Well, I've been waiting to see if I would buy the Elite right away. My swinging vote was if the HDMI upconverted standard DVD'S like the current VGA does. I hope someone scores one early, and can answer this question like this guy could!!

The product spec sheet for the Elite says it upconverts "right out of the box". Sounds like that's your answer to me.

Upconvert to 1080p?? That's my burning question!!

Then you should have asked that, instead of asking if it upconverts "like the current VGA does." ;^) I don't have a 1080p set, but I'm pretty sure you can select the 1080 resolution when using the VGA adapter. Why wouldn't it be able to upconvert to 1080p? Unless there's some law against it (like there is with upconverting over component) then there's no reason for it not to.

Is there such a law?

You can upconvert with vga, hdmi, and dvi. You can't with component for dvds. For hd-dvd and blu-ray you can play 1080p content from component as long as the hdtv specs allow component to do that. I believe this may change soon by copyright laws.
