I have SO much noise from my Cablevision box! Its really ruining the whole HDTV experience. If I shut off my reciever which i use as a prepro, i have silence. My DVD player brings a bit of hiss. The cable box brings a significant HUM! I've grounded my pre directly to the load center. The cable box is now grounded to an outlet on the same leg side as everything else.
ANY IDEAS???

Yeah, bring it back to your local Cablevision office for a replacement.
I had the SA4200HD, it was silent. As a matter of fact, exchange it for the SA8300HD DVR. For the extra $10/month... you'll be thanking me next week! :D

No, my 4200HD was good... good audio and good video- no complaints about either. Only exchanged it for the DVR feature of the SA8300HD.

Well, the 4200HD had no moving parts, so no noise ever from it. The only external noise from the 8300HD is when it's actually turned on (ie- you're watching a channel through it) or when it's turned off and it's passively recording something you've scheduled. When turned off, except as noted above, the hard drive spins down- so the DVR is completely silent at that point. When in use, you can hear the hard drive spinning, but it's not too bad, it's a standard computer hard drive- bit it's the only moving component in the DVR- so no fan noise. Overall I'm quite happy with it, I like the fact that the hard drive spins down when not in use- I like my HT room quiet.

Is it only an audio hum? ( no video degragation, lines running through it etc.)
You mentioned a hiss from the DVD player but no hum!
Check your cables from the STB to the receiver, wiggle, reseat them, pull one then the other listen for any changes.
