View Full Version : RE4 on PS3: Does this look right???
I never played Resident Evil 4, so I was wondering if its normal to see black bars on all 4 sides for this game? I pressed triangle-x buttons before the Capcom logo and I selected progressive option, but instead here's what I'm seeing on my Samsung LCD:

Does that look right? I thought RE4 was Widescreen 480p? Why the black bars on top and bottom? I understand the bars on the sides are normal, because of underscan for PS2 games...but I don't know why I'm getting bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Seems odd, no?
RE4 is letterboxed both on PS2 and Gamecube. It doesn't run full 480P. With all the effects they jammed into the game they had to literally letterbox it to get it to run. Even then the frame rate was wonky.
Slacker George 04-14-07, 12:52 AM The PS2 version is supposed to have a true widescreen mode instead of just letterboxed like the Gamecube. Make sure your TV is set to the right aspect ratio, the HUD on your screenshot looks kind of squished.
Sofdec7 04-14-07, 04:41 AM I just put my copy in and it does default to the way you showed in your image.
Hit select (in game) and select "Widescreen: ON" to fix this.
Unfortunately, I still do have some "black bars" on the left/right (about 3/4" on each side, on a 50" screen, and about 1/2" on top), but this may be related to the way my TV is set up.

Thanks, I'll try this later today. I really don't mind the small black bars on the side, as I already found out that has to do with PS2 games having an 'underscan' flag for all games. Apparently, the game developers do this 'underscan' in order to improve framerate on the PS2.

That is correct. Plus if you display has a zoom or fill feature, you can pretty much eliminate the black bars.
I played RE4 for the first time on the PS3 and really loved it.
Well I just tried it and it now fills the top and bottom fully.
The sides still have a small amount of black bars, but I'm used to it ever since playing GoW 1 & 2.
By the way, for those curious, I highly recommend getting RE4 for play on your PS3. It may look dated by today's standards (ie. Resistance, Motorstorm), but its really fun to play. Especially at night with the lights off...
Thanks all.

Giant Robot 04-14-07, 08:14 PM RE4 Wii edition will now support true 16:9....due out this summer.
make sure you play through the game multiple times and get the HANDCANNON

Eeek, the handcannon took me about two weeks to get! That mercenaries mode is definitely not for the feint of heart. I actually got nightmares it was so intense for me! :p Those bastard village Ganados never let up! And those two giant chainsaw Ganados!! H-o-l-y! I'm actually a little surprised that I finished all those bonus levels, actually. The handcannon was definitely not worth the risky blood pressure it gave me to get it! Ha. Now, the Chicago Typewriter = worth every last drop of blood and sweat!
Overall I'd rate the game one of the best off-line games I've ever played. Better than RFOM, even. Resistance on-line is pretty hard to beat, however.

freaking sweat! a couple of year old game redone again at 480p. Cranking out the hits =P. Capcom sure knows how to milk em
Fettastic 04-16-07, 11:03 AM Weird this is here. I just bought RE4 yesterday for my PS3. Yes, selecting widescreen makes it look better, but the image is still really screwy. It's got "spikey" effects all over the screen. I've only updated with the firmware that allows the remote controller to be assigned. I'm assuming later firmware fixes this issue?

But if you're running the game at 480p you shouldn't have that problem even with older firmware.

I don't know how to get into progressive mode, but my TV said it was 480p.
I'm downloading 1.6 now. Strangely, my PC says the update contains "information that may be lost" if I burn it to a CD. I'm putting it in UPDATE inside PS3 so that's not an issue. I'm wondering if I need to use some other CD burning software or else it won't work?
dbburns 04-16-07, 04:26 PM I thought this game looked pretty bad on the PS3 also. I just started playing it a couple of weekends ago (and only for one day), but I guess I have been spoiled by HD graphics, because these were painful to say the least.
Plus I found the controls a bit confusing. It seems I can't move forward when I try to knife people. I have to run up to them and then pull the knife and hope I am close enough to stab/slice them. Is this how it's done? Or am I missing something? Maybe I just kept pushing the wrong stick to move forward when I had the knife out. I'll try to play it again some more this weekend.

I read the book and figured out how to put it into progressive mode. BIG improvement. Much sharper. There's kind of a weird ripple effect now, like vertical stripes through the whole image, but hey, it's PS2.
The update worked perfectly as well, completely getting rid of the spikey effect.

I found a RE4 Hand Cannon video on youtube...

How hard is it to get this weapon?

How hard is it to get this weapon?Read my response a few posts up about the Hand Cannon! It was probably the most unnerving unlockable level I have ever encountered! It's a fun gun, but it was truly a test getting it. I actually much preferred using the Chicago Typewriter once I levelled it up to infinite ammo.
Fettastic 04-18-07, 11:27 AM I finally got past that first little town last night and played for a couple of hours.
It probably took me 8 tries to get past that town though. Wave after wave of zombies and limited ammo. That knife is practically useless too, especially with enemies with those long syches and pitchforks.
But now I feel a bit more comfortable with the controls (they sure were awkward at first) and getting into the game. I think I'm hooked which is so cool because I've really loved the other RE games. Sure was a long time between 3 and 4!
Has anyone played that Outbreak RE game? Is that one any good? There is also a sequel called "File 2". Should I pick these puppies up? They wouldn't be 16:9 would they?
While we're on the subject, is there a list anywhere of 16:9 PS2 titles?

That knife is practically useless too, especially with enemies with those long syches and pitchforks. It's funny you say that about the village and the knife, because a while back I dowloaded a video file of a guy going through that village scene using only his knife! And doing it pretty easy, by the look of it. He even took down the chainsaw guy!
And if you think the village scene is hard now...just wait until you get to the "mercenaries" levels to unlock the hand cannon!! Basically you get 5 characters to play with, and 4 levels. It's really just wave upon wave of enemies coming at you (and at least 2 bosses in each level), and you have to get a certain point total with each of the five characters in all 4 levels to unlock the hand cannon. There were MANY times when I thought I'd never in a million years even come close. Perseverance is the key. Or blind luck! :p

What? Kess has strayed from RFoM???? What is this world coming to? :D :p :D
What? Kess has strayed from RFoM???? What is this world coming to? :D :p :DIt's a part of my past I'd rather not think about. I barely came out of RE4 with all my sanity. I won't be happy until I lose every last bit of it.
It just so happens that RFoM is paving the way down that road rather nicely! :p
Supermans 04-18-07, 06:36 PM I have Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube and Ps2 as well as the most recent PC version (which has been fixed with a patch recently to give it all the bells and whistles that the consoles had for lighting) The PC version now is the best of the three since you can have AA and AF all the way to the max and the game looks "Next-Gen" in comparison. I'm sure the Wii version will add some AA, AF or both to make it look smoother and better since it is more powerful than the Gamecube as well. In any case the game is fun to play on any console. The Ps2 does have true widescreen support even though the framerate was better on the Gamecube.. The easiset way to get the hand cannon is to simply cheat and get it with the PC version :) But it is more fun and more satisfying to be able to know and say proudly you did it the hard way on the consoles...
