Is the Pioneer plasma a lot better than my sony 40" xbr1 lcd? I'm thinking about selling my sony to my brother and get the Pioneer for another $300. Is it worth the money? I usually watch sport and play games on my ps3 (blu ray movies). I like bright and crisp picture. My brother has a 50" phillips and I don't like the picture at all. Thanks for the advice

The Pioneer is different. I have the XBR1 and love it - you're right, bright and beautiful; the Pioneer, not as much, but better blacks, although it's a closer call with the Sony. Either way you would probably have the best in each class, although I've heard of image retention occuring on plasmas for video games.

If you like a bright, very crisp picture, you might want to look into the Samsungs with their DNIe feature. You might even be pleased with last's year's models, and they're priced low right now (for a big name brand HDTV). And, as someone who just had a 4270 delivered a few hours ago :D, I'd have to agree that it is different. Not necessarily better or worse, just a different style of picture.

DNIE BAD. I wish I could disable it in my Samsung 3251D like their DLP counterparts.

I wouldn't recommend any plasma for gaming.

Yes, but for his purposes, he might like DNIe. From what I've seen, it'll give him that "sharpened" look.

Yes, overly edge enhanced sharpness. :)

And I game on my plasma... or I have people game on my plasma for hours. Not a problem at all.

already been said. it depends what you want for the exchange.

bright and crisp = lcd

contrasty and deep blacks = plasma

both best in class :)

Yes, overly edge enhanced sharpness. :)Which the Pioneer plasma doesn't have.

That's why it looks different - it's actually MORE NATURAL ;).

Exactly. :)

I dont' get how people call edge enhancement "ENHANCEMENT". Explain to me how having your TV draw white lines across edges in the picture, arfitically ruining the source's true look should be called an enhancement'.

You call that sharp?

I call that sucky.

The best TVs can look sharp without all that crud. Edge enhancement gives you clear but artifical "fake" edges that some people enjoy, yes. But that also affects clarity when there's motion, and also destroys the finer details because your TV's drawing articial lines over fine detail as well.

My Samsung needs to be cranked down to Sharpness 0, to make it acceptable because DNiE always edge enhances the picture. Difference between a videophile and a person who loves to stare at pretty pictures on TVs?

Standards! And a need to see the picture on screen as it was meant to be seen, from the movie studio, the tv studio, or your home video camera.

So less crisp. less detail = more natural?

Interesting new stretch from the plasma camp... I somehow never liked the softy, blurry picture...

Oh suuure, 'or people'... C'mon. Play any RTS for its usual time - ie 4-5 hours - and then look at those areas where your info UI panels were displayed in the game, for 4-5 hours straight...
