View Full Version : Digital Cable & Antenna into one input?

I just bought an LG 50PC5D plasma. It has only one RF input. I have both an off-air antenna (OTA) and a digital cable box. Currently, I have the the OTA hooked up to the one RF input and have the cable box hooked up via component cables. All works fine.

I disconnected the OTA and hooked up the cable line direct to the one RF input and my LG got all the digital cable channels. This is nice as I can return the cable box and stop paying the monthly rental fees. However, cable doesn't broadcast all the digital local channels that I was getting using the OTA.

I didn't think it was possible to use a diplexer to combine both the cable and OTA and hook it up to the one RF input on my TV. I've been told that the freqencies can overlap. However, the manual to my LG TV says I can use a diplexer to combine both OTA and cable. I would hate to damage my new TV in any way.

I have scanned the page in the manual that says this is allowable:

Is this possible? Has anyone tried hooking up OTA and digital cable to one input using a diplexer? I want to get both the off air digital channels and the cable digital channels.

Thanks,

Howard

It's not - cable and OTA overlap frequencies - you need an A/B switch - OR

get the cable box - feed from cable coax, into TV via HDMI / DVI/ component cables
AND get an OTA antenna - feed directly to TV coax input.

Using an A/B switch is not a good solution. You will have to do a channel scan every time you switch between OTA and cable. Keeping the cable box is your best option.

I would certainly agree with that assessment.

Not for every set though. My Sony will remember the Antenna scan and Cable scan independently though I do have to switch the Ant/Cable setting in the setup menu any time I switch the A/B input.

This is not the case with the 50PC5D, it has seperat scanning for CATV, DTV and OTA. You can use the A/B switch if you want but like the other post stated a cable box is best bet. I however get basic cable no HD no digital etc and was able to pullin 11 normally OTA channels " WSVN, PBS, Weather channel, wfor and a few others. and a crap lode of music and on demand stuff just by doing a channel scan with my cable pluged in, down side is no info on whats playing etc.. but for free you cant beat it.

Mits & Samsung DLP sets are the only ones that have two RF inputs with separate memories and a CC slot. AFAIC every set should have this as a basic feature.
