View Full Version : RS-1 - Lets talk about gamma setting
rdalcanto 04-12-07, 02:25 PM Too much other stuff in the calibration thread.
What gamma setting are you using?
I found that color saturation was more neutral with gamma C. (Faces don't look sunburned).
Can anyone explain how gamma effects color? Is it possible that JVC chose a different color response with that gamma setting?
Perhaps folks should comment on their theater. I have light colored walls, white ceiling but a black sheet above the screen that extends out about 6 feet. Optima Grey wolf screen, 106inch.
Catdaddy67 04-12-07, 03:03 PM Hey Rick,
Replied to your PM!
I use Gamma C, coupled with a -3 brightness adjustment. I love the additional detail, and POP, that Gamma C appears to give my images. Although by itself it does elevate black levels some, and makes film grain more visible in the darkest of scenes, those two additional elements are tamed down, mitigated, reduced by the -3 brightness adjustment.
I find that with the -3 adjustment, gamma c looks the best of all the gamma settings for me.
My room is light controlled, with flat dark blue walls, carpets, ceilings, and curtains.

Tony
I using gamma c and my brightness is set at =10 i tone it down to that low cause i watch a lot of hockey and it seems to be the right setting. my screen is a 133 dalite hp. itgives the pciture sharpness and detail. my walls are light colored and my ceiling is white but i still get an amazing picture in hi def.
Catdaddy67 04-12-07, 03:54 PM 110" Vutec Matte White is my screen right now. 8) By early next month Ill have muy 128" Carada BW/Panamorph UH380 setup.
I prefer gamma B, but I do still have some light-colored walls. I'm working on darkening them and it will be interesting to see how that affects gamma.
Rob Tomlin 04-12-07, 08:40 PM Normal for me, fully light controlled HT with dark walls/ceiling.
rdalcanto 04-13-07, 12:45 AM O.k., I used HCFR and my Spyder 2 and discovered some interesting things. With the Spyder aimed at the projector, the grey scale was perfect on Gamma Normal. Facing my Optima Greywolf, I had accessive blue coming back. I went to User1 and quickly got a perfect greyscale on Gamma Normal facing the screen, with RGB levels of 99-100 across every IRE, and the Delta E was 0 or 1 from 40IRE to 100 (the Spyder is no good below 40). I put on some high def programming, and had the lobster faces again. Switched to Gamma C, and everything looked good. Checked the greyscale after the switch to Gamma C, and there was a big change. RBG levels for R/G/B were 93%,101,107% at 40IRE; 93, 101, 106 at 50 IRE; 94, 100, 106 at 60; 95, 100, 105 at 70; 96,100, 104 at 80; 96,100, 104 at 90, and 97,100, 103% at 100IRE, with Delta E of, 8,7,7,6,5,4,and 4. Average color temp also increased closer to 7K.
So switching to Gamma C reduces red in the greyscale, and makes the colors much more pleasant. I don't agree with people that say greyscale doesn't affect saturation. That is like saying painting red watercolors on white paper or pink paper will look the same.
Anyway, I think I can live with the image on Gamma C (which also reduced average gamma from around 2.12 down to 1.95.
I will play with the greyscale more tomorrow, and get it perfect at Gamma C. I expect to see lobster faces again, and anticipate switching the greyscale back to where it is now.
Rick
Bob Sorel 04-13-07, 10:27 AM You forgot one important choice in your poll - "other" :)
I use the normal gamma on the projector simply as a baseline, but use various other gamma curves from the Crystalio 2 depending on the type of material I am watching at the time.

Rob Tomlin 04-13-07, 11:41 AM Bob, your new sig line is hilarious! :D
Normal for me, fully light controlled HT with dark walls/ceiling.
Ditto.
Mark Petersen 04-14-07, 02:52 AM I'd also like an "other" addition to the poll.
With bright material I reduce the gamma setting on my VP by 10-20% which raises display gamma and then I use Gamma A setting to recapture some of the shadow detail that is lost.
With dark material I don't modify the gamma setting on my VP and I use Gamma Normal on the RS-1 (and sometimes Gamma A if I feel lazy).
millerwill 04-14-07, 12:58 PM Mark, In a similar vein, I like gamma B better for HDTV, but 'Normal' (or is it 'Natural', can't keep these straight!) better for dvd's (both connected via HDMI).
