View Full Version : advice - need good RF modulator (Ch 3-4)

I have an old TV with only RF input, and would like advice on a hi-fi good quality RF modulator for Channel 3-4.

I also am looking for a 4 channel A/V input selector, preferably with IR remote (possibly auto switching). It only needs to be analog (RCA composite video or S-Video + RCA audio L/R).

My price target is ~ $60 for all of this -- otherwise I might as well buy another TV. :-)

Any suggestions on good equipment to buy - especially the RF modulator?

I am happy with the quality of the rf mod in my Scientific Altanta Explorer 3250 digital cable box. (The rf mod in my Panasonic PV-7450 VCR is decent quality, not quite as good as the SA box.)

I bought a Radio Shack 15-1988 "Auto Sensing 4-way Stereo A/V Selector & RF Modulator" - but the rf mod was crap and I returned it. There were lines rolling on the screen and the picture was lower strength and degraded compared to the great picture on Channel 3 coming out of the SA cable box.

I'm now skeptical of the Terk RF mods, and other similar consumer items (Phillips, RCA, etc.) The available products seem to jump from this level up to the serious RF modulators with selectable UHF channels - more than I need (or want to spend). All I want is to convert composite video (or S-video) to Channel 3 or 4 at the same quality as my digital cable box does.

As far as the A/V input selector with IR remote, any opinions on this one: Radio Shack 15-1927 (for $30)?

(This one has component video RCA inputs, but I assume it will switch analog composite video just fine.)

Other suggestions for inexpensive A/V selectors with IR remote?

(I just want to be able to switch between digital cable, VCR, DVD, and aux inputs to my TV as monitor and stereo amp for audio.)

Thanks in advance!

I found a UHF modulator for around ~$40:
CE Labs 1001F
cable-electronics [dot] com

Anyone have experience with this model - PQ, reliability, etc.?

Is this going to be significantly better quality than a simple consumer Channel 3-4 RF modulator (Phillips, RCA, Terk, etc.)?

(I just need it to get composite video into an old TV with only RF input - but would like PQ as good as the rf mod built into my Sci Atl cable box.)

Thanks!

I'm using this RF modulator (http://www.beachaudio.com/product_info.php?products_id=36977&prodid=crf907&src=sli#) with an older TV. It only passes mono audio (as most inexpensive modulators do) which is fine for my application....the video quality is excellent.

This A/V selector with remote (http://www.beachaudio.com/product_info.php?products_id=31281&prodid=vh915&src=sli#) is very reasonably priced and gets good reviews but I don't own one myself.
