I'm having a problem with my computer recognizing my HV20 camcorder. I have it hooked up using the DV firewire connection going 4 pin to 6 pin to the PC. When I use Windows Movie Maker "Capture Video" I get a message " Video captured Device was not detected".

I have 2 firewire inputs on my PC and in either case, my computer can't find the camcorder. As a footnote, when I turn on the camcorder the LCD dislays a HDV/DV connection. I don't think there's a problem with my PCs firewire, because it works with my iPod. Further, I don't think there's a problem with the camcorder DV firewire, because I've hooked that up to my TV 's firewire (XBR960) 4pin to 4pin and it works great.

I've never tried hooking up a camcorder to a PC before. Am I doing something wrong? Are there special drivers I'm suppose to use or software to recognize the device? Perhaps my 4pin to 6pin is a faulty cable? Should I be using a 4pin to 4pin on the PC?

Any help from the PC video experts would be greatly approciated.

I hit the same issue the first time I tried hooking up my canon last night... I'm going to try again in abut an hour, but if anyone has suggestions... :)

First, you won't see the cam listed in MY COMPUTER. It shows up in DEVICE MANAGER as AV/C DEVICE under the "sound, video controllers" heading.

Second, if you're working with XP then movie maker does not recognize hi def camcorders. You need a proper editor that works with HD

Download HDV Split, it's free and it works great with the HV20.

Start there...

I'll listen to anyone with an army of darkness quote in their sig...

so for hdvsplit...
what are you using after hdvsplit to take the footage from 1080i to 24p? or are you just using 1080i?

Thanks for the quick response!

I was looking all over for it in Device Manager, but never lthought to look under "Sound, Video Controllers". I now see it listed as "AV/C tape device".

I guess I'll also need an HD editor as you mentioed. Perhaps I'll try HDVSPLIT.

Update: As an FYI, As soon as I switched the camera to DV mode from HVD mode, Movie Maker recognized the hardware.

Yup, great movie. :D

After Effects will remove the pulldown.
Other applications will as well... I'm only really familiar with AE though.

This is because movie maker was built for DV cams. ANY DV based program should work with the canon so long as you have it set up for dv. However you will not get Hi def in this mode... it will be standard def (720x480)

thanks for the info here too... I'm starting to test all of the methods mentioned
cineform looks promising, and has a 15-day trial
anyone have experience with it?
