Hi, I just purchased my ps3 and trying to fine tune everything,i stumbled onto a quistion that i cant answer. what is the audio output setting should i use if i have my ps3 running thru the Panasonic SC-HT740 home theater?
this is the manufacture details on the home theater.

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=97090&catGroupId=24990&modelNo=SC-HT740&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&surfModel=SC-HT740

here are the choices i have to set the output that are on the ps3, btw i do have hdmi going from the ps3 to the tv and using audio out on the tv to the hometheater.

dolby digital 5.1
dts 5.1
aaa<--- dont know what that is
2 channel ones with differnt khz <--- doesnt make sense to use this since im going thru 5.1 home theater

linear pcm 5.1 44.1khz
linear pcm 5.1 88.2khz
linear pcm 5.1 176.4khz
linear pcm 5.1 48khz
linear pcm 5.1 96khz
linear pcm 5.1 192khz

then some other 7.1 outputs that i cant use since i dont have a 7.1 system.

i was just gonna check mark all the 5.1's but as i was gonna accept, it said, "if i picked the wrong one it could ruin the home theater speakers". so if anyone can help plz do, i dont wanna mess this setting up.

If you have HDMI going from the ps3 to the TV then Your audio from the Tv going to the AVR it doesnt matter what the PS3 sends. Your Tv is most likely going to take whatever comes in via HDMI (5.1 7.1 DTS DD..doesnt matter) and down sample it to 2CH and send that to your Panasonic. The Pani will then try to matrix that sound back into 5.1 via PL II.
Is this an Optical out on the Tv?

Thats 2ch stereo. Your Panasonic will try to process that back into 5.1. Since it has PL II..it should be able to do it. So like I said it doesnt matter what you pick for your audio setting on the PS3.. It will all get stripped back down to 2ch from the TV

Hi, I just purchased my ps3 and trying to fine tune everything,i stumbled onto a quistion that i cant answer. what is the audio output setting should i use if i have my ps3 running thru the Panasonic SC-HT740 home theater? Sounds like you're trying to hear the audio from the TV as well as getting it amplified through the HTiB.

All of these choices are TV dependent. If your TV can decode the Dolby Digital and DTS signal, use that. Most TVs can't decode DTS at least.

AAC (not aaa) is audio encoded using MPEG-4. If you've used iTunes, that's how your CDs are ripped using the original setting.

Most TVs using HDMI accept 2 channel.

BASICALLY, let the PS3 figure it out. Under Sound Setting -> HDMI -> Automatic.

linear pcm 5.1 44.1khz
linear pcm 5.1 88.2khz
linear pcm 5.1 176.4khz

None of these qualify using your setup since what you're doing is feeding the TV with audio and video via HDMI then you feed your HTiB using the stereo RCA cables (yes, those RED + WHITE connectors). So the most you're getting is stereo converted into fake 5.1 using Dolby ProLogic.

If you want better audio from your PS3, you need to upgrade your surround system.

Good luck with that one! Seriously, that is a difficult question for anyone to answer since it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Since this is the Playstation forum, I'd suggest that you go to one of the other forums for more general suggestions. (and I'm sure you will see/get alot of them...)

As to the PS3, in addition to what you've already seen above, I'll suggest that you keep some simple things in mind. With the HDMI cable connected between the PS3 --> TV you get 2 Channel Sound from the TV speakers. It sounds like you can connect the Audio cables (L/R) to your HTIB from the TV and get the same 2 Channel Stereo signal played through it. No settings, etc.. will get you anything better, i.e.. No 5.1 anything is possible with your current hardware

Still you might want to enjoy your setup for a while and see what you like or don't like, and then you can look into upgrades. Perhaps you will decide that 2 channel stereo is good enough for now...

1000 bucks...thats tough.. a good HDMI audio Reciever will cost you AT LEAST 400. 600 bucks for speakers.. 5.1 is really tough to do unless you buy one of those 5.1 speaker packages...and I wouldnt calll those "good" speakers
