View Full Version : Show Us Your Color Schemes

If you've been following my thread in the "General Home Theater & Media Rooms" forum you will see that, while I do have a ways to go before I actually start painting, I'm reaching the point where its time to start thinking of color schemes.

I've looked through tons of threads and have seen some really neat concepts, neat completed theaters and neat color schemes. By the time that I get to the most recent thread, I forget which of the previous threads was my favorite and what that color scheme actually was.

I'm creating this thread in hopes that people can post their finished, or near finished, basement photos - specifcally showing the color schemes. Perhaps list the material used (cloth, etc, if any) and the colors of the paints and/or materials. This way for anyone else trying to do the same research with color schemes... they will have one place to look quickly to compare!

Thanks for everyones help in advance!

<edit> The room is painted in three colors; tan, black, and red/brown. We used Behr Premium Plus pastel base from Home Depot. The finishes were eggshell for everything but the ceiling; which is flat.

Tan: Brown Teepee # 700D-4
Red: Toasted Chestnut # 240-F6
Black: Black Suede # S-H-790

Great idea.

I'm (hopefully) about 2 weeks away from finally painting. Thinking either dark slate blue walls/dark grey or black ceiling and screen wall or dark plum walls with the same dark grey/black for the ceiling and screen wall.

I'd love to see some different colour ideas.

Cheers,
Jay

Thanks! We hired a decorator to help with color schemes, as we wanted to get the room right. It was worth it. The pictures came out with more of a red tint than expected.

Here's one more shot showing the screen wall. I will build acoustically transparent doors over the mains, as well as include damping around them.

The wife and I kept going back and forth between fun and sophisticated and we kept coming back to fun. So, we decided to try to have a little fun, but with a little sophistication thrown in. I'm right at the fun part - the room is primed, paint goes on the walls over the next few days, and carpet comes Friday. So, we'll see how it all comes together in a few weeks when the chairs are moved in!

Really neat color selections. Its amazing what your finished projects look like. In the beginning I was thinking:
Bottom 4' of wall: Black GOM
Top half of wall: Grayish-blue
Soffits: Black?
Ceiling: Light blue

What do you guys think of that type of scheme? Then again, after seeing these awesome pictures, who knows what I'll end up with!

Au contraire!

As you'll note from my pic above, the proper light blue color, Milano Blue, for example, shifts nicely from blue to gray. It will give your ceiling the appearance of added height and a very nice atmosphere as the colors change in the dimming lights.

I LOVE the light blue ceiling, I guess you still get the good contrast with the black ceiling surround.
Do you have a light bar in the moulding, tough to tell from your site.
How are the sconces lighting on the screen ?
I'm debating sconces, but don't wnat to grey the blacks on screen.

CptnRandy
04-17-07, 03:01 PM
Plasma George,

The soffit does form a light tray - and there's light rope running inside it. The room has cans, the sconces, and rope lighting throughout (the soffit, around the screen in a blue tray, and along the steps). All are controlled by a dimmer - so different lighting for different effects. When watching a movie, all are dimmed all the way down (OFF), except for the rope lighting on the stairs - which is dimmed low.

So, no problem - the sconce lighting AND cans are only for pre and post show usage.

Thanks,

Randy

I used Ben Moore's Twilight Zone Black for the ceiling and front wall and B.M.'s Kensington Blue for the side walls. Its a blue grey that goes near black with the lights out. The carpet is charcoal gray as are the Berklines. I painted the crown and baseboard trim in a metallic charcoal gray and the sound panels are black.

Once you click on the link you can snoop about. I've got pictures from all phases of the build including the custom rack I built...

Man you guys make it hard for me to post up pics of my theater as in it just doesn't rank. :)

Black and Off White to Camel here. Space limited my equipment is under my screen which is black and silver including speakers, the surrounds match the front pretty well, but I hated the grills so I left them off the surrounds.

I took some ultra hi-rez pics once and they came out very bad. I have not gotten around to another attempt. I was going to use very casual settings this time around and just snap a million shots hope'n for a couple of decent shots out of it.

I'm always impressed with the shots people post, I can't even seem to get a decent screen shot ever.

My rooms theme would probably actually be called some thing like "insanity". the walls and cieling are all black rubber. Carpet is somewhat grey/silver, I think the color of the carpet was called cobweb. The furnishings are all camel / off white. The riser is unfinnished construction pine (2x4's) , the media rack is the same unfinnished construction pine right now as well.

We don't feel it's too dark for the intended usage of the space, which is media/gaming/bar/social.

I opted for quite a few can lights, primarily so I have even coverage and CAN go bright if need be, but we only do it for cleaning. The normal lighting modes on the controller have everything form 40-60% or so.

The carpet is black with gray "frost" mixed in. We think it's a good compliment for the room.

The dark colors really are great for improving the picture on the screen as well...

Carpet on the base floor is a pattern that shows and highlights all the colors in the theater. Carpet on the stage and the riser uses the same patterns but is black.

Highlights include antiqued gold trim, and walnut veneer on the columns, ceiling is the renowned "Milano Blue" as suggested by many of the HT gurus here.

Seats are all black Berklines in front, and a Burgundy with gray trim on the cinema seat in the back row.

Thanks! Incidentally, we opted to base our color them on playing cards, to match some art my wife found. (We like to play poker and pinochle...card table in the room yet to come). You can see the art (yet to be hung) in a couple of shots on the bottom rows of this page. (http://caesare.homeip.net/basement/index9.htm)

The The Suede black and Chianti res are both Behr brand paint colors. Bought them at good ol' Home Depot. I used a tinted gray primer under the red, and would recommend anybody else considering a red paint do the same.

The fabric I unfortunately don't have a name for. It's one my wife found at a local Hancock fabrics. Here's a couple of closer/brighter shots of it:

It all comes down to personal preference and aesthetics. In a perfect world black is the best color but for the extremely minimal effect it has on pq most people opt for a more friendly paint color.

Here's my original paint scheme before the redo.

Nice room?

With those colors, do you get the urge to eat breakfast in the room often? :)

Thanks Kevin!!! We have definitely been enjoying the room. I have it done for the most part in a week or so and then I had to leave on a business trip for 2 weeks. :( I am looking forward to getting back to the family and enjoying the HT room together. If the French Toast looks like my ceiling color then we are having overdone French toast! :D

My HT is a work in progress for sure, the paint and carpet were completed just last week...

The dark color is called "Dark Umber" and the light color is "Khaki Shade".
The cabinet by the bar is where my equipment will be housed, I have a cable run / pvc pipe running over the ceiling to the back of the room where my projector will be mounted. The screen will be about 96" and will take up the entire wall just to the left of the cabinet.

We are just underway the aesthetic planning stages of whats going to be a staggered stage theater that is going to wind up as a front projection room a few years down the road. The problem now is it is in a house that's 1200 miles away....so there's a lot of imagination in play with the space, scale and colors & textures.

We want something thats going to be very cave like and dark but with personality and without feeling cold and minimal which I feel the black leather furniture we have chosen tends to be.

So far we are working off an idea pulled from these playing cards:

http://i33.tinypic.com/am9s05.jpg

So basically black, white, gray. Underlying themes of mystery, magic, smoke and mirrors and a touch of occult and imagination. The main thing we want to achieve is an edgy fashionable look but not so much that it gets tacky or campy.

Fabric for the acoustic panels and antique Louis side chairs.

http://i35.tinypic.com/34g1slj.jpg

http://i35.tinypic.com/96kgbc.jpg

We just got the bolts of fabric in for the acoustic panels and in a large setting at a distance it looks more like a traditional toile until you get up close to it and see the details, which is very cool.

Rugs:
http://i33.tinypic.com/24l3nvb.jpg

Paint Chip:

http://i37.tinypic.com/2ikfrs8.jpg

All the trim work is going to be a satin black with gray antiquing.

In summing it up like this it seems a bit too goth and on the nose but I think with high quality furniture and smart, clean installation it will pull together and be edgy but smart.

Thanks for the comments. No wallpaper. It's from the suede collection at Sherwin Williams. I actually picked up another gallon tonight for touch-ups because (for whatever reason) they don't sell the suede paint in quarts.

There is a better product now that used plastic tracks. One such company is http://www.fabricmate.com. These plastic tracks would be a LOT easier then building wooden fabric frames.
