View Full Version : PS3 Digital and Analog Audio

Folks,

A quick question ... ok, probably not so quick. As far as I can figure it out, the PS3 will put out digital audio or analog audio, but not both concurrently. I've got a main home theater where we go component video to the flat panel and digital audio to the receiver for 5.1. I run this, and other sources, through an 8x2 switcher. Unfortunately, the Living Room TV is just a TV (nice Sony XBR2, tho) and can take either HDMI or analog audio. The PS3 is awesome for home movies and pictures, so we show those on the Living Room TV, but without audio, until I find a D-A conversion solution (or a Component + DigAudio to HDMI solution, which is surprisingly hard).

Is there something I'm missing to get the box to put out digital and analog audio concurrently like most other home entertainment devices, or is this just a painful fact of a game trying to play in the DVD, et al space? It's the one thing driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Welcome Dan,

You confused me a bit on the setup since you mention the L/R and the Main Home Theater, but let me try ...

First, NO it will not do Digital and Analog simultaneously, so you can put that to rest. From what I can tell most folks, like myself, leave both connections hooked up and manually change the settings on the PS3 back and forth as needed. Not much of a problem for me, since I only switch to Digital on the weekends for some DVD's.

As a reminder, here is a doc page with the settings --> http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html

Thanks much! I'm sure any confusion is due to my poor description, mostly due to a long day a work and a dramatic lack of caffeine. Overall, this isn't a huge issue, but I was hoping that my entire setup could pass the babysitter test. I'd even be OK if I could create a User called Living Room that would know that audio should switch to analog. Alas, that doesn't seem to save.

Again, thanks for the info.
