View Full Version : Klipsch Recomendations?
Goofy1477 04-11-07, 12:20 PM I have a set of klipsch quintets. I love these speakers. I am looking to get some used klipsch speakers. Maybe new depending on price.
The speakers I am looking at as of now are the:
RF 35
RF 3
RF 3 II
RF 5
RF 82
Note: these are all floor standing speakers. I would be looking to get the matching center and rear speakers.
Any advice on quality or sound would be helpful. For now I would be running an Onkyo 6.1 receiver with the speakers, but I would be upgrading in some time to a Marantz 5.1 or 7.1 receiver.
NOTE:
Changed my mind. I am thinking now towards the RF 82's and RF 5's.
Goofy1477 04-11-07, 01:23 PM Ok. So far I was talking to one person and he told me that the RF 3's were made in China and were not that good. He told me the RF 3 II's were a much better speaker.
madpoet 04-11-07, 01:55 PM Goofy, is there a reason you'd go with the RF82 over the slightly more expensive RF7s? If you check out the Klipsch owners thread they are highly recommended, and at a very good price on everyone's favorite acution house.

I'm not a fan of the 10" woofers in the RF7's. I know they are great speakers,
madpoet 04-11-07, 02:41 PM Ah, well then... I can understand that :)
Goofy1477 04-11-07, 04:49 PM What about the RF 82's VS the RF 5's. How do they compare. I know they both have horn tweeters and 2 8" subs. Sound quality and speaker quality? Which is better or are they both on par?

That's not true. The RF-3 II uses Monster Cable and that is the only difference to my knowledge. FWIW, my RF-3's were made in Hope, Arkansas and are signed by one of their artisans. The current Synergy and lower Reference lines are now made abroad.
Insofar as not liking the 10 inch woofers--I agree there are scenarios where they may not work out as well as the RF-5's, but imo if you don't like the way the big 10 inchers sound--you may prefer the newer Reference line. My 2 cents

It depends on what you are looking for. The new Reference line have larger cabinets, newly redesigned horn geometry, reworked crossovers, and improved bracing. The end result is a sound that is not as up front as the older line, (though they do retain the fantastic Klipsch signature dynamic range), better mids, and IMO excellent overall balance. The highs are much more natural and not as "in your face" as the older line. The older line is more "in your face". It's like listening to a live concert at all times. Now, this is my opinion. If you asked some of the owners of the previous Klipsch Reference line, you would probably find out that a fairly good number of them would jump at an RF-7 without batting an eye lash. And an additional number would not trade their Heritage line speakers for either of the Reference speakers.
In any case, think of the newer line as smoother and not as "up front".
Zen Traveler 04-11-07, 06:30 PM Thanks for being gentle on us, Wolfsbane. :D
C22350Z 04-11-07, 11:29 PM I bought my RF-82's as my first set of fronts ( because we all know at some point were going to want something more expensive.. RIGHT!?) and 100% love them... cant recommend anything different
and if you know where i can find the matching Center which is supposed to be the RC-62 if my memory is telling me correctly... id like a hint... best i can find is 2 on ebay and nothing local

LOL... last year when I was in the process of checking out the new line, there were some young kids in the electronic shop oggling the RF-83 theatre set up. There was a gentleman trying to explain to a lady, who was at the place with her husband, the differences between the newer RF-83, the RF-7, and a Synergy system that the lady apparently auditioned at BB. The lady couldn't get over the size of the system. In any case, the young kid, trying to be cute, kept putting in his two cents on how the "older" line would probably be better suited to her. And.... he kept using the rationale that people's hearing is affected as we get older, and the older line, (the RF-7), high frequency characteristics would probably suit her best.
The kid was lucky to make it out of the shop alive... but he was certainly entertaining.
Goofy1477 04-12-07, 10:45 AM So I went to BB and listened to the RF 82's. WOW I really like how those sounded. Unfortunatly I could not get them to give me a better price on thsoe speakers.
I did however find a steal on some Klipsch F1's for $250 for 2 speakers. Open box. I took those, so I can eventually use them as my rear channel speakers. I thought it was a great deal. They are not the best sounding speakers, and with my crappy Oynko amp they are way underpowered. I guess I am now going to have to look online and try and find myself a nice Carver or Meranze reciever/amp.
As for the other speakers, the RF 82's, I am going to wait a couple months till I go to NYC and I am going to go to JR's and pick up the 82's. I might also pick up the matching center and rear channels.
