View Full Version : What's a WOW upgrade for Pearl owners?

I came to this forum having started in the sub-$3,000 world. Sub 3K, the HD70/HD1000 debate is very like that between the Pearl and the RS1 here--both are very good units, not too far apart in price with the nod going to the newer technology. As a Pearl owner, I know I'm in at the bottom end of this forum. My WOW moment was upgrading from my HD 70 to the Pearl. The PQ, contrast, and sharpness just blew me away.

I know many people prefer the RS1 to the Pearl, but the consensus seems to be that the difference is not great enough to justify moving from the Pearl to the RS1. As the sky is the limit in this forum, what would be an equivalent WOW upgrade to moving to the Pearl from the HD 70 for a Pearl owner? The only limitation would be that the PJ be a home theater-type unit (i.e., suitable for a screen of around 130 inches or so).

If you like a super sharp image, perhaps moving to a dVision 1080p would WOW you. If not, you'll have to step into 3 chip 1080p DLP territory!

Hi, Criag!

I was reading (and enjoying!) your thread on the dVision yesterday--in fact, it's what inspired me to start this thread. It sounds like an awesome PJ. The great thing about this forum is that I get to hear about PJs I've never even heard of or considered before.

Thanks,

Brian

Heck - I hadn't heard of it either until a fateful day sitting on the can when I picked up an older Widescreen Review article on it by Greg Rogers. The rest as they say, is history!!

Personally, I felt that moving from a Pearl to a Sharp XV-Z20000 was two notches up. You see this projector all over the net for just north of $6,000, which is a lot less than people suppose they'll pay.

Thanks,

Nick

But do 2 notches up = WOW?? Thats the question!

The RS1 is definitely a WOW upgrade from my Ruby, in my book.

Brian, interesting question. The problem is that it will be impossible to quantify what WOW means to dfferent people.

Some will say that moving from a Pearl to an RS1 is a WOW. Others will say the RS1 is better - but the difference is not WOW.

In my experience I have not seen any sub $10K projectors that are WOW better than good 720p DLP. Better...Yes. WOW Better...No. I guess I am not easily WOWed.

Partly due to the much brighter picture with a new bulb!

Two primary things that wow. More birghtness and higher contrast.

Going to more brightness may not do it for you if you step back in contrast. Check out the RS

Brightness difference can play a big impact in a direct comparison such as replace a old projector with a new one.

Last year I replaced my last projector Epson TW200H over 3600 hours bulb with a new one and the hugh brightness gave me WOW! :D

PS: some friends are setting up a RS1/Pearl open shootout. I asked them to get both units with close bulb hour for a fair comparison.

Good point! My move was from a low end 720p, the HD 70, so the WOW factor was pretty high. In the sub-$3000 category, discussions centered around HD 70 vs Mits 1000. Some people were saying that the Mits was "head and shoulders" above the 70 and the difference was "night and day." I had the chance to trade my 70 for a Mits 1000 at an even exchange. I was able to review them on identical screens with the same HD DVD signal source side by side. And guess what? The difference was hardly noticeable. I guess WOW is, as you say, in the eye of the perceiver!

That will be an interesting shootout! I think many here would like to know how that goes!

Brightness and contrast--now there's the Holy Grail! (I wonder if you could get the same effect with those dilation drops opthalmologists use??)
