Good Morning All...
I have a room in the basement that was a dedicated theater room in the home I recently purchased. The entire basement has a drop ceiling installed. The ceiling looks typical of every other drop ceiling I've seen. I believe the ceiling tiles are a standard size (perhaps 2X2)? My question is...Can I purchase individual black ceiling tiles to replace the white ceiling tiles, and if so, where might I find something like this? I'm not looking for anything terribly expensive for my ceiling...just black. Any and all suggestions offered is greatly appreciated!

You certainly can buy black ceiling panels. Some here have done so, while others have painted theirs black because they didn't like the price of the black panels. I would imagine if HD or Lowe's couldn't special order them, a building supply wholesaler that was a USG or Armstrong dealer would be able to get them.

You'll find that painting white tiles with a flat black paint is far less expensive than
actually purchasing pre made black panels. Although the acoustic panels can absorb some paint, my experience was quite good using Walmart Flat Interior latex tinted to black. ...it's about 9 bucks a gallon, so it's not too expensive. I spay painted the metal grid flat black as well...

You can special order the black tiles at HD or Lowes... painting them yourself will cancel the acoustic properties and is a pain in the rearend... If you spray paint the grid, do it outside... the fumes can get pretty bad in a media room... you can touch it up with flat black once installed.

I painted by tiles black with behr paint, and spray painted the grids with a flat paint. turned out ok, but alot of painting. Each tile needed 2 coats. But less expensive than buying them on-line. I checked with HD and Lowes and niether one could get black tiles.
Bought mine @ Kamco Supply, you need to purchase a case, but they can order them for you.
As I stated in one of the previous links I ordered mine from HD, Armstrong Fine Fissured Ceiling Tiles 24 x 24 x 5/8. $61 for 64 sq ft (1 box), and you have to order by the box. HD SKU # 985-821 Armstrong model # 1728ABL. Take this information with you when ordering because I had to ask about 20 different HD employees, they all said the black was not available, eventually I found someone who had a clue! The black grids were ridiculously expensive, and you have to order large quantities, so it's worth painting the white. I have seen a HT on the forum with black tiles and white grid, and it actually looked quite cool. Good luck!

I had a hard time locating black tiles as well until I decided to phone USG/CGC and ask them where to buy from. They gave me a list of about 5 construction supply stores in my town that all carried them in stock. They were expensive though. About $900CAN for 300sqft but they have a very high sound rating. Black frost is the name of the tile.
