View Full Version : $5000 to spend. Need help!
SouthAV 04-18-07, 02:09 PM I've never posted before, but I'm sure someone here can help me out. I need an opinion on what new plasma to go with. I've got $6000 to spend and was considering the following.
1. Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1
2. Panasonic TH-58PZ700U (when they come out)
3. Panasonic TH-58PPX600U w/ new receiver in addition
Will be updating from old Mits 46" CRT RPTV. I will be sitting approx 12 feet from the new plasma set. Will be used for just about all viewing sources (but no computer use). I realize any comments on the new 700U panny will be speculative because they aren't available yet.
Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

If you need one now...? Screw it.
Heck... just wait and buy yourself the newer 8th Generation Pioneer Elite 1080p which should be around that price range. :)
A Pro-FHD1 with black level performance that rivals a CRT. You can't get better than that.
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 02:14 PM Hands Down Out Of Those...... Th-58pz700u !! :D
dlconner 04-18-07, 02:46 PM I know it is not on your list, but with 5k, I would either wait for the 8th generation pioneers this late summer, or go for the pioneer 6070HD. At 12 feet, 1080p is really not needed, and the 6070HD can be found for a decent price now days. If you HAVE to stick with one of your choices above, I would probably go for the Th-58pz700u.
I'd also add to the list Pioneer 607CMX w/KD HD Xplorer card, Pioneer Elite 1540, Pioneer 6070, NEC 60XR5 and maybe soon to be out 1080p 63" Philips.
SouthAV 04-18-07, 03:24 PM I knew I'd get some good feedback. Thanks to those who answered.
Looks like there are a few votes for the Pioneer 6070. Very impressive set (I checked it out a few days ago).
What about the 8th generation Pioneer/Elite with improved black levels as mentioned above? I heard they're not due out till late this year, or am I misinformed. I don't think I can wait that long to check it out.
I know the arguments for and against 1080p when viewed from my distance (12 ft), but I hate to lay out that kind of dough then realize in a year that 1080p sets are the future.
Thoughts?
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 04:16 PM ^^^^ That is about it !! Why settle for something that is not 1080P when the new Panasonics will be priced at the same price as the non-1080P sets. If 1080P is free I'll take it even though I cannot see it :D
SouthAV 04-18-07, 04:26 PM Amen.
Anyone have any other options I'm overlooking? Looking to buy in the next few weeks.
aquafire 04-18-07, 04:43 PM Panasonic TH-58PZ700U (when they come out)
When are these available? 120hz?
dlconner 04-18-07, 04:44 PM Amen.

If it is in the next few weeks, the 58" 1080p panasonic or the 6070HD pioneer would be my only two choices. 1080p will help future proof you, but the 6070HD 768p is an impressive set by its own rights.

But then you are still getting a Panasonic and not Pioneer. :D
SouthAV 04-18-07, 05:01 PM Does anyone have a firm idea on the availability date of the TH-58PZ700U. Some dealers say in the next few weeks, others tell me June/July? At least when I finally get to check one out, I'll be able to compare to the other options.
aquafire 04-18-07, 05:04 PM Oops..wrong model...
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 05:13 PM There are other good products besides Pioneer. In fact they are all good.
Philips
Hitachi
NEC
Runco
Fujitsu
Panasonic
Samsung
and don't forget about manufacturers who only make LCD's
Sharp
Westinghouse
Sony
If it is a flat panel and a premier brand, the unit is OK in my book.
I welcome you to the "Flat Panel Club" ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
There is no right or wrong answer. When a person gets there new "TOY" home all is well. There is no other panels in the room to compare it too. Enjoy your "TOY" ;)
RomanInvision 04-18-07, 05:28 PM Chris, I am just curious on your recommendation for the Th-58pz700u I was not aware you have seen it so how can you recommend it?
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 05:30 PM CES my Friend :)
aquafire 04-18-07, 05:31 PM Chris thats sweet!
Can you give us a quick review on the Th-58pz700u? Is it better than anything you have seen?
Are you a Plasma or LCD owner at home? Why?
thanks alot for the feedback!!!
SouthAV 04-18-07, 05:36 PM Didn't hear any comments on the Pioneer/Elite PRO-FHD1 on my list of considerations. I know it's a smaller display than some of the others discussed, but it seems pretty sweet to me.
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 05:41 PM NEC 50XR5A but I am looking to get a 60". My viewing distance is 7 FT (Oh YA !!)
Why I would not have an LCD on my wall, the known anomalies: Backlighting issues, cloudiness, banding, lighting anomalies, overall picture quality, black levels, price, and probably more.
Panasonic Started the Plasma Revolution in the past and they are now going to take it to the next level first again. They have about 45% percent of the sales with the "silver look", watch out now !! Especially going into 1080P for the same price as 1080I units.
Want to see something real close to the new 700U, take a look at the 65PX600U 1080P.

Many have commented that they prefer the 6070HD's picture to the FHD1. At your viewing distance, jumping down to a 50" just to stay 1080p is not going to do much for you besides shrink your display. If you want the elite version of the 6070HD, I believe it is the 1540, but it is still 867p as well.
If I were you, I would check out the respective threads. There is a FHD1, 6070HD, and panasonic thread on this forum that has tons of great information for those who own, and those who are looking to own these great sets.

Wow interesting I wonder what's going to happen to Pioneer, go out of business? That is funny I can't wait to put the new Pio next to the Panny's or even the current Pios to the new Pannys :) This is my last post about this as I do enjoy both brands but have an opinion.
If I were the OP I would wait and evaluate the 8G Pioneers. First sets are scheduled to hit the shelves late June/July. Dealers *should* have pricing info with the next 3 weeks.
Pittman 04-18-07, 09:46 PM Want to see something real close to the new 700U, take a look at the 65PX600U 1080P.
Cleveland, is which is better? the new 700U or the "old" 65PX600U?
Thanks
Cleveland Plasma 04-18-07, 10:56 PM I took a good look at the 700U but it is to early to see how they compare to the 600U, as far as the 65".
Pioneer makes a great product as noted, but it is fact that Panasonic controls 45% of plasma sales, that means they out sell every at least 2 to 1. We will see what happens this year.
HomerFan 04-19-07, 01:01 PM Get the Pioneer 6070!
It's a bargain at the current price, and you will NEVER regret the decision.
Even SD picture quality is superb, and compared to a 50" set, the 60" looks a lot bigger.
micah323 04-19-07, 01:08 PM Is there a new model of the 6070 coming out that is 720p or will all the new ones be 1080p? Either way I would imagine that the current street prices will drop when the new models are released.
To the OP, on another thread someone posted so info on the upcoming samsung 63" 1080p that I guess is coming out. I would look into that as well, it may be close to your price from online sources.

When the new models will be released there will most likely be no 6070HD found at least from good sources. There is always a window between older models and new models where not many are available. Just got a word that the 5070HD are gone from Pioneer so that means what is out there is out there :)
micah323 04-19-07, 02:02 PM roman- do you know if they are replacing the 6070 with a 1080p or if they will be releasing a 720p that is similar with a new model number?
Also if anyone has seen both, besides the 1080p the new 58" z700 will be pretty comparable in price to the 6070. Can someone compare or give any ideas on which one should provide the best pq?
The replacement for the 6070 will be a 1080p model only. Different model number for the 1080p.

I have not seen the new Pio and not sure if anyone has.
micah323 04-19-07, 02:44 PM have you seen the z700u and can compare it with the 6070?
RomanInvision 04-19-07, 02:57 PM Nope, but I am sure it will be a great model but again it goes go back to brand and 1080P argument and when to buy but we beat that topic up already.
SouthAV 04-19-07, 05:43 PM Ok, I want to check out the Pioneer 6070. But who's got a good deal. I'm somewhat new to the forum, so I'm not sure if we can give dealers names. But if it's cool, I'd love to hear where it would be best to check.
Thanks
