I'm going to purchase a 57' inch RPTV Mitsubishi WD-57731 from a friend. It doesn't come in the original box. Can I safely transport this huge tv on it's back-side rather than straight-up on my tiny SUV :) ? It's about a 20 mile drive. Is it safe or not, what parts should I worry about? How did many of you transport your HUGE tv home other than standard u-haul or store shipment. Thanks :)

Does the store have a return policy? If there is any damage internally during the move I would just return it.

The 30-day return policy has passed. Is there anything wrong with placing it horizontally rather than vertically during the transport?

I brought my 56" home from the store on it's back, it survived just fine. Just be very careful about any bumps.

Thanks! At least I know someone has done it.

Find a friend with a pickup so it can be transported upright. Ideally it shouldn't be transported on its side.

Assassin - a store shouldn't be responsible for improper handling by a consumer. That's an abuse of the return policy as far as I'm concerned.

I disagree. If they don't want to accept units that are damaged when you move them yourself then they should make it mandatory that you have to pay them to have it delivered. Its not my fault my 61" TV won't fit in the back of my Honda.

Edit: I'm not talking about cracks and broken screens. That's obviously misuse. I'm talking about the circuit boards/lamps/circuitry coming loose or being damaged from the ride home due to typical roadway bumps and vibrations.

RPTV can't be that delicate to transport. Can it?

If something comes loose or fails when the consumer is handling a unit properly, that's one thing. What I said was that I didn't think the store should be responsible for improper handling by a consumer. When a unit is clearly marked that it needs to be transported upright, transporting it on it's side is improper as far as I'm concerned.

I think you're putting stress on components that were not meant to be stressed, If this is a CRT RP then you should rent a truck and move it upright
