To those members who have soffits in their HT and painted the ceiling black, what color do you paint the bottom face of your soffits ?
The same color as the walls ?
What about where the soffit runs in front of the screen wall ? Black there ?
Just wondering. This weekend I start painting. :D

I considered painting it the wall color which is Orchid, very like the color here on this forum page, but in the end I painted the entire soffit black to match the ceiling and I am glad I did it looks very good this way, I think the other would have looked strange.

Why not just paint one soffit bottom the wall color, then if you don't like it, the black should cover it easy enough.

Ceilings black. Soffits dark red to match walls.

Steve,
That's an awesome looking theater. My walls will be a shade of red - called fire brick, so it will be more towared the muted, earth-tones shade. I think when the lights go down, it will be very dark and may appear to be nearly indistinguishable from the ceiling. At the very least, I may paint the part of the soffit across the screen wall black.

Thanks for the compliment.

The ceiling is flat "Black Suede", and the walls (without fabric) and soffits are eggshell "Chianti". It's a deep enough red that indeed, when the lights are down it all appears black. Especially with the rope-lights in the light trays "backlighting" the soffits.

I did paint the soffit right above the screen with flat Chainti, however, specifically to minimize reflections there.

shouldnt the bottom of the soffit be open and then covered in craft paper then GOM??

edit: but if you already have the soffit built and dry-walled and don't want to rip it down, I would paint it the same color as the ceiling.

I went with black also.... Then again my whloe theater is black. Like padd54 said, you can always paint black over it if you want to change it.

I chose to match the sofit bottom to the ceiling color.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m98/erandmckay/4-4-07EntryandReturnDuctLastCoat.jpgI don't want to be insulting in any way, but better you hear it over the internet, cause a friend may not have the heart to say it.....this combo looks odd.
Either paint it the wall color, or ceiling color, don't break it up.

You're right, it does look terrible, thank goodness it doesn't really look like that in person. The blue hasn't yet to look right with this camera, oh well, it could be worse, the room could really look like that.

I like the advice offered above suggesting you paint the soffit the wall color and see if you like it. When I painted, I tried it a few ways; all burgundy, all black, and a combination with the face burgundy and the underside black, then I made my decision (with a lot of input from friends, family and decorator).

Good luck!

Stu

P.S. I went with the combination which was in my opinion clearly the best look.

"shouldnt the bottom of the soffit be open and then covered in craft paper then GOM??"

Not particularly, One of the reasons to have soffits is to run things through them, wires, conduit, in some cases actual AC. in some applications you run whatever then stuff with insulation around those items. but the soffit is solid.

why cant you do that with GOM? run conduit and the ac is wrapped in linacoustic then filled with cotton. isnt one of the giant opportunities of a soffit, to use it as an acoustic application besides just looks?? Then DD on the wall and ceiling around it for the soundproofing side of it.
