Eh... I would think that you may have better luck with standard DVDs since compatible tools are likely better established. There would be absolutely no picture quality difference once the original media is compressed down to an iPod compatible resolution. There is no 1080P on an iPod screen ;)

What if he doesn't own the movie on SD DVD and has no choice but to try to convert the HD DVD?

Stupid Non-Combo discs!

I think the external USB HD-DVD drive would defeat the benefit of the iPod's portability. :D

Well with dvd theirs a program called pincale media converter. Best Buy sells it for $29. I use it for dvds and it works very well.
Go to the website www.dvdrhelp.com they have a lot of guides for backing of media and converting it to other formats. I think they've got one for HDDVD. I'm not sure if theirs a way to go from HDDVD files to DVD then to ipod...

Hmmmm I dont think the OP was asking REALLY about HD DVD but rather HD movies, rally though with the resolution of the ipod wouldnt it defeat the purpose of the HD Movie to watch it on the IPOD?? The resolution doesnt need to be high to get a great picture from one of those 2.5 inch screens........

EDIT: ok seeing as the OP only has 2 posts and the other post was "HD DVD drives me creazy" I am wondering if this is a vaslid question....OP please elaborate on waht you want do you want an HD movie on your IPOD or jsut an HD movie....I think in the end it is pointless for both, I would reccomend jsut downloading off of itunes and you will get good quality for the device you have.

ipod max resolution 320 x 240. That's not even SD quality.

On a screen that small you wouldn't even be able to see any difference between HD or SD.

Hi, the OP's post is "How to watch HD DVD Movie on iPod"? So he probably want HD movie on ipod. His another posts is "HD DVD drives me creazy". Their might be some connection. Think, you guys, suppose the OP want to watch HD movie on ipod but have trouble put them on ipod. I think we shall recommend him a dvd converter or rip which can transfer HD DVDs to iPod. Then he can try xilisoft dvd to ipod converter.

I hate to borrow movies from itunes. If i watch movies, I just convert dvds to ipod using my dvd to ipod converter. $29=many movies.

The point we are making is that it would be a waste of money for the OP to do this period......THe screen resolution would not take advantage of it and they might was well have the DVD to convert it......Plus as stated it would be easier to do with a DVD period.....its fine if you want to watch movies on the IPOD, but really without owning the HD DVDs what they are asking is not legal........you say $29=many movies but that is really only 1 HD DVD......We have still as yet to hear back from the OP so I would think this is a dead topic as the OP has moved on.......

There are free programs out there that convert it to the proper .mp4 format. Since I already own the DVD, i don't think i should have to pay for the software lol

There are a few HD podcasts available, but I'm guessing you'd get full 720p playback in Quicktime only.

720P on a 320 x 240 resolution lcd.........

Sounds like a brilliant use of space!!

Fine I'll play devils advocate. I can think of one use for this. I am interested in making HD-DVD's for the family videos. Don't also plan on putting them on DVD. Soo.... it would be fun to have these also in the portable ipod version. For those planning on only purchasing HD-DVDs in the future it may also be nice to have a version on their ipod. Not about the resolution, but just being able to watch the movie

Wow, I think we've stumbled on the sole benefit of combo discs.

The iPod isn't even SD. It's LD (low definition).

"Now if you're playing the movie on a telephone or on your computer, you will never in a trillion years experience the film. You'll think you have experienced it, but you'll be cheated. It will be a weak...you'll be experiencing weakness, an extreme putrefication of a potential experience in another world. So don't let your friends or some television advertisement trick you into accepting weakness. It's such a sadness. Power in that world is critical. Everything has been worked on to be a certain way and if you don't have a set-up for your films, it's a joke, it's just the most sickening, horrifying joke. And this world is so troubled, and it's such sadness that you think you've seen a film on your f**king telephone. Get real." - David Lynch

Also, it's called iTunes....

How to watch HD DVD Movie on iPod? Yer kidding, right? :)

OK, flip over to the DVD side and recode for half the resolution, using off the shelf DVD-Shrinker-type program.

Copy it to iPod with iTunes.

Get magnifying glass and "ear buds".

En avant!

It would be cool if they created an iPOD HD with a bigger screen! :)

Isn't that like listening to 5.1 on a bluetooth headset? ;)

I guess that's one benefit of combo discs. You can use the DVD side to downsample to your ipod or PSP.

The screen would have to be pretty big to see the benifit of HD. Even at a veiwing distance of a few inches.
At this point it would defeat the idea of an ipod. As it would lose its portiblity.

Prehapps a model that had HDMI out and could output HD. But would down sample for the ipods screen. Id think this would take a lot of power to do. The movie might take up some space. But the new 160GB would be good as you could get a few on their.

I like to watch movie commentaries on my iPod, but never a movie for the first time.

While an ipod screen is far from HD capable, there is a legitimate issue to be discussed here.

I often take DVDs and transfer a few TV episodes and a handful of movies to my ipod to watch when I’m “on the go.” But just how would one go about doing this with an HD-DVD, or even a Blu-ray disc? I was actually pondering this just the other day, and thinking that I should put the Earth, Wind & Fire/Chicago Concert DVD on my ipod; only to suddenly remember that I own an HD-DVD.

As I understand it, there is no easy way to currently do this, and I wonder if, much like DVD, software will eventually be developed that when used in conjunction with an HD-DVD drive would allow one to transfer video from an HD-DVD to an ipod.

Quite frankly, I would think that this would (eventually) be more likely to be possible with HD-DVD than with Blu-ray.

Apple had been petitioning the Blu-ray studios to include an iPod version of the movie as an extra on the disc. Nothing has come to fruition, but it wasn't a bad idea.

The Touch is fantastic. The video quality is miles above the 5th Gen. I am having a blast with my Touch.

The problem is that if you own the HD-DVD you probably don't own the DVD.

If I have the HD-DVD, I'd love for a way to get an MP4 rip of the movie to watch while on the treadmill or elliptical at the gym.

I can't wait until the new ipod touch's have a much larger drive space. With music, podcasts, and movies the touch really needs more breathing room. I really like my last gen 80GB ipod and the space it has, once these touch models get close to the 80GB range I will purchase a new ipod.

I've got some HD DVDs and Blu-Rays that I'd love to put on my ipod too as I travel a lot, all I can think of for the time being is netflixing these on DVD.
