Yea, but which drives? The BenQ drives?

I absolutely hate when people jump to conclusions.. especially on a technical site like this.

If you dont know the answer.. then dont starts threads pretending like you do.

Thank god somebody asked Amir directly if the Elite uses the BenQ drives or the other drives.

Good catch, I missed that -- the follow-up question is posted on the following page after the link in the OP. ...still waiting for an answer.

If Amir does give a definitive answer to the drive used in the Elite, someone please link it in this thread to clarify this situation to newcomers. Thanks!

Thats a chrome bezel on the DVD drive and a black wireless controller, neither of which were included with the dev kits.

Looks as though Amir has confirmed they will be using whatever is in stock at the time - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10327300&&#post10327300

I might actually buy the elite if the drive is quiet. That is one of my biggest complaints about my 360. And I would love to have more hdd space too. Depends if I can get anything out of my 360.

Major nelsons podcast interviewed chris hanson 2 weeks ago and he confirmed the elite would be a mix between samsung and benq drives. He also mentioned that both drives measure the EXACT same noise decibal level on both drives.

"According to XBOXIZGOOD, who already got an Xbox360 with this new drive, the BenQ VAD6038 runs super-quiet compared to the TS and HLG drives and even loads stuff a bit faster and smoother.
The new drive is based on Philips design (remember the Philips VAD6037 drive was already found before in some Xbox360 dev kits (no AES key), never in retail 360s though).
It was already announced for a while the retail Xbox360 would soon get a new 'BenQ-LiteOn-Philips' drive (these 3 companies merged their ODD business)."

I've always hated how loud my 360 is. Anyone ever notice how it gets louder right before it shuts off? I bought Elder Scrolls Collectors edition and it froze up on me. So yes, I'd like to see Microsoft make some improvements with it's hardware. I think you're buying the same console with a fresh coat of paint. I bet it will be loud just like the white ones we all bought at launch.

Your first problem is thinking this is true. ;)

IMO it's a toss up as I find the Hitachi drive to be louder than the Samsung while the fans in the newer models (mostly with Samsung drives) are louder than those found in the older model 360's (at least from my experience with several differnt 360's) . So even if they use a BenQ drive I hope they do not use the louder fans , the Elite should be aimed mainly at HT'ers so they should have made it as quiet as possible IMO .

I have also noticed that my launch 360 fans stay at a constant speed while my Dec. 06 built 360 has variable speed fans (temp sensor) . I also find it odd that they removed the 3 prong power cord for the brick , was there too many grounding issues being reported ?

Wow! Talk about an outright lie.

There are two models of Samsung drives. The older ones sucked and were loud/crappy, and the newer ones are much better. I don't have a link handy, but go to any of the XBox hardware nerd sites and check it out. Unfortunately I recall them using the same tray, so the only way to tell the difference is actually crack the system open and look at the manufacturer's sticker on top of the drive itself.

My wife's 360 has the BenQ drive, and I'm jealous (Oct '06 build). My 360 was built in Nov of '05, and is REALLY loud. I think I have the Hitachi.
