View Full Version : Format/Player Neutral Owner's Poll
B Leisle 04-18-07, 11:49 AM Let's assume every Hollywood studio heard your cry to exclusively support the format you prefer. Hollywood is at your beck and call. Which format would you ask for?
This poll is for those individuals that own a player(s) for both Blu-ray and HD DVD. If you do not own a player(s) that play both formats, please do not post. After all, this is for posterity! ;) Please don't let this become a flame-fest. Both formats have their technological pros and cons and current market prices, take everything for what it's worth. Feel free to comment if your vote is solely based upon your current investment position with a particular format.
~edit~ Sorry about the lack of poll, my browser crashed, I didn't realize it posted upon crashing.
xradman 04-18-07, 11:54 AM That's easy. It's HD DVD for me.
I have 107 HD DVD and 70 Blu-ray discs. But on pre-order, I have 37 HD DVDs with 2 Box sets (Matrix UE and PE) and only 5 Blu-ray discs. I think I'm speaking with my wallet on this. If I didn't truly think HD DVD was going to be the successful main stream format, I think my pre-order numbers would be reversed.
xradman 04-18-07, 11:54 AM Where is the poll by the way???
B Leisle 04-18-07, 03:39 PM Yeah, I knew those folks that have invested more heavily in one format would most likely be swayed, but that's an unavoidable reality.
Timothy Ramzyk 04-18-07, 03:57 PM Sorry I voted because I don't know how to see poll results without doing so.
It seems to me this pole was conducted about a month and a half ago, but I suppose there are new neutrals since then.
DESTURBED 04-18-07, 04:21 PM I own a Oppo 971H and i see myself happy for at least 2 more years to come. and i'm not to fond of sony's power pull
when it comes to studios, and yes blu-ray is clearly the better tech and format, but in order for me to buy one, sony has to come in like a folk hero and sell it to us around the same
price i just bought my oppo for.. I mean who has $500.00 or 1000.00 for player of any kind
in these money hard times ......
PS .
I like to thank every one for ther time and posts in all threads, thank you all.
DESTURBED 04-18-07, 04:33 PM let's get this war over with aready. so are kids won't be 30 years old by the time the format war is over .....
BOSS10L 04-18-07, 04:39 PM This thread won't end well....
I guess I would have to go with Blu-Ray.
boden11 04-18-07, 04:44 PM With all these polls I'm tempted to make a poll with:
Which will happen first:
a) Duke Nukem Forever is released
b) High Def format war is resolved

Blu-ray = no glitches. HD DVD OTOH...
cacruden 04-18-07, 07:30 PM I will likely buy a Blu-ray player within the next 3 months. My choice is based on the fact that it is Panasonic and Sony that are backing it, and it seems to be gaining momentum. Additionally, I prefer supporting the format that will store the most data (I am hoping that when it wins, the price of blank blu-ray media will start to come down). BTW, I have more than 10 terabytes in data on hard drives.
dilvish 04-18-07, 08:16 PM Well, if you're going to wait up to 3 months to get a blu-ray player, might as well wait a little more and get one with the final BD-J specs..
HD DVD = finished product. Blu-ray OTOH..

Blu-ray = no glitches...I'm glad I can always come to AVS for a good chuckle...

I'm refering to playback glitches. I have personally not experienced any with my PS3.

That's weird, 'cus it looked like you typed "Blu-ray = no glitches. HD DVD OTOH..."
my misenterpretation, sorry

Do I really need to rehash my experiences with the Toshiba HD-A1 here and take this thread further off topic? Do a search if your memory fails you. In any case, get over yourself. Heaven forbid someone doesn't have nothing but glowing things to say about HD DVD.
compscott 04-19-07, 12:02 AM I voted HD-DVD because overall the blu-ray movies I've seen so far on my PS3 don't match the picture quality of hd-dvd (my opinion) but I am hoping the pirates releases next month will change that.
and NYG the PS3 has been a great Blu-ray player so far but when I watched casino royal right after they tortured bond the picture froze into a bunch of coloured lines. the PS3 would not respond to the bluetooth remote or the PS3 controller so I had to hard reboot, but the rest of the movie played fine after that.

if they cost the same as they do today and have the same pq/aq as today, then it would be hd dvd for me but only because of the lower cost associated with the format. now if they cost the same, then i could care less and would likely buy the player that i though was coolest looking which would be the samsung bpd1000. i did not vote in the poll b/c i wanted my answer to be detailed.
btw i do own both formats. the funny thing is that since i do, i don't feel strongly about br or hd dvd since i can get any movie made and also can pick the better transfer if it's dual format. for example full metal jacket was better on hd dvd while mission impossible 3 was better on bd.
AudioArchitect 04-19-07, 12:57 AM Fool me once (Betamax), shame on you.
Fool me twice (SACD), shame on me.
Fool me three times (Minidisc), four times (i-Link), five times (ILLEGALLY imbedding software in music CDs), six times (new DVDs that dont play in DVD players).
Sorry had to do it.
B Leisle 04-21-07, 06:21 PM Thank you for participating.
