Ok...noobish question, but Direct tv just came to hookup my stuff today and i need to figure out how to hook everythign up for a nice optimal surround system, etc.

The sound from your DTV receiver likely needs to go to the Onkyo. Does the DTV box have optical out? If so, hook that into an optical in on your Onkyo (assuming you already have surround set up on that, and it can do the decoding).
