View Full Version : Blinking red light.
jbs2516 04-14-07, 01:33 AM I've had my ps3 for 5 days and love this amazing machine. However, when I try to turn it on from standby mode, the green light will appear for less than a second then turn into blinking red light. I have to turn off the main switch at the back of the machine and turn it on again then press the power on the front, then the machine will turn on properly.
I don't want to use the switch at the back all the time. Anyone has the same problem? Should I send it back to Sony?
Thanks.
Red Cell 04-14-07, 02:33 AM I'd take it back for a new one.
Run4two 11-11-08, 03:55 PM I've had mine for almost 2 years (60 gig) and my son was playing when it suddenly shut itself down with a blinking red light. I was able to press the on/off switch on the PS3 so that it turned off completely. I've tried to restart and it does for a couple of seconds then shuts down again. Any help is much appreciated.

Did you try connecting it to the Internet and downloading and installing the latest version? Maybe that might fix it. Worth a try anyway.

Your best bet is to call Sony. Mine did the same thing back on Oct. 24. It will cost you $149 to get a replacement unit. I got mine back last Friday.
bdwright77 11-11-08, 04:10 PM or try a reset. hold the power button down for about 10 seconds. You'll hear the first power on beep, then a succession of three beeps after that.

Not if it is only 5 days old
Run4two 11-11-08, 04:25 PM I've tried the reset. It wouldn't take. Any idea on what it might be. I'm hoping fan. I have so much stuff on this hard drive, I'd hate to lose it. Thanks to all.
TornadoTJ 11-11-08, 04:26 PM Maybe the store you bought it at will let you swap the drives, although I believe you'd be better off to back up the system and get an entirely new PS3 to restore to.

No good. Once you try and put the old drive into a different ps3, it will reformat it. Only way to get the information back is via a backup (of which, you cannot do if your system is already defunk)...

Your right. I'd take it back to the store to get a new one. Worse come to worse get a refurb from Sony.

Mine would not take either. I still would get the yellow light then the blinking red lights.
Protopet 11-11-08, 05:29 PM Try the 3 beep menu and see if one of those options will work.
Hold the power button upon start up until you hear a third beep.

Run4two 11-11-08, 07:36 PM A lot of misreading has taken place. My PS3 is an origial ( or shortly after 60 gig). I've had it for almost 2 years. I'm not about to return it to Target- 2 YEARS LATER!! It's not their fault! My family has gamed many hours on it. I'm just trying to find out what it might be. I'm hoping fan, but it might be hard drive, power supply, or circuit board. I'm just hoping that after 2+ years that others can give me the most likely cause as this is not anything new.

Actually, most of the posts are replying to the OP: I've had my ps3 for 5 days;)
ExAnim8r 11-11-08, 08:31 PM 5 days old? Direct exchange at the store! Most retail stores should give you at least 14 or 30 days for a refund anyway.
Watch what you tell the people at the store so they don't try to pin it on you. Protect yourself from getting screwed by lazy or sleezy retailers, it's their obligation to send the unit back to Sony for a replacement. Returns and customer service are the only reasons left to buy locally rather than buying cheaper online, so take full advantage of your consumer right.

I should have started a new thread. The OP was from April 2007. My apologies.
