View Full Version : Where'd the picture go on my Zenith 851x?
Binnkin 04-13-07, 03:06 PM Hello all, i got myself a random problem with my 80lbs paper weight projector, a Zenith 851x. It has been working fine for the past several months, but now for some reason i can get sound, but i have no picture. There isnt any light coming out of any of the 3 lenses. I appreciate anyones help, thankyou.

Sound?
there shouldnt be any sound from a PJ? Well, the fans thats about it
Does that projector have built in speakers? like an old SONY 1031Q and some old Panasonic units?
I used to rip the speakers and audio board out of my 1031Q's.
Curt Palme 04-14-07, 04:09 PM You've got a problem in it.
:)
Most likely you have no HV, but that could be due to many issues in the set. Do you have a voltmeter? You'll need it to check some stuff that I'll tell you to do. Also check to see if the focus block is original. If it is, that is most likely the bad part, but at an average age of 12-14 years, it could be other stuff as well.
Check out my site below, the tips section has a bunch of 851 info.
Binnkin 04-18-07, 02:39 PM I appreciate the help and i'll be sure to check out your site. I do not have a voltmeter reader nor do i know how to use one :) I do believe that it is still equiped with the original focus block, but im not sure if there is a way to check and see if its bad.
Curt Palme 04-18-07, 02:54 PM Sorry, but no, short of replacing it at $250, there isn't. This is a set that is not conducive to non technically minded end user service. Where are you located? Perhaps someone herecan assist. Otherwise all I can offer is that you send me a few boards out of the set to check and repair.
With no internal diagnostic lights or indicators, it will be a crapshoot, but I've sold and serviced literally 100s of these..

leon0909 04-19-07, 03:38 AM Excellent work. Easy to understand.
Binnkin 04-19-07, 06:18 PM Right now i am located in Bowling Green Ohio. May 7th ill be venturing to Akron OH and will be staying there until mid August.
Curt Palme 04-19-07, 08:19 PM You might want to update your profile.
Call around the Zenith dealers, you might find an old timer that's willing to work on this set, but at this point most of the CRT diagnosing/repairs are a do it yourself thing.
If you do have the old focus block, the first step is to replace it, any of the Zenith techs would tell you that, I've got any other board you might need. But for the price, you should probably upgrade to an HD ready CRT like the Sony 12XX series for not too much more money.
Binnkin 04-23-07, 07:23 PM I might do that. Do you have any idea where i might be able to get a couple bucks for this Zenith or even how much? Thanks again for all the help, i might take look around and see if i can find someone.
Curt Palme 04-23-07, 10:53 PM THe Zeniths in working shape are selling for $50-100 at this point. They're not HD ready, so no one really wants them. IN defective shape they're worth even less, sorry!
Binnkin 04-24-07, 12:32 PM Thanks much
