I've noticed that certain HD Dvd titles seem to be recorded at lower levels than what I'm used to on SD DVDs and Blu Ray. I'n some cases I've had to turn my Marantz SR 9300 up as much as 10 decibles higher to obtain a normal listening level.
On two recently veiwed HD DVDs....The Matador and Out Of Sight, the movie started out at a normal vloume level but about 15 minutes into each film the sound level dropped dramatically. Once I turned the volume up (about 8 decibles) both movies sounded fine.
Anyone else experience this?

I haven't tried either of those movies. The only one I have with audio issues is The Phantom of the Opera. It, along with some others, are known to be at least 10 db quieter than normal. The low volume level is consistent throughout, however.

I have had a problem with very low audio volume on virtually every HD DVD title I own. I recall a particularly severe problem with Slevin.

I've noticed that I have to turn my Pioneer AVR's volume control about 8db higher with HD-DVDs (vs. the SD-DVDs). But that lower volume output from each HD-DVD has been consistent throughout the HD-DVD. No dropping or changing.

Say... to you have the Dynamic Audio Range Compression feature turned on in your player? That might account for it?

Do you have a HD DVD addon? Therein lies the problem.

No, every so often this problem exists even with HDMI. I suspect this is something that requires a firmware fix.

No, I have an XA1.

I agree with this. For my Denon 2807, regular DVDs/HD broadcasts are around -25. HD-DVDs are -15 and I still have problems with dialog, although I'll blame that on my center which needs replacing.
