the sub at the same time with a better subwoofer.

It would help if you gave a price range, size restrictions, planned usage (do you want music to sound as good as possible, or do you want the loudest bang crash possible for your money, or a compromise).

I would like to spend as little money as possible...i know that is a hard thing to do

I mostly use my speakers for movies and video games. when it comes to music i have my PC. I am moving to a new apt. and the living room dimensions are 12'x24'. I hope that gives some insight.

You would get more help here if you provided how much you are willing to spend.

As little as possible is kind of vague, don't you think?
