In case you haven't seen it.....this is a great deal for those looking to get into a multi-channel, HDMI 1.3 equipped, PCM
capable receiver from a quality brand, and at a reasonable price :D

I know there's another thread on receivers, but this one is particularly interesting as it has deep-color capability
and decodes both lossless high definition audio codecs.

Yes, hurt me. I just ordered the 604 last week. Had I known I would have held off another week.:(

Regardless, it doesn't matter much, HMDI 1.1 equipped receivers like the Onkyo 604 is more than adequate just as long as Sony upgrades the PS3 to HDMI 1.3 and to decode the advanced audio codecs internally like they originally promised.

But looking at the icons on the pic, does that mean this receiver will decode DTSHD MA?

I was going to get one of the new Sony's but it looks like all of the other manufacturers are starting to step it up so I'll hold off. This one looks quite nice.

One question, would I be able to send a 720p signal via HDMI from the PS3 to this, and then output 1080i from the component out on the receiver to go to my non-720p HDTV? It says it will upconvert but doesn't specify if that is only through HDMI. That would be a great solution for our current non-720p HDTV's.

One question, would I be able to send a 720p signal via HDMI from the PS3 to this, and then output 1080i from the component out on the receiver to go to my non-720p HDTV? PS3 can output 720p for games if the PS3 games support 1080i/p. For BD movies however, that's a no-go.

I assume you want to use the receiver to upscale the 720p video (say RFOM) to your TV so that you can get 1080i to go with your non-720p HDTV. I have no answer to that. You might want to check the online manual for this unit, if there is one.

That is assuming it doesn't have the HDCP handshake issue with the PS3 that the 604 has. (having to change audio inputs to get sound back)

Does look very nice and that is a great price, I wish the next one was a little closer in price (I want 3 hdmi in).

7.1 multichannel inputs is not what they meant. Lots of low-end receivers have 7.1 multichannel inputs these days.

They're talking about 7.1 PCM/Lossless output which it should do if it's HDMI 1.3 certified, but there are no guarantees. They ask because the 604 only support 5.1 PCM output.

But as I said before, it might all be meaningless if Sony doesn't upgrade the PS3 to support HDMI 1.3 output properly. Once they do a 604 or any other HDMI 1.1 equipped receiver will be all you need.

I can't tell if this will output all inputs via HDMI?
I don't care if it upconverts, but will it send all signals via 1 HDMI cable?

Exactly. If the HDMI handshake problems have been addressed, I'd love to go with the new Onkyo. Otherwise, I'll have to look elsewhere, personally.

Where does it say anything about Deep Color?

Where does it say anything about Deep Color?

Deep Color™: HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification.

* Lets HDTVs and other displays go from million of colors to billions of colors.
* Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors.
* Enables increased contrast ratio
* Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white
* At 30-bit pixel depth, a four times improvement would be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more.

Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 removes all limits on color selection

* Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
* Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
* Enables displays with natural, vivid colors

It's supposedly part of the HDMI 1.3 spec.

It's supposedly part of the HDMI 1.3 spec.

Maybe it does indeed support it, but I just think we have to be careful when assuming what these devices will and won't do just because of the HDMI version number. There are so many issues with these receivers not doing this or that, and the PS3 doesn't pass SACD as DSD (supported in 1.2) even though it's 1.3.

Very true. I'm just going on the hopeful assumption that in order to bear the 1.3 compliant designation, these issues have been addressed on this particular model.

Ok, quick question: If I currently have a 5.1 set up and wanted to upgrade to this set up, how would the receiver handle only having that many speakers? I really want to upgrade my receiver (mainly for video reasons), but I don't want to have to upgrade my speakers too.

I would assume that if I just connect the 5 speakers and my sub that I could set the receiver for that many speakers. I just don't have anywhere in my living room that I could even put two more speakers.

I just don't have anywhere in my living room that I could even put two more speakers. Basically the receiver will automatically know IF you have speakers connected to the Left Center and Right Center surround connectors. It'll then function as a 5.1 setup and will downmix any 6.1 or 7.1 audio to 5.1.

For most movies, you won't get any effect - except for The Descent on BD and the LOTR trilogy with DD EX and DTS ES Discrete. Not so much for games either, especially for FPS since you'd be moving around a lot faster to detect nuances in the audio mix.

Give us a review in a month when you get your unit.

On all the Onkyo's I've had experience with (including my own) you had to go into the menu and turn the extra speaker(s) OFF or it would send a signal over those ports.

Also, on the Onkyo site I noticed this for the 575:

"HDMI Pass Through (2in/1out , 1080P compatible) — A separate audio connection is necessary"

I'm not sure what this means, but it seems to me that if you use the HDMI for 1080p it will not use the audio on the HDMI pass. This would be a major problem, someone please tell me that I can use the HDMI for video AND audio.

Is there anything else on the way that has comparible features for the same price ballpark? I'm still on the fence about preordering it with no reviews, but I would hate to have to pay $500 vs $400 right now.

I'm not sure yet. The 605 does not process 5.1 PCM into 7.1 (DPLIIx). While that's not a deal-breaker for me since I don't have 7.1, it makes me wonder what else it won't do with PCM. If things like speaker level and equalization adjustments, bass management, and speaker distances don't stick with PCM, I'm not getting it. While DTS-HD MA would be nice, I am still confident that one of these months the PS3 is going to get the capability to decode it.

WeApOn

Gotcha. DPLIIx is a big thing for me, along with anything else involving 7.1. So that is a deal breaker for me right there. Thanks!

I donn't think I saw anyone answer the pass through question. That basically means that this thing is just a 1.3a switch. Its not touching the audio or video. Its just taking it in and putting it back out.
