Guys,
Believe it or not, I'm a bit new to the camcorder thing. If I buy a Canon HV20 (or other HDD camcorder) and want to record in high definition on the tapes, then transfer it to DVD using my computer, what do I need to have or do to watch those tapes (assuming I already have the high-definition tv)?
A regular dvd player?
An upconverting dvd player?
A high definition dvd player?
Does it matter at what bit rate(?) I transfer to DVD?

Go buy an HD-DVD Player from Toshiba. I would suggest the XA2 or HDA2.

Step 5. Watch your HDV movies on your HD-DVD player!

I have close to 60 Movies on DVD that are in HD Glory playing on my HD-DVD player! It is amazing and you will love it!

How many minutes can you fit on each DVD-R disk?

its roughly 23min of HDV on a 4.7GB DVD-R.

You could also skip about 5 or 6 of those steps (and they will take a few hours with a very fast PC) and get a DVD based camcorder like a Sony UX7. Record your video, pull out the DVD and stick it in your PS3 or Blu Ray player. Presto, high definition. If you want to finalize the DVD to add menu's it will take about 2 minutes in the camera. Couldn't be any easier. The quality is super. :)

Question: Could the HD footage on the DVD be played in someone's PC without having an HD-DVD or BD player? I'm concerned that most of my family doesn't own an HD-DVD/BR player and thus won't have ANY way of watching the footage I record.

Question: Could the HD footage burnt to the DVD be played on the PS3 in full resolution?

You can use just MF6+, and it will do it all for you. I just used it last night, and was able to skip using MF5, and Nero 7. Easier than before ,for me, only using one program, to import and burn HDV to DVD.

Givmeabrek, give ME a break.

1. finalization is needed for guaranteed player compatibility and to ensure no other material can be accidentally recorded on the disc.

2. finalization can take up to 40 minutes (this is based on what I personally witnessed).

3. the quality may be super but ANY HDV camcorder (albeit tape based) is MORE super than any current AVCHD camcorder. You can even see the difference on a 32" 16:9 HDTV from 8 feet away.

Actually, if a disc is full of recordings, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to finalize. When the disc isn't full, it takes longer. The UX7 manual says that it can take up to several HOURS. To quote givemeabreak, "Ouch..."

For a fact the DVD does NOT play in any stand alone BluRay player. For a year since Sony released BD players and DVD based HD camcorders the myth of their compatibilty has been widely assumed among Sony fans. The truth is that just because Sony says BD's specs includes AVCHD doesn't mean AVCHD DVD can play in any standard BD player.
