View Full Version : Do you think you will use "home"
tingham 04-14-07, 09:10 PM Hello AVSers,
I just watched the "home" trailer and I see me using this application very little...if at all! With the highest average age group of people "according to the AVS Poll here" owning the ps3 between 26 and 35...and the next highest ownership group35+..do you think you will use "home" when it comes out?.Viewing our poll results here I wonder if it is vindicative of all PS3 owners. Could this be a waste of time for Sony? The PS3 is expensive for most of the really young crowd...and this is the only genre I see using this application... maybe Sony is looking a few years down the road for "home" to take off when the ps3 is cheaper and most parents can afford to buy one for their kids....
But it looks to me...at present time...the age group of ps3 owners is a little older..I am in the 35+ poll and none of my friends even own a PS3 yet...Their kids have ps2's and gamecubes,xboxes...and the occasional 360..these kids are the one's I see using "home".But they won't be able to unless their parents purchase the Ps3. If the average overall owner of the ps3 is say 30 to 40 they are buying it for themselves...not their kids who are in the age group who I think would use "home". Maybe I am wrong on this and I will use "home" more than I think when it comes out. What do fellow Avser's think about the functions it has to offer? Maybe some of you have more idea's than I on how you would utilize it?
joe_six_pack 04-14-07, 09:18 PM to be honest, it looks cool, but probably not. I have a group of friends that I game with, but we're primarily gamers. It's kinda doubtful we'll sit around & chat in home WOW style.
Between the LBP announcement & Home, I know which one I was more excited over.
FrankJ.Cone 04-14-07, 09:21 PM For a week. Maybe less. In the end I want to do one thing: See what my friends are doing and invite or join them. For that I need a clean simple interface not a 3D world. I think Home might interest my wife but I just am not looking for that kind of enviroment from my console.
clevername 04-14-07, 09:22 PM I honestly have no plans to use it.
Seems a bit myspacey to me and I'm not creative enough or interested enough in thousands of other people's creativity to care about that sort of thing.
Maybe if you could like start fights with other people, then it might be cool...otherwise it looks like a super enhanced version of The Sims w/ actual ppl as characters. I might use it the first couple of days when it comes out, just to see how it is, then probably won't touch it.
it does look cool and i can see a lot of people getting into Home. but as for me, i probably won't be using it at all.
chartwel 04-14-07, 10:55 PM ill use if for the trophies, arcade games and chatting with people. the future of the internet is a 3d world like that so you should get use to it....................
Scotty L 04-14-07, 11:19 PM I say no....
...but I said the same thing about myspace, and i ended up using it a lot. :o
Hastley 04-14-07, 11:23 PM Thats not really the future of the internet. The entire purpose of the internet is to be able to find information quickly by being connected to other databases. I really do not think i need to see little 3d icons, nor does it make it anymore informative. Although, at the same time, i find myspace to be very fruity (read: pointless), so i suppose that at some point this could be implemented, but i dont think it would ever be mandatory (meaning as a requirement to go on the internet in general).
For reference i am 21. I think home is a cool idea, but thats about it, not practical, and pointless for me. If i buy the ps3 to game on, i want to game on it, not spend an hour chatting while running around getting into a game. Xbox live is really as advanced of an interface as i need. On the other , xbox live can also be improved by having dedicated servers.
So, to answer the original question, Xbox live plus PS3 dedicated servers > Home.
mixxxer 04-14-07, 11:32 PM Not enough guns, killing and explosions for me.... I will be playing games to much to ever hang out in 'Home'.
jedimastergrant 04-14-07, 11:41 PM I will definitely give it a try and see what happens. Also check in from time to time as more people might be spending time there. I think it will be interesting to use it for watching trailers in real time with other people next to you and then being able to talk to people about it right away. That will be cool.
Also, I think people are worried that it could take forever to get people together to play online. I trust that Sony is aware of this and are streamlining the process and it ends up enhancing the experience not just being a time consuming pain in the a$$.
Lots of possibilities. It needs content and people.
jason_grumpy 04-15-07, 12:11 AM I view @home as an EverQuest/Wow type environment. I'm sure lots of people will use it,as long as it's moderately accessible. It looks like an RL MMO.
I don't forsee my myself using unless it has some nice interactive mini games such as cards, pool etc. I do recall seeing a pool table in one set of pictures, but there's no way of knowing if it was interactive or not with it
timberdoodle 04-15-07, 12:43 AM Home has the potentially to deliver an unparallelled interface of video on demand programming and virtual interaction. I am looking forware to the streamed hd content, and social interaction games seen in the trailers.
spinksjinx 04-15-07, 01:04 AM Fiance=Most likely
Me=Not going to happen
Im not into socializing in games, the few select I do with is on the 360 as its an easier interface to do so. I love to trash talk in some of my games most notably sports/wrestling so no I doubt it...Seems to be built for cherries or females....Interests me 0%
Sofdec7 04-15-07, 01:44 AM As just a 3d chat world I don't see it succeeding. Depending on how much they add beyond that can really make or break "home".
I believe you'll have the ability to play music/videos and let others "visiting" you view them while in your "house". This is a neat idea - I would also like to see live events broadcast though. Maybe live concerts, competitions, etc.. Maybe even a way to see what your friend is playing (and actually SEE it on their screen). If they add some more gameplay to it than just the minigames (make it an animal-crossing type game that continually changes and expands) it could be very neat.
I doubt I'll use it. I have friends, and I can find new ones when I'm on message boards, etc....times when I'm not able to play. When I do have time, I'd rather be playing some games than walking around some Sims type environment.
That said, I think there's a ton of people that will use it. I just think that's going to the be younger kids and people sharing multimedia. Speaking of which, I usually can track down anything on the web. Why would I want to waste time meeting up, getting people together, etc.? I'll watch it on my own time and discuss it while gaming if I want.
eddy_winds 04-15-07, 03:41 AM Have you ever played FFXI?
You ever been to Jueno or Art Urghan..
The Gameplay works well there.
Give it a Chance. You'll be hanging out there in no time. ;)
LOL
OK, nobody is going to use home. Hello, Sony, no need to bring it to market, no one wants it. OK, enough sarcasm, but it does seem so far most who have posted are the ones who won't use it. Projecting is hard though let's see what happens when it is out and what it is really all about.
I think it's a mistake to call Home something like an MMO. Everquest, Final Fantasy and such are games with quests, weapons and purpose. The purpose of Home is to go to a mall like public area and your house.
I'm not sure World of Warcraft would be as popular if it were called "World of Chatting" and featured only one land, three minigames and no purpose beyond that.
Home is a Myspace/Second Life/Habbo Hotel thing. Nothing more nor less. That will still be fun for the younger crowd, but it certainly won't ever be mistaken for an MMO.
Chiribo 04-15-07, 06:04 AM What everyone seems to have forgoten or not even noticed in the first place is that Home is Sony's way of taking some preasure off of the developers when creating the online enviroment.
Phill said that from Home you'd be able to launch multiplayer game sessions quite easely rather than going through the ingame menu's that aren't always upto scratch.
Home is also a way of viewing/showing your achievements, something that should appeal to the xbox1.5 crowd :)
I personaly don't see myself using Home for more than creating multiplayer games and sometimes running about playing something like Pool within the enviroment, just killing a bit of time when I wanna. The only times I'd use it for socialising sorta thing is when I get other people in there from say other forums that I visit and just chat to them there rather than the forum.
djmoose 04-15-07, 07:09 AM I'm actually excited about home. Now...I'm 30...been gaming since 3rd grade...was playing Tradewars on dial-up local BBS's way back when....
I don't EVER or ever desire to go into chat rooms....I don't meet people on the internet...that's not what I'm looking at...
I think a place for friends to meet and chill and game looks neat. Anyone in clans for a particular game will enjoy home I think...
plus, being able to have your own apartment, show your own videos, game with friends...
looks cool, really looking foreward to it.
I also said that I'd never really use myspace...but it HAS turned into a great place to keep in touch with people...
michael000 04-15-07, 08:00 AM This is an AV board so of course the average ages are going to fall into those categories. I see the AVS regular as someone 25+ out of college and in some kind of steady decent paying job. If you were to go to a real gaming board the results would be drastically different. That's why trying to gauge whether or not Home is a waste of time or not by going by this forum would be pointless since the crowd that frequents AVS isn't the demographic that makes up the majority of PS3 owners.
That being said i can see myself using it for achievements, private lobbies, and those simple yahoo type games (stuff like that bowling or pool) to pass time, but i wouldn't be one of those people out there just to chat in public lobbies.
joe_six_pack 04-15-07, 08:15 AM I'd rather see sony integrate the features of the xmb faster sooner rather than later.
Things such as having a minimum spec for online gaming (for developers) like chat, lobbies, integrated friends lists; maybe a custom soundtrack playable in-game; in game chat (with people in the xmb or in other games).
If they can do these thing, it would go a long ways towards relieving critcism of the psn.
Dungwader 04-15-07, 09:53 AM Will I use it? Sometimes. Mostly I will do most of my activities through the XMB. It sounds cool and you know I'll be one of the first sporting my moogle hat or whatever possible clothing option is availible through FFXIII's extras but in the end it is a nice free option that I don't see myself using much. I just hope that they are focusing on refining the XMB as much as they are focusing upon Home.
GW-SMOkeY 04-15-07, 10:16 AM Most likely, it seems interesting. A nice place to hang out when I am not doing anything else.
TwinTurboJosh 04-15-07, 10:22 AM If it's the easiest way to join an online game with all your friends at the same time, I'll use it
jkoch6599 04-15-07, 10:26 AM Maybe I'll look at trophies, but I'm not interested in chatting or interior design.
the future of the internet is a 3d world like that so you should get use to it....................
Sure it is. That was the expectation back in the mid 90s, too.
VRML sure did catch on, didn't it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRML
RobertR1 04-15-07, 05:14 PM Seeing that I don't use myspace/chat room or have any interest in Sim games, a solid no. I just want to play games and watch movies.
lacombo 04-15-07, 05:22 PM if its easy to get in and play some time wasting pool or whatever then going to a game once peeps are on then yeah, I'll be on. but the decorating and trophies are not my thing. I dont worry about AP so why would I care for a trophy...
Now If I can save a vid or pic of butt wuppin score and put it up then thats my decorations and trophies.
Rock Daddy 04-15-07, 06:16 PM If this is where we will have to go to get demos and movie trailers as well as other online content. Then I will use it.
It seems that is the direction its going so I assume the playstation store will go away at some point.
HybridHB 04-15-07, 06:27 PM I think it was also a matchmaking system, so in that case ill use it a lot.
SirDrexl 04-15-07, 06:30 PM I'll need to know more about it and try it before I can say whether I'll use it or not. One thing I want to know is if the content (like the music) will be stored online or on my system. I might put some stuff up if it's on their servers, but I'm not going to leave my PS3 on so people can download from it.
I also wonder how much it will be plagued with advertising. If they're going to keep PS3 online free, the servers have to be paid for somehow.
isaidme 04-15-07, 07:12 PM $hit No! They are wasting too much time on this crap! We need games.
VReeder 04-16-07, 10:03 AM So, does anyone else think that maybe Sony will tie all of the media center functionality for which many of us have been waiting to the Home concept? I haven't seen the trailer but I could see there being a Sony Media store front in my "Home" neighborhood where I could purchase and download music and videos. Hopefully the updates to make the PS3 more of the media center hub it was promised to be would come along by then. At least I hope so. I keep looking at Apple TV and thinking that is what I thought the PS3 would be able to do.
Tripjammer 04-16-07, 12:46 PM They have been working on home for like 3 years. So far in what we have seen it is fast and tight. You can play games and watch movies in home also. Home is be big and fast, and you do not have to use it if you do not want to, which is cool.
The PS3 will have game comming out in the next few months and especially by the end of the year.
Hopefully the HOME beta will start this week...
donricouga 04-16-07, 12:56 PM I see it as good thing with appeal to many people, even those that say "I WON'T USE IT"
This virtual world has alot of potential in my opinion.
I see alot of people being creative with their "pads" and their own looks. Wouldnt it be nice if you can have guard dogs outside your virtual house to virtually maul people that aren't allowed in to the private chat ?
Hastley 04-16-07, 01:24 PM You know, i rarely desire to be negative, but i sincerely hope this isn't what gaming is going to turn into. Albeit i play games to participate in virtual worlds, whether that be oblivion or gears of war or motor storm.
Is the new trend going to necessitate that i enter a virtual world so that i can enter the virtual world that i want to be in. I really just dont understand how people can find home to be so "awesome" when really all it is is smoke and mirrors 3d my space with game lobby's. Socializing is great. But it seems like people are becoming less and less reliant on real social skills.
The real problem arises from the anonymity of the internet. Internet "tough guy" syndrome seems to be sweeping the virtual worlds. Young children and immature adults feeling the need to act in a disrespectful manner online because there are no consequences, and they no longer need to act in an appropriate manner. Play any match of Halo 2, or really any game with Microphone/headset, and you'll see what i mean.
I miss the days of 4 people huddling around the n64 on an all night goldeneye multiplayer round, because at least the trash talk there was fun, and meant something, and after words, you really couldnt get too upset because, you were in an environment where people had been socially trained to be respectful.
How can we really expect people to play games in a fun way (trash talk is ok, but some people take this stuff way tooo far online because they are self purported "bad asses." See in the real world, if they had to socialize this wouldnt fly, not for one minute.
Anyway, i dont necessarily oppose Home, i just think its going to make gaming worse. However, since its not necessary that i use it, perhaps it wont be a problem for me
Conspiracy* 04-16-07, 02:12 PM Im an avid myspace hater.
I dont care about chat rooms and I think people that lurk in chatrooms are socially deprived.
Yet I feel like I'll be spending a large amount of time decorating my "home". I think calling Home an MMO would be extremely correct. I played Ultima Online for 5 years and for the most part its just an interactive chat room. For some reason its so much different to me than just going into a yahoo chatroom though. I used to spend hours and hours decorating my house in UO and friends would come by and hang out. I was a pvper and didnt like the whole dungeon crawl aspect of the game but for the most part, I was there for the community. I found and maintained friends in UO that I've visted in RL. I could never do that with the psn or online gaming the way it is set up now. Online gaming is a competition for me...when Im playing resistance, even if Im in a party with people, I dont really talk other than cursing at the game for my grenade not blowing up at the right time. Home gives me the option of hanging out with people outside of that competitive environment long enough to get to know them as a person.
Basically yes. I am seriously looking forward to home.
briankmonkey 04-16-07, 02:28 PM I'm sure I will explore it to see what it is all about.
Hastley 04-16-07, 02:31 PM To above poster: You indicated above that you think that chatrooms are for the socially deprived. Then, you like Ultima online to a chatroom, and say that its not socially deprivating. then you say you want the PSN to be able to social online because you cannot do it in real life.
This was my whole point, is that socializing should be done in real life, in the manner that your speaking with it. I agree online gaming is competitive, and i also think that it shouldnt really be THE MAIN SOURCE of socialization.
*for reference, i played everquest, which is similar to UO, for a couple years, so i know what im talking about*
yakkosmurf 04-16-07, 02:41 PM I'm keeping an open mind. At first glance, I would only use it to setup online games. The pool and arcade games looked interesting too. I agree that I won't sit and chat on it, but I might build a house and that sort of thing. I'm very intrigued by the possibilities, so I won't pass judgement until I see it. Also, with as big of a project as this is, I doubt any game development resources are being used toward it. The amount of work needed to pull this off seems like it would need it's own group of dedicated developers.
b.greenway 04-16-07, 02:46 PM Do you think you will use "home"
Not if I can help it, I'll take tabbed, menu-driven options any day over stuff like this.
so's your face 04-16-07, 03:04 PM i think home might make a larger impact on long distance friends...
look at how UNO has quietly taken off on xbox... i have several friends from college who now are scattered about the country, but manage to make monday nights a social event by playing UNO and just chatting.
i could see myself and several friends doing this with home(if i can convince them to get ps3's...) because with families and jobs, it's too hard to try and go visit friends just to visit and i think that this is one of the many ambitions of "home," to help maintain friendships in a more interactive way than emails or myspace.
if i can hang out with a friend or few from out of town in "home" and play, poker for example, and trash talking breaks out we can duke it out over a game of mortal kombat to see who's right.
Tripjammer 04-16-07, 04:05 PM if its easy to get in and play some time wasting pool or whatever then going to a game once peeps are on then yeah, I'll be on. but the decorating and trophies are not my thing. I dont worry about AP so why would I care for a trophy...
Now If I can save a vid or pic of butt wuppin score and put it up then thats my decorations and trophies.
You can probably do this in your apartment.
Tripjammer 04-16-07, 04:11 PM i think home might make a larger impact on long distance friends...

Just think, if you could just hang out and play some Pool in home with some other people? Can you do this anywhere else? It would be so cool. Even bowling...its all possible in HOME. We just got to wait and see how it will all turn out. Remember you do not have to launch home to play a multiplayer online game...it just makes it another way for people to meet up in your virtual apartment and chit-chat then go into Warhawk....
Mongoos150 04-16-07, 06:34 PM It's a neat idea, but honestly? I don't think I would ever use it. MAYBE if I was stone cold bored... but honestly, walking around in a mock-Second Life talking to people on my nonexistant PS3 keyboard? *Yawn*
tingham 04-16-07, 07:26 PM Thank's for all your post's here everyone!...There are some interesting post's on how we might use "home". From what I saw in the trailer my first thought was.. I would not be into this at my age. Making custom avatar's of myself..customizing my space..making e-motes(cartoon like expressions) of myself...Hanging out in a 3d world... I know I will not be doing this stuff...but maybe some other's..like pool or cards..like some have suggested. Hopefully the beta will come out soon and all of us will get a feel as to whether or not we will like it.Sony say's in the trailer it is only the beginning of "home" so who knows what they have in-stored for "home" . We all might be forced to use it like some have mentioned. If it makes the PS3 better I am all for it!!!
By the way...donricougare...love this quote..reminds me of my wife..Laugh everytime I see it!!!
Girlfriend : "Can we buy The Wild on Blue Disc so we can watch it in 1180p ?"
goofart 04-16-07, 07:37 PM I will definitely be using it. I think it's awesome (and I don't blog or myspace). I always like the ability to customize characters (heck I bought a wii just to play with the miis) and even though you would be able to shoot zombies with your home character I still think this is a really fun feature.
