View Full Version : How to connect PS3 by HDMI and get 5.1 sur-round sound?
Audiorichard 04-11-07, 09:17 PM Hi, I am new to this forum and I have a quick question about connect my PS3 to my current HD system.
Here is my current system:
LCD Sharp 37" 1080p (model: 62U)
Cambridge Audio 2-channel Audio amp
Playstation 3 (of course!!)
I plan to upgrade my amp, what kind of amp should I get in order to get 5.1 and 1080p HDTV? Please give me an model name of amp if you would.
If I am not plan to upgrade my amp now, how do I able to get audio and 1080p from my PS3? since I don't want to use my TV speaker, it sounds bad compare with my dynaudio speaker. How do I connet my audio amp to ps3 with hdmi output from ps3?
Please advise!! Thanks alot.

Get a receiver with HDMI (at least with v1.1 and can process multi-channels PCM audio stream). There are quite a few to choose from Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc. Connect your PS3 to the receiver for multi-channels audio sound (and video switching). If you can wait for a few more months, you can get one with HDMI v1.3 and the CODEC to decode those new multi-channels audio stream like Dolby Digital Plus, etc. I don't know which Dynaudio speakers you have but most of the ones that I have read (I have never had one... I'm into electrostatic speakers) about in mag's and websites are quite difficult to drive to their full potential. Most of the lower and mid-end receivers may not have the juice to give it justice. You will have to choose wisely.
Or, if you fancy good audio quality (I assumed you are since you paid for a pair of Dynaudio speakers) and are willing to pay you may want to look at some of those latest pre-processors from Anthem (e.g. AVM50, Statement D2) and others that can process audio stream via HDMI (again, at least v1.1). You will need to get a multi-channels power amp though (or alternatively keep your existing power amp for the front 2 channels and a 3-channels power amp for the center and surround channels for a 5.1 setup).

Are there any quick way to use PS3 as a CD player? since I don't want to turn on TV everytime when I want to listen SACD music.
thx.

Are there any quick way to use PS3 as a CD player? since I don't want to turn on TV everytime when I want to listen SACD music. The PS3 comes with an AV MultiOut cable. Connect the Red+White RCAs to your amp and you'll get stereo sound. This is the best way to get sound from stereo SACDs.
Anything multichannel, you have to upgrade your amp.

Audiorichard 04-12-07, 10:48 PM are there any quick way to put the cd and listen to the music without turn on the tv, then choose play on the main meau?
cooper1010 04-13-07, 08:42 AM DVDs and games auto-play (unless you turn that feature off in the XMB), I imagine CDs would do the same (but am unable to test that for you right now).
Union0015 04-13-07, 08:55 AM I don't own a PS3, but I plan on getting one soon, so I thought I'd chime in with a response and hopefully someone can clarify if I am wrong.
Can't he run the HDMI into the TV and then an optical cable in a receiver? There should be an option of where he wants the audio to go. Does the PS3 allow you to do this? I will probably set mine up as component + optical, but the above HDMI method is another option.

- The PS3 will allow you to do this, but the TV may be the problem. Most TVs will not pass Dolby Digital through the optical output from any of the inputs. It will only pass a stereo signal.
The optical output on the TV will only pass Dolby Digital from the internal ATSC tuner.
but there is no reason why he couldn't run the hdmi from the ps3 to the tv, and the optical from the ps3 to the receiver.

- That's definitely the better way to do it. I think the problem is a lot of people try to use their TV as an audio switch.
Bull1962 04-13-07, 09:55 AM but there is no reason why he couldn't run the hdmi from the ps3 to the tv, and the optical from the ps3 to the receiver. Yes, no reason at all.
CDs will also autoplay if you turn on that option in the XMB.
Audiorichard 04-13-07, 03:25 PM Cool, I will try to turn on the option in XMB.
By the way, is it a better idea to connect HDMI into my TV, then use optical to my receiver to get 5.1 output?
Any suggestions are welcome.

Depends on the TV. Most tvs will process on 2channels of sound via HDMI. Thats what the TV will Typically send out of it's Optical port too, 2 ch stereo. Check and see if your TV will send 5.1 via optical.

Optical from PS3 or TV? Best is HDMI from PS3 to TV and optical from PS3 to receiver.

yes, use optical from ps3 to receiver and hdmi from ps3 to TV. I guess it is the best result we can get, right?
By the way, I tried to check on XMB, there are an auto-play option there, however, I still have to turn on my TV -> go to MUSIC (meau) -> PLAY
If I want to use PS3 as my normal CD player, and I don't want to turn on my TV everytime I wanna to listen my CD (my audio output will be connect to my receiver) How do I do that?
I use PS3 HDMI connection to send video to Panasonic Plasma 50phd8uk. For audio I use to AV Multi-Out cable connector supplied with PS3 to obtain L/R audio since my TV doesn't have any speakers and I have an old receiver which doesn't have optical. Its not 5.1 but works fine. my 2 cents.
