Resolution Project Aims to Demo Digital Format Differences

Sometimes the music and electronics industries forget that many consumers don't understand the differences between digital audio formats.

John Calder of Generator LLC and a group of audio companies, including Dolby Labs, Steinberg, Monster Cable, Genex Audio, DPA Microphones, Great River Electronics and Minnetonka Audio Software, took it upon themselves to educate the masses. They've compiled the Resolution Project disc, which offers a selection of tracks that demonstrates the differences between various two-channel and surround formats.

Recorded simultaneously in three different PCM resolutions (16-bit/44.1kHz, 24-bit/96kHz and 24-bit/192kHz) by analog equipment and without equalization and compression, the disc captures the performances of a jazz piano trio and a classical string quartet using an array of microphone placement techniques.

The final product is presented as a DVD-Audio (DVD-A) disc that allows its producers to communicate the sound qualities of each format. In a statement, the Resolution Project says DVD-A is the perfect solution.
