View Full Version : IGN Gives "Pulse" HD DVD PQ a 10/10
MidnightWatcher 04-11-07, 11:30 PM IGN gives "Pulse" on HD DVD a perfect 10/10 for PQ and a solid 9/10 for AQ.
"Shot in a palette consisting of mostly blacks, blues, blacks, sickly greens, and more blacks, then brutally color-timed for maximum darkness and decay, the 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer - actually, all widescreen HD movies are anamorphic, aren't they? - conveys the doom and gloom with exceptional detail. Fine detail in shrubbery and bricks is crisp and free of moiré and aliasing artifacts that some HD transfers still have trouble with.
A very light film grain is present, but it adds to the film-like patina of image. Shadow details are intentionally dark and free of crushing and the black levels are sooty dark. No enhancement was noted and as fine as the standard DVD transfer was, this is noticeably better, though viewers with larger sets would probably appreciate the difference more."

Iggster 04-11-07, 11:54 PM ign= dont know waht their talking about
i remember the shot of the empty classroom when everyone is missing almost theirs some serious banding.
also they said the departed sucked? hah departeds picture quality is a bunch better from better colors to sharper picture to better contrast.
I agree their reviews are all over the place.
Several years ago I used to swear by their reviews for games, until I started noticing some jarring discrepancies between their reviews and my own observations/opinions. I switched to gamespot and never looked back, though by the looks of their recent reviews not much has changed.
turansformer 04-12-07, 01:12 AM Didn't IGN give The Departed a really bad score?

Yep. I'll admit it does make you wonder.
boblinds 04-12-07, 02:49 AM And they don't know what "anamorphic" is.
patrick99 04-12-07, 05:54 AM Didn't IGN give The Departed a really bad score?
Well that's a big plus for IGN in my book.

Kudos to IGN for noticing it.
They liked it better than the original????

Are you and Patrick attatched at the hip or something? You seem to go everywhere together.
Pulse looks fine but I seem to recall digital artifacting. And The Departed looks great so I can't identify with those remarks at all.
bases1616 04-12-07, 04:26 PM MidnightWatcher stick with reading reviews from highdefdigest.com and you can not go wrong. IGN still has some growing up to do in the HD movie review market. Now games on the other hand they are the best.

That I agree with, but it is interesting to get their impression of a few HD DVD titles, especially since they are owned by FOX.

Agreed....with everything you said.
Boy they must be blind. Its the worst HD DVD I ever bought. The movie was shot in mostly dark because prob of a very low budget. Good premis but very bad execution. The movie just sux's big...
mr stroke 04-12-07, 05:47 PM WOW...I am supprised you guys thought the PQ was so bad, I really thought it was pretty good, not KK quality but deffenitly high tier 1
(and yes IGN is pretty wacky on any type of reviews-movies,games,dvd's)
alluringreality 04-12-07, 06:16 PM I agree with highdefdigest that this doesn't have perfect picture quality. On my digital display there's noise like they mention in their review. Of course, when I've seen them list displays they're also using digital type TVs like LCD and DLP.
brywalker 04-12-07, 07:16 PM I give the story a 1/10.
Oh, and The Departed transfer sucks ass.
HPforMe 04-12-07, 08:15 PM They fail to mention there is a TrueHD track and a DD+ track. As far as the PQ is concerned. 10/10 is goofy. However, that's a product of the movie itself. The PQ is reflecting the original so maybe as a hi-def disk with the muted pallet around 7/10.
deanzsyclone 04-12-07, 09:11 PM IGN... lol.. I think Ray Charles can give better reviews, look how they screwed up The Departed.
The reviews they put out arn't worth wasting our time reading.
Oh, and The Departed transfer sucks ass.
LOL /\
SD = suck ass
MPEG2 for Hi-Def = suck ass
Titles like The Fugitive, Full Metal Jacket, The Dirty Dozen, etc = "suck ass" - if you're honestly saying when you pop in The Departed on your rig it looks equal to or less then those lower tier 3/tier 4 titles then I'm sorry, but any opinion you share about PQ cannot be taken seriously....The Departed looks light years better then those TRULY "suck ass" discs.
metalsaber 04-12-07, 10:14 PM Pulse was not 10/10. IGN is out to lunch.
Doug Schiller 04-12-07, 10:51 PM I rented Pulse last week on HDDVD.
Besides the fact that I couldn't finish it out of boredom, you could have easily fooled me that I was watching the SD version.
