Hey folks - Hopefully I am posting this in the correct forum (newbie here).

I recently purchased a house that is set up for a 5.1 system. It has binding posts at the 7 foot level. The problem seems to be that because they are not recessed, and have the binding post sticking out from the wall, I can’t seem to find the best way to mount a speaker to these things.
I have not yet purchased any speakers (but was leaning toward the Onkyo HT-S894 system). These speakers will not sit over the binding posts because the posts stick out too far. I up for ideas on what others have done in this situation. I have gone to several stores to ask for help, unfortunately most of the store help I have asked aren’t much help.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

If you can snap a photo it might help everyone here visualize what you are trying to do.
It sounds like you might need to look for a recessed outlet style box. I think they make them for clocks. This would recess it enough to hang a speaker over it. You could also look on parts-express for some binding posts and custom make a low voltage box.

I vote for removing the binding posts and either: happily find out that there is some slack in the wiring, and you can just attach the wire directly to the speakers - or - crimp / solder a short extension "pigtail" to the wire in the wall and use that. I hate extraneous binding posts - to me they serve no purpose.

I had the same issue with my ADP-170's - I had put keystone jack wallplates / binding posts at the surround locations, and found that the speaker liked to sit flush against the wall. I just removed the plates I had so happily installed, and hung the speaker over top of the now uncovered junction box.

I never take the speakers down to show guests, and only you, me, and whoever reads this will ever know...... ;)

I never thought of that. I will try to simply remove the plates and see if that alleviates my problem. :-)

You can also use a blank wall plate and drill a hole big enough to pull the speaker wire through and mount the speaker around the plate. Or as close as possible. I'm sure it will be satisfactory.

However, like YW84U mentioned if you can remove the plate all together and mount the speaker directly over the J-box that would be best.

goodluck.
