View Full Version : PS3 looks "grainy" compared to my 360...
Saleen4971 04-12-07, 12:28 AM both using 1080i on the same TV, being switched through the same receiver, using component cables and optical audio. the PS3 cables honestly look/feel higher quality than the XBOX cables, but watching the trailer for 300 on the xbox looks MUCH better. the PS3 seems"grainy" and kinda of splotchy almost? i mean it looks good, but not as good as it does on my 360.
what gives? i set it for 1080i thru component and optical audio so i know its set correctly. the games (oblivion and resistance) look amazing - arguably on par or better than GOW, but this trailer isnt alone. the trailer for casino royale isn't as bad as 300, but it definately has the same issues.
Slacker George 04-12-07, 12:36 AM Are you talking about the trailers on the PSN? I thought the 300 trailer was pretty grainy as well. And the Casino Royale trailer wasn't very impressive. I think it's just the quality of the videos. The Blu-Ray of Casino Royale looks fantastic.
Saleen4971 04-12-07, 12:44 AM ok good. as long as its jsut a crappy video.
yeah teh PSN ones i was referring to. i havent yet played any DVD"s or blu-rays. all i ahve are 3 HD DVD"s and a slew of standard DVD's that i ahve already seen

300 had grain added to the movie, thats what you are seeing. as for casino royale and the trailers, these are highly compressed videos. watch the blu-ray version of casino royale and you will know what quality looks like...............its not a difference between the 360 and ps3, i just has to do with the trailers you are viewing. also, i would recommend calibrating your set as this will help considerably with problems like this. the casino royale trailer, while nearly as good as the blu-ray version, doesnt suffer from any grain problems on my 1080p bravia...............
Dave Mack 04-12-07, 04:29 AM Have you SEEN 300 the film itself?!?! One of the grainiest (even though added) films I've ever seen. The PS3 trailer actually looks LESS grainy than the film in the theaters did!
Saleen4971 04-12-07, 10:37 AM i have seen 300 twice. i never noticed any grainy-ness in the movies, since they are always have a bit of it. but the 360 trailer looks 10 times better than the one on my ps3.
Sunkist 04-12-07, 10:44 AM I haven't even seen the trailer for 300 on the 360 marketplace and I was going through the trailer section last night. Some trailers on PSN seem to be grainy but none of the movies or games I have played are, 300 was very grainy in theater and most reviews I have read mention it as well. Can't wait for it on Blu-ray though!
Almost every Blu Ray ive seen has a ton of grain and honestly look like $hit. My gf, and everyone Ive tried to convince that blu ray was cool all said that blu ray looks like poop, and would rather watch the movie in dvd.

Doesn't that depend on the movie and not the PS3?
I heard Fifth Element wasn't a very good conversion. I considered buying Stargate on Blu-Ray, but haven't seen or heard of any reviews on how the conversion was made.
I'm still considering Casino Royale on Blu-Ray though.

You must have a thick layer of sand that covers your cornea, because my blu ray movies look superb. Or your tv sux. Try upgrading.

nice one troll. people like this need to be banned.
the movie had grain added for visual effect. thats the end of it. if you see a trailer without grain then your not watching what you were intended too.

casino royale has the best visual quality i have ever seen. no grain whatsoever, except for the black and white beginnning (which it was suppose to).

How am I trolling, becuase I haven't enjoyed any of my blu rays so far.
Xombi,
I have the Mitsu 65732 1080p, im sure its not the Tv. Only movie ive seen w/ no grain is Crank and that does look good.
I have to agree with neemo6, I've been rather underwhelmed at the quality of most of the Blu-Ray movies I've seen up till now. To date I've watched around 15 BR movies on my Uncle's PS3 and I own 18 HD-DVD movies that I watch with my 360 add-on. And thus far I would say that in terms of the overall quality of the HD transfers, Toshiba's disc is performing better at the moment.
I've only seen one truly bad HD-DVD transfer and that is on Spartacus (a true shame, because the cinematography is so good). But outside of Crank and CG animated films (Ice Age, etc...) I've yet to see a BR transfer that meets or exceeds HD-DVD. Superman Returns was especially heinous, so much so, that the SD-DVD looked almost as good. Although for audio fidelity I find both to be equally good on the whole.
While I've been impressed with the PS3 as an overall package (so much, that I plan on picking one up before the end of the month), I must say that Blu-Ray hasn't blown my hair back as a movie format. I'll continue to back HD-DVD as a film format until Blu-Ray can consistently have equal or better picture quality than it's competitor.
Of course my family has a history of backing the losers in format wars. From our embrace of Betamax (the sound was so much better than standard VHS, I still own quite a few), to my love of the Dreamcast, we almost always wind up with the first one that's forced into retiring from the field.
Sunkist 04-12-07, 01:42 PM Have you watched Kingdom of Heaven or Casino Royale? I have only watched a few Blu-ray movies on my Mitsu 57731 but they were not gainy (except Casino Royale in the beginning).

You are in the minority. Bluray and HD-DVD video playback is about the same in quality. If it is crappy looking to you, then it is your TV or HDMI cable.
Bluray has beat and will beat to death HD-DVD...its only a matter or time.
patsrockon 04-12-07, 02:19 PM King Kong in HD-DVD, The Descent in BR. Own both, people wow on both! ;)

I think the problem is that most of your friends are used to watching movies on DVD, which in a lot of cases tend to filter out the film grain that exists in the original print.
With HD-DVD/Blu-Ray we get a much more accurate transfer of the original film stock, which includes the grain that is inherent to film.
So the issue isn't with the technology, but with peoples misguided expectations that all HD movies will be crystal clear and grain free.

Those are probably two of the worst conversions. Don't buy Stargate, they did a crappy job for the dark scenes. Other movies like Casino Royale look fantastic.

Thanks for the heads up on that. How's Kingdom of Heaven?
I thought there was a post that recommended places to buy Blu-Ray, but I can't seem to find the post anywhere.
I still have my $10 off coupons that came with my PS3. Just been waiting for a movie to buy that I didn't already have on DVD.

2nd sticky has the tier system. Keep in mind people don't always agree. KOH is supposed to look great but I never checked it out as I recently viewed it on DVD.

Stargate is really the only purchase I'm dissappointed with. Granted it still looks better and sounds better than the DVD release but not what I was hoping for. I have like 20 blu-rays so not a vast collection like some.
In some of the more craptastic HD and BR transfers (see Spartacus and to a lesser extant Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on HD, Superman Returns on BR) I've seen it's not the fact that grain that was filtered out for SD-DVD transfer was reinserted (whether said grain is from an artistic florish of the director, or from poor care of the print itself), but rather that the picture was just bad. I've had my WS55-513 calibrated by an ISF trained and certified technician, so I know that my TV is not the cause of things.
Some of the problems I've noticed in transfers (on both formats) is exagerated picture softness that wasn't in previous formats or in theaters (see Superman Returns) as well as less than stellar color depth and contrast (Willy Wonka on HD-DVD looks damn near faded like a pair of acid washed jeans), along with artifacing and lack of sharpness and detail (Spartacus on HD is especially bad with it's color saturation, or lack thereof, as well as sharpness compared to the restored SD-DVD edition, it looks slightly better, but certainly not near paying 30 bucks to own it again, I'm glad I rented it rather than bought it).
It's understandable on older prints, that there is only so much one can do to bring it up to par with newer releases, but I have just as many issues on newer movies' (Underworld Evolution is another BR whose transfer I had problems with) transfer qualities as older films. On stuff that's come out in the past 5 years of so, I use my theatrical viewing experience (there are several purely digital theaters in my area) as a baseline, and to me neither format is where I would ultimately want it from a quality standpoint (to warrent continuing to pay 10-20 bucks more per film, compared to SD-DVD prices), but both are making progress.
briankmonkey 04-12-07, 02:48 PM I really like Superman Returns, sure not the best ever but it looked great to me when viewed on a 1080p SXRD and 720p Vizio Plazma. I did not see it in the theater for a comparison. Same with Underworld:Evolution, which I thought looked even better.

Thanks, I looked in the Blu-Ray section, but I guess I didn't bother to look in that particular thread.
Maybe I'll wait on using those coupons until there's a decent sale. I think those coupons are good until June? Or, was it May....
Dave Mack 04-12-07, 03:50 PM The Ps3 does not "add grain" to the films.
Identical transfers look, well, identical on the two formats. This has been confirmed many times by owners of both formats. You can blame the specific transfer and some think codec but the PS3 does not "add grain"...
