It's one of my fav's, so many scenic shots, the first one that really hits you is when the guy is bringing into town the "ponies" to give to skinny - amazing clarity, color and depth - I was skeptical about buying Unforgiven because the SD was one of the worst discs I owned, it looked "ok" on a bedroom 27" but on a 65" it looked like s#it...so like you, I was also blown away the first time I popped in the HD version (and way happy, as one of my favorite movies had gone from one extreme to the other :D).

Yes, it may not be the sharpest HD DVD but with so many outdoor shots it's one of the most beautiful discs I own.

I had the sd disk before I got into HD DVD last July. So it was one of the first HD DVDs I bought. And boy was I happy with it. Slaps the sd version silly.

The style doesn't lend itself to rave PQ reviews but its a solid 8/10 no doubt. The riding montage of the 3 assasins was a joy to behold - looked as if it was filmed yesterday

I have had this for quite awhile, but just got around to watching it a couple of days ago. Good picture quality and a very good movie.

Agreed, the PQ of this transfer was very good, it seems they took care of the original print.

Reminds me of when I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey on HDNet, it looked spectacular for it's age.

I just love the one liners in this movie PQ aside...... great movie.

"sir, you are a cowardly son of a batch! You just shot an unarmed man!"

"Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend"

Indeed, that is such a great line. One of my favorites.

I also like

"That's right. I've killed women and children. I killed just about anything that's walked at one time or another. And I'm her to kill you Little Bill."

Actually, you know, I just watched this one for the first time yesterday, and I wasn't overly impressed with the IQ. It could be just the way Eastwood shot it, I take that fully into consideration.

But in a few wide shots I think I actually saw some dust on the print/transfer (a first I've seen for HD DVD), in addition to most of the film looking pretty soft.

In fact, the last HD DVD I had seen before this was another western--- THE SEARCHERS. A film that has about 40 years on Unforgiven, which looked way sharper, and more "3D". Due to the newly remastered transfer no doubt, but still.

Either way, amazing film!

Somebody on another forum insists that Unforgiven has had it's grain filtered away. I never saw the film in the cinema but I've seen it on all home formats except VHS. Is there anything to this allegation? It seems like an unfounded allegation but I'm bored today and thought I'd ask.

I thought it looked beautiful compared to the sd dvd version. As I watched the movie I kept hoping that they will do Days of Thunder as well at some point. I can't hardly watch the sd version, it is so dark and just hard to watch.

I agree with all the other views on PQ. Wanted to add the AQ is top notch as well. Very clean and directional. Not overwhelming but the rail and storms felt like you where there.

On a side note the outdoor scenes were filmed south of Calgary. Same general location as legends of the fall, open range, and other westerns. I remembered it snowed during filming and eastwood was so impressed with the snow covered prarie he film lots of vistas to use even though most production had been cancelled.
