View Full Version : Ventilation for a sub?

Due to impending toddler-hood, I'm planning to move my sub into a cabinet. Setting aside the acoustic issues - what about ventilation? People talk a lot about dealing with the heat that receivers/amps produce, and it's surely several times more for that, than for a typical (non-hulking) sub. But is ventilation much of an issue? I'd tend to think not, since some subs are sealed, presumably with the amp inside. But I didn't see much here about it. If it's here and you have the thread link, it would be appreciated.

Well heat does change the TS paramaters of the driver resulting in a change of sound. Servo-feedback devices help fight the TS paramater changes by modifying the signal. But unless you are watching War of the Worlds at refernece level, you really aren't going to notice the difference.

Well, given that a sealed sub has essentially no way to dissipate heat at all - only what it loses through the cone and through a very thick cabinet, entirely passive cooling - I'd have to assume it's not much of an issue. I guess I'll give it a little room in the cabinet and keep an eye on how much heat builds up. I can open the cabinet if I'm expecting to give the sub a workout (which isn't going to happen very often these days).
