View Full Version : Anyone Else Hold Back A Little On Buying?
Was just curious if I'm the only guy who didn't completely unload his pockets for the 15th Amazon thing (I only pre-ordered 1 movie today, SATB)...I've never been big on online buys...I can't be the only one who will be buying more of these titles in the coming weeks?? For example, next tues (the 24th) I'll be buying The Nutty Professor and Eternal Sunshine at BB with a printout for a pricematch, then the Road Warrior, then in May The 40 Yr Old, MI 1&2, etc...
Not a poll, just curious if anyone else didn't blow all their wad today and still plan on buying more titles in the coming weeks like myself? :)
divianb 04-15-07, 05:37 PM I will buy Skeleton Key in the following weeks.
mchuckp 04-15-07, 06:04 PM I was going to put down some pre-orders but just going to order one current title and pre-order matrix today.
I didn't do any Amazon pre-orders. I have matrix and planet earth pre-ordered from WB.
I plan on picking up some more HD-DVDs but didn't feel I need to buy them all on just the 15th. It'd be a shame to see a massive sales spike and then dip well below the norm for several weeks.
ClashFan 04-15-07, 06:37 PM I did. I ordered 3 titles and preordered 2 more. There are several titles up for preorder that I'll be ordering closer to their release dates, such as The Road Warrior, Rio Bravo, etc.
divianb 04-15-07, 06:53 PM We will be able to keep great numbers all the time. Not just today.
Jive Turkey 04-15-07, 07:45 PM After feeling buyers remorse from 'Children Of Men', both being a boring movie and picture quality of so-so grade, as well as a a couple of other blind buys that didn't pan out, I'm in a frame of mind that I'm not spending these big bucks to buy HDDVD's UNLESS it's something I've seen and want for my collection.
I'm sure there'll be exceptions, and this may just be a phase for me, but I need to see the prices start to drop to really fuel my buying again.
assasyn 04-15-07, 08:23 PM Just 1 for me.
FatiusJeebs 04-15-07, 08:25 PM You are not alone. Unfortunately...budget is definitely an issue with me. Although there are many movies that I would love to order for my add-on...my biggest interest and my budget clearly dictated that all I could get today was Planet Earth. I had already put down some money from the WB sale earleir sooooo...My hands were kinda tied. BUT....I am sooooo STOKED for the arrival of Planet Earth!!!
throwback559 04-15-07, 08:26 PM I didnt get as many HD DVD's as i wanted to
sorry
gerrynole 04-15-07, 08:30 PM yea....still haven't ordered;

Thanks for all the replys, glad to see some others plan on more purchases in the coming weeks! Hopefully we won't see such a major drop off.
For me, it's not a money issue at all, it's just I'm greedy, and when I think that I can have a title in hand and watch it the day it hits the streets, well, I prefer that over online buying. Like SATB I pre-ordered today - it cost me $26.93 total from Amazon ($19.95+$6.98 2 day shipping)...so, had I simply waited until release day, found the cheapest place to buy it and print that out, hit BB and have 'em match it, I'd have it on the 22nd for the cheapest price, case closed, but by getting it at Amazon, I paid more because of the shipping (I didn't have to get 2 day shipping, but then it'd be like a friggin' week later, so again, why bother with online for new releases that you eagerly want) and actually don't even get it until the 24th, 2 days after I could've had it...so other than helping the stats (unless I'm missing something?), I just don't see the rational for online buying of movies, but that's just me, a greedy, impatient guy who wants his new movies PRONTO! :)
DaveinTucson 04-15-07, 09:00 PM Well, I already pre-ordered heavily during the Warner Online promotion, and had already pre-ordered Dreamgirls, so I've pretty much pre-ordered everything I want for the rest of April and May.
And I kinda pooh-pooed the whole idea of buying as much as possible on one day to try to affect the numbers. I had saved pre-orders for Smokin' Aces & The Game for today. I was impressed when I saw the sales spike on eProductsWar, and scoured Amazon's listings & went ahead and added 3 catalog releases I had been resisting upgrading my DVD's to HD DVD.
But now I'm pretty well tapped out until June. But the thing to remember is this pre-order spike will translate into Nielson Videscan results as titles are released & the sale recorded. At least I don't think we'll be seeing anymore Sony "Executive Reports" touting BD outselling HD DVD 9 to 2. ;)
Azrael616 04-15-07, 09:01 PM I didn't order everything I wanted today. I didn't want a bunch of discs coming in all at once, and too many pre-orders can lead to surprising CC charges a couple months down the road after I've forgotten I ordered this title or that title.
tundrSQ 04-15-07, 09:28 PM I have not ordered any today...I still might grab a couple before midnight, so to support the effort, but nothign jumps out at me as a must have.
I'm thinking King Kong so I can have a demo disk and maybe Lucky#Slevin. The disks I really want currently are only available in SD....24 season 1-5 and Casino Royale. :(
maingon 04-15-07, 10:34 PM I ordered 2 Planet Earth and the Jerk but waiting for the rest later
toxic_avenger 04-15-07, 11:00 PM I ordered 11 total movies(10 us 1 import) I had to take off Feast, NiN(I haven't picked up my sound system yet so I'll wait on this) and a few imports. I'll be ordering more in the upcoming weeks though.
wildfire99 04-15-07, 11:03 PM The warner sale pretty much nuked my budget already.
I was not able to get any today, but yesterday I got The Searchers and Payback. Fry's is my new favorite place to buy software, there were only a few titles over $19.99. Problem is it takes at least 30-45 minutes to get there.
Spreading it out, but the spike is impressive!
junglejim9823 04-15-07, 11:27 PM I bought 2 today to support the effort. The OP is correct, we have to try and keep up the momentum instead of a one day spike. Much easier to spread out the debt over a longer period.

I planned on ordering a couple of things but some idiot pulled out in front of me last week and I need to make sure I have any cash I need. I pulled every pre-order till May. Hopefully my car will be fixed without a deductible through the other guys insurance. But I can't take any chances. Which sucks through may I had like about 20 movies I wanted to get.

I kinda of held back. I've got so many movie that I have yet to watch that I haven't been buying for a while so the timing was sort of convenient and sort of showing my support.
I bought eight, but only one pre-order. I will buy 5-10 movies a month for the foreseeable future.
Though I was tempted to shoot off a bunch of pre-orders . . . :)
I only could order half the planned amount, but I will probably order the other half in about two weeks.
invadergir 04-16-07, 01:35 AM Didn't buy/pre-order anything yet. I might get a movie or 2 soon but i need to work out the finances first before i buy. PLus i'm already behind a few movies to watch for HD-DVD and Blu-ray (Layer Cake, Out of Sight, Jarhead, Rocky Balboa, Sahara, Children of Men and Brokeback Mountain) Stil though i do see myself buying a ton come the end of the month and May (if the weather doesn't clear out for Golf Season)
JaylisJayP 04-16-07, 10:26 AM I bought 2 movies but held off on Planet Earth or any other pre-orders for now.
GlennRW 04-16-07, 10:30 AM At least mention the entire name of the flic you are talking about i mean SATB, you must feel like the "in-crowd" ??? not everyone knows that or wants a headache thinking about it.
Mike1117 04-16-07, 10:49 AM I only bought 3 discs yesterday (including pre-order of PE). There are a couple of HD-DVDs out already that I still want and a bunch of pre-orders I could have gone for. The rest of my purchases I will be spreading out over time like I usually do. I figure as great as the one day sales celebration was, you don't want sales to die after that. On that note, I will probably order another HD-DVD later this week.
I held back a bit. I already had 3 discs on pre-order, so I ordered another 3. As a rule, I don't like to pre-order too far in advance, 1 month tops, prefering 2-3 weeks. I'll pre-order more at the end of the month.
J
jones07 04-16-07, 11:38 AM Didn't buy any pre-orders either. Going to order Dreamgirls next week
Tarzan24 04-16-07, 12:32 PM I'm waiting for the two John Wayne movies to come up for preorder. I already own all the classic HD-DVDs that have been released so far, and will buy more when they put them out. I'm just not that into the current crop of releases. Give me some Hitchcock and I will be happy.
Topweasel 04-16-07, 12:55 PM At least mention the entire name of the flic you are talking about i mean SATB, you must feel like the "in-crowd" ??? not everyone knows that or wants a headache thinking about it.
He is talking about Smokey and the Bandit. I had to look this up on hidefdigest. The funny part is he should have typed it as SatB.
Blister72 04-16-07, 01:59 PM I must admit, after the horrible pain in the @$$ time I have had with "Children of Men" working properly on my HD-A2, I am holding off on ANY Universal titles.
I would love to get Planet Earth, and Smokin' Aces (But it is a Universal release  ) We (The family) just picked up "Corpse Bride" and watched it yesterday... AMAZING audio and video!!!
And lastly, I'm waiting on "A Scanner Darkly" on HD DVD to show up from Amazon very soon!!! Oh Yeah, I'll be calling in that day to stay home and watch it without interruptions from the Mrs. or the toddler! :D
Doing my part to keep up the HD DVD pace, but most do nothing for me. :(
Yeah, my bad, should have taken the extra 2 seconds it takes to actually type out Smokey and the Bandit...but the particular title I pre-ordered was not the point. Still happy to see a number of people planning on buying more new stuff as street dates approach instead of having gone for broke on the 15th. =)
StimpsonJCat 04-16-07, 02:12 PM I left some room for purchases in the upcoming months, but with my PE purchase I'm going to have to take it easy for now.
I will probably buy all of my titles from Amazon unless there is a really good deal. With 10% off their already low price, no tax, and free shipping (if I group them right) it works out much cheaper than B&M even with the price match. I have had no trouble with Amazon and I'm very happy with the way they pack them. The only advantage to B&M is getting them right then & less hassle for returns.

I blew my budget, but I bought only in stock titles that have been released that I never got around to buying. I deliberately did not preorder anything as I want to make sure that I will buy movies on a consistent basis instead of just binging a couple times a year. HD-DVD sales will eventually start flatspotting for a while, and at least i'll be able to make purchases when the time arises.

Yes, I've staggered my buys this week. And there's plenty more in the pipe over the next few weeks.
But overall, I think there is so much enthusiasm for HD DVD right now that the upward trend over the last 3 weeks will definitely continue.
I think HD DVD will be in a solid lead within 5 weeks.
SamwisetheBrave 04-16-07, 02:27 PM I ordered/preordered 10 films on the 15th (thank you for my continuing 10% discount Amazon). Couldn't justify $62 for Planet Earth.
Then doubt crept in. So today (Monday) I cancelled SatB and the Untouchables for now and ordered Planet Earth (telling myself that this lowered its price from $62 to $26). Tortured logic, maybe but I dropped $36 and added $62. Just couldn't see piling PE on top of the ten I'd ordered....
bobgpsr 04-16-07, 02:29 PM Yes, I had Flags of Our Fathers (2 disc version) in my Amazon basket for the last week and just today after much reading/thinking finally broke down and finished up the Amazon order by also getting Planet Earth box set. Skipped out on the group buy this time.
Need to spread out that HD DVD buying hump after all. ;)
Rockokma 04-16-07, 02:47 PM The rest of the movies I want for HD DVD are Combo. I will never buy one, I would rather find a bargain and pay $15 dollars for the SD version.
In fact, I hate combo discs so much I'de rather pay the same price for the SD version as the combo.
Combos are holding me back from buying HD discs at the moment. I hate em.
No movie is worth 30 dollars, I wouldn't pay 30 bucks for my favorites, I feel they are doing us wrong and I will stay away from them.
sorry, had to get that off my chest.
wildfire99 04-16-07, 04:33 PM Finding Amazon.com's HD-DVD mini 'store' I'm impressed with how many movies they have for under $20. I could definately spend a ton of money there.

It's a good thing you don't want Sony titles on Blu-Ray then. :)
Herzogian 04-16-07, 05:04 PM I bought movies that were only in stock, with the exception of PE. I originally was going to buy at least ten titles, but ended up just buying six. Besides, I prefer to buy mostly from B&M stores. With May and June arriving soon, along with must have titles for me, I'll be also staggering my purchases for the next three months.
It's about time anyway. I've been holding back for the past four months, because of the lack of new releases. It seemed like the enthusiasm for HD DVD was lost. It's good to see the enthusiasm return and I'm glad to be a part of it! :D

Damn good thing :D
chris062 04-16-07, 06:14 PM I have limited my buying because my wife's income is currently at $0.00 :(
I'd rather pay the same price for the SD version as the combo.
I wouldn't pay 30 bucks for my favorites
You contradict yourself just a bit here...
Jackson50 04-16-07, 11:48 PM I'm holding on any movies that come out on Combo Format, it really sucks, can't get them to play right.
bunkaroo 04-17-07, 12:20 AM I'll by the $20 catalog titles no problem, but Uni is not getting another dime from me for a combo disc until they work their issues out., and even then it would have to be amovie I can'[t live without on HD.

I'm pretty sure things will get worked out between Universal and Toshiba as this is probably one of their highest priorities considering the exposure this issue is getting on the internet. Just sit back and have a beer for now :)
I'm holding back in that I bought 2 movies that were already available but made no pre-orders.
