Hello!
I just picked up a Canon HV20... and I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for the best capture utility (either mac or pc, I have both) that can be used to capture video from it?

also is there different software that's better for 1080i mode vs. 24p mode?

thanks!
-Josh

Not sure if its in the budget or if you want to tackle such a robust app... but my vote is for Final Cut Studio. This should accommodate all your needs (from capture -> edit -> output).

I posted my workflow in another post:

There are LOTS of options out there and it will depend COMPLETELY on your budget and your computer.

Generally speaking Avid Liquid or Sony Vegas7 are probably the best for working with HDV (on a pc anyway). Liquid was the first to introduce HD editing in the native format. But it's a fairly complex program and requires a bit of study. Sony Vegas 7 is by far the most stable editor that I have worked with. These programs are in the 500 or 600 dollar range and there are cheaper or more expensive, depending on which way you want to go.

Hi flyingscott I have a question about Final cut studio if you may.
Can I use Final cut studio on a Window PC base? I know it is an Apple thing but can I do it. Thank you in advance.

baipai,

No, Final Cut is Mac only... but you can run windows (if you must) on Intel based macs.

So go buy a Mac!

The only HD output from HV20 is 1080@60i thru firewire. 24p only becomes an issue if you are editing. Since its digital if you manage to capture it once for twenty minutes for so without any dropout or pixelation then the software and PC are perfectly fine for the task (of capturing). There are several kinds of free software that allow you to capture HDV at 1080@60i from HV20, CapDVHS and HDVsplit come to mind. If your purpose is just to caputre the HD video from HV20 to PC then you don't have to spend a penny. Simply download the freeware and you are ready to go in a minute.

hdvsplit is great for the initial capture,
I really want to use 24p, so it looks like I need some sort of pulldown solution.
I can't wait for the apps to start really supporting 24p workflow

anyone try cineform?

Cineform works well... just tick off the pull down removal checkbox and away you go. A little pricey, but it's probably the easiest way that I have seen anyway, in dealing with the 24p
